I have a friend from Starcraftgamers, which is one of the biggest fan sites for starcraft news. He was asking me if I wanted to create a new section specifically for pro melee maps.

At first, I refused. Stating that this websites success and speciality is solely behind UMS map making, and if doesn't have any triggers, we don't do it. I felt that if we expanded to more areas, we'd eventually be like every other site, with 10 billion sections and the one that the people are really looking for doesn't matter.

However, now I'm starting to see if we can "try" this. I would NOT be leading this division of map making. Someone with experience in melee pro map making would, such as Shadow Paladin.

So, the real question for everyone is, do you like the idea and will you participate?

Yes, Has you told... In SEN community we accept any kind of map maker, Begginer, Average, Advanced, Über... why not melee map maker... I mean, they are map maker too, they do terrains ( cheers ) ...

I just totally agree for a section of this kind! That will bring new people... maybe new UMS interested... I just tell you Yoshi... That will make this site more Open and professional! Go for it! w00t.gif

i think 3d buildings are meant for ums. i dont think 3d buildings at good for melee for no reasons what so ever. ive never made a melee map but i could try.
me and my brother are like decent melee players. we could make a melee map.

Melee maps don't have the same quality that ums maps can have, because its just level design but no triggers (or systems or events or mood) The site really is about UMS maps, but at least a small section for melee map making
would be good.
You could make a fourm in map showcase that is about making melee maps. I think that would be good. Just dont make it a huge deal.
There are melee UMS games too. Like games with observers or games with slight variations on the normal game play. So it could be about that type of melee too.

I keep hearing about 3d building all the time, but i dunno what it's all about... confused.gif

if You do do this make sure you have two secton under melee

Money maps

and

Non money maps

I say that you should forget the idea of a melee section. We're here for the UMS scene, and a melee section could attract a very different type of crowd. But you could have a link that says "If you want to discuss melee maps, please refer to our affiliate StarCraftGamers" or something like that.

I think this is a good idea, also if you haven't noticed I made a melee map with towers and stuff, it's in the DLDB, go, go! Also, in response to the money map and non-money map idea, I don't think that's a good idea; for you see money maps are evil and the creators of them should burn in hell forever. smile.gif

I'm in favor so long as money maps are banned. I was even considering writing a strategy guide that would be specifically designed for UMS people.

I don't. The only time I'm considering this is because its technically map making too, but its not one I enjoy doing.

Starcraftgamers plays maps, doesn't really make them. There is no actually major site of making pro maps.

Pro maps are always balenced and they are non money maps. I can't ban certain styles from this website, because its unfair (one person who may love bound maps may hate RPGs, and so on). Money maps will be seperated from the pro maps.


The way I see it, we've basically already dominated the UMS side of the Starcraft community, theres no where else to go but "up".

Money maps that are specifically designed for comp stomping should be banned. They take little or no mapping skill, zero triggering skill, and a tiny bit of terrain skills to fit 8 start locations and 8 mineral patches in the smallest area possible. There is no possible arguement that someone could give to back-up this kind of a map.

Personally, I also think it is a great idea for this melee section.


And if I am to manage the section (as Mike asked me), I'm sorry, but I'll have to refuse ANY maps that are made for "quick games", such as every money maps, or those which are only terrain and not designed with originality and/or work put into it --> Doodads, strategy levels, etc...

Maps accepted would only be melee maps, not melee-like UMS maps (such as the building idea, 2x speed, etc...)


Also, I'd like to know from everyone... Should we really call them Pro Maps? Cuz if I do get to manage this, I'll have to write tutorials and make melee maps (obviously), but Yoshi doesn't seem to know much about pro maps and he thinks I can actually make them tongue.gif. Knowing these pro maps are (often) perfectly balanced and original, I don't think everyone's maps would fit in there. So; should we have different sections? One which would basicaly be about taking already-existing pro maps and put them there, and other(s) section(s) would be about general submitting from everyone around (including myself... I guess).

On another note, we might as well make up a ranking system on submitted maps... The number of downloads, reviews, different strategy possibilities, balance, esthetic, etc... Once alot of people would agree on a certain map, just put it in the "Pro" section.


Enough of this now tongue.gif. Any more ideas?
