Yeah, lots of companies does that and I just noticed that blizzard is doing it too. Just check the attached picture; in the banner you can read "Counter-Strike".
Not really subliminal messages to the truest definition of the word, but your right with the advertising part. It took me 1/2 second while looking at that ad before I felt the urge to go cap some CT's on de_dust.
I do not however understand why Sierra or Valve would want to advertise on Battle.net, thefore I believe it's not ment to be advertising to get you to play a specific game.
Sierra or Valve arent douing the advertising, its probally a generic WCG banner avavible from their site that blizzard put on to promote their games in the competition.

But it would be sierra or valve who would encouraged WCG to put counter-strike on the banner. In the form of money, if infact they are doing what clokr_ is suggesting.
Ive also noticed that if you click on join game, and it lags a bit, you see the background. on the right, you can see "WIN" etched into the metal
Well, it wouldn't cost them anything to Advertise on Battle.Net so why wouldn't they?
And if you stupid and don't know why it wouldn't cost them anything, Blizzard and Sierra, and they're linked companies are the ownership of a French Company. Vivendi
