Staredit Network -> UMS Showcase -> Orbit Defense 1.0
Report, edit, etc...Posted by BSTRhino on 2004-10-15 at 07:01:17
Well, since this is the mapping showcase, it sounds like here's where I introduce a project made by a bunch of talented map makers based at WarBoards.org called the Starchitects.

QUOTE
This is not your ordinary defense map.

In Orbit Defense, four players must defend their quadrants of a circle, but at the end of each round, control of the quadrants rotates, and you will find yourself defending against the enemy with your teammate\'s units.

Five weeks were spent balancing the building and hero defenses available to the player, and because of this, one game of Orbit Defense is full of demanding decisions and close teamwork.

Whoa there sonny. Careful with the double post.

I'll need to get on to check it out later.

So you guys finally pulled off A map? Has the world come to an end?

I kid. I'll edit to tell you how what I think later when I do. After I get over my shock first, though.

You know what? I figured it out! Starchitechs vs. (U)! A battle royal to be crowned the ruling Starcraft UMS map making group of all time!

...or maybe I should lay down and wait for sobriety to kick in before posting anything more lol.

Lol Tux, step away from the keyboard.

So Rhino, one thing I'd like to know... How many people helped work on this map, and what roles did they play in creating the finished product?

Too bad I can't check out your map, so the following statment may have no meaning, but in any case I'd just like to say this:

(U) > All tongue.gif

Personally I think Starchitechs would pwn you. They don't have the "history" that you guys do, but they're an incredible bunch of people who I believe with the right motivation and strategy could make you guys look silly.

And besides, you guys need some reason to exist, right? If it's just you, and no one else, there's no real point to it all.

I think we should have a map contest, with three prizes and idol should give the prizes out to the winners and be a judge, and the hand in date be sometime in the future, maybe under three months time?

Interesting Discussion, could (U) even put a team together to make a map?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by BSTRhino on 2004-10-15 at 19:37:46
Well, it took a long time for me to learn the leadership skills to run the Starchitects, I had to have a lot of past experience and mistakes about it, but now I've come to the point where I believe we can do any project, as long as I'm there to get everyone going in the same direction. I was actually thinking I should start a website on team management since I'm so interested in it now.

We could take on (U), but (U) would probably win, I only come online to IM once a week, and that's when all the major work happens. It's good that way though, since it is not stressful and it doesn't squeeze the enthusiasm out of the project.

I like the idea of borrowing a few members from (U) to run a project, but like I said before, I've lead map making groups and watched others that don't have the right leadership and don't manage to get stuff done. So, judging by what people are saying, it sounds like it'd be better if I were allowed to lead the project, I don't mean to sound arrogant or anything, it's just to make sure the project gets finished.

Anyway, credits for the map:

BSTRhino - upgrade triggers, doing the bulk of the terrain, and unit balancing
Dark_Soul74 - original idea for the map, as well as other ideas in between.
Doom Dragoon - mind control selector triggers
StealthyDeath - a lot of triggers and fixing the terrain that I didn't get perfect enough
UED77 - a whole lot of triggers, he also sparked me to get a project discussion going which lead to this project
Whiteknight - he developed the concepts for the movement triggers and added the little attachments where the enemies appear

Finally, we had a whole lot of people beta testing. Spdstr, SikawticPaladin, ZeroDarkStar, Haplo, Maegtelluma, and a whole lot more people that I've missed.

It was heaps of fun. We've also got a new minigame project that could be finished soon, depending on when we think it's filled with enough minigames, so keep your eye out for that.

I'll see ya

Seeing as I can't play it...someone wanna give a description of the map?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by PsykoticNin on 2004-10-17 at 01:04:02
soo tahts why it seemed so familiar, ive played a map by ssw thats the same concept
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Tuxedo Templar on 2004-10-19 at 23:18:52
Finally got to play it. A very solid D map for sure. Just needs "sex appeal" and this would be a guaranteed hit!

Translation: Aesthetics, "cool" features (sound blips for cash, a "woosh" for switching to diff side, etc.), terrain labels (this map has a LOT of empty space), and even some ego would make this kikkass I tell you!
Report, edit, etc...Posted by BSTRhino on 2004-10-22 at 01:29:01
I see! Those are great tips that I had never thought of. It's that little bit extra between extraordinary and ordinary. I'll have to remember that for our next projects. Thank you!

I'm seeing this map pop up in a lot of public games on US East. Great job, its spreading fast!

Funny how many BlizzSCUMS people are "Starchitects"...

Well, hats off for a map that was finished with a TEAM effort. Hey if it is as fun as it sounds, more props to ya.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by BSTRhino on 2004-10-22 at 08:15:10
Really DevliN? My heart kinda jumped there because I was so happy. I really want to go to USEast now and have a look.

Hi Revelade! Nice to see you again!

Yeah, the Starchitects is pretty much made up of the best of BlizzSCUMS, just this time I'm so much more experienced with leadership. I cannot tell you in words how much I've learnt about completing team projects now. I honestly want to go and get a job out there and make myself a project team manager because I've been having so much fun with it. I know I keep on saying that... but I'm just so passionate about the Starchitects right now, I had been waiting for over a year to finally be confident that I could lead a team to finish project after project.

Softwarewolf made a map called 'circulation defence' and it was just like this... I wonder...
Well has this map taken off on battle.net yet or is it a flop?

I just got Orbit Defense 1.0, and it seems to be quite well balanced and fun to play. Anyone who hasn't played it yet should!
Report, edit, etc...Posted by .Coko[CK] on 2004-10-24 at 17:36:27
In two hours of browsing USEast, it appeared seven times, which is good for this type of map, too many Defence mean spread out population of players. Continue the good work, maybe move into areas i prefer eh!
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Paella on 2004-10-24 at 17:42:24
I have not played it yet because for some reason I cannot find it... the link won't work with me. could someone please post the map? Or does someone even want to play it right now? clan uUu @east...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by BSTRhino on 2004-10-24 at 20:02:43
Thank you everyone, it means a lot to us to see people enjoying our work. Seven times in two hours! I'm going to go tell the other guys...

Yeah, Paella, StarCraft.org hasn't got the most reliable hosting, so the download might not be working during peak hours of the day. And some people have reported it to just plain not load.

I'll attach it to the first post for you guys to download it more easily.
