Hey, as you can see I am not on Microsoft.. anything any more, I gotta say Linux is WAY better if you aquire it to conform to your needs., I wanna spread the joy of a non-crashing, stable and advanced OS.

A word on Windows and it's blanket people won't leave.

Come on people, Linux wont kill you, atleast try it, you say you have alot of stuff on Windows that you need? Well Linux has that stuff too! And if not, atleast use a Live CD to go back to Windows when you need it, please just try it.

Stuff that makes Linux cool

It's very programmer friendly, it's very newbie friendly.

C++, Perl, PHP and etc come preinstalled on Linux, go and use the advanced editor it comes with, greatness.

Servers are what Linux was built for, hosting somthing? Get Linux silly!

Games and FUN Linux comes with alot of neat games and cool drawing programs, like Gimp and EDitor, they are like Photoshop!

Right now I am using RedHat, in paticular I am using this.

I suggest if your a newbie you use a Linux Live CD, it's very easy and runs completely off your CD-Rom, it doesn't affect your HD at all.

How to use a Live CD or boot a new Hard Drive:

Things you will need

1. An image burner (.iso not jpg), I suggest Burn at Once

2. A blank CD

3. DSL or Cable

What to do

1. Pick your favorite flavor, if using multiple CDs do step 2 only burn how ever CDs you need in the correct order and follow the steps.

2. Download the .iso image, insert a blank CD and burn at once will automatically take the file and tell you it's ready to burn, let it do it's work.

3. Insert the live CD or the 1st CD you just burned .iso image[s] to.

4. Restart your computer, press F1, goto "boot" and set the order to CD-Rom 1, then exit and your Linux choice will come up.

5. Let it do it's thing, it walks you through.

*6. If using a Live CD then remember you can turn the computer off, set the boot to Hard Drive and go back to your Windows, and use Linux at anytime you want.

There you have it, any questions you may have just ask me here.

Have fun guys.

Misc

Wanna use Unix, for free?
I only suggest this for advanced users, Unix is hard but very stable and great.
Try this

Also don't forget emulation - run windows apps on Linux!

I wouldnt really consider Linux more advanced. From what i've seen, it seems more primitive. That's why it doesnt crash as much as windows would, mainly because linux has less background stuff working and the toolbars are a lot less advanced. But I could be wrong. I think i'll stick with Windows though, good enough for me.

No Linux is not less primitive, it has many development and geared-towards-networkers / programmers tools, you just haven't used it, like most people they won't try Linux cause this scares them, Windows is a pillow for you, well Linux SuSe and Mandrake is just as easy to use, and even better.
So don't bash Linux untill you try it you baby.

How does Linux scare people? :/
I might try it as a second OS.

Isolated you're not really helping out here, Linux is a great alternitive and StarCraft will run on Linux, SCIndex has a turtorial on how to do it.

God damn I knew you people would bash Linux to no end, I post this stuff at more respected technical boards and it's well appreciated.

You can atleast use a Live CD.

As for the contest, I don't know if I'll continue, Yoshi was a big help behind it and I don't know if you would be too. %50 chance it will continue.

Oooo that kinda hurts ;/ I can do whatever you need. I have one suggestion though, split up the $250 to be 1st place - 175 2nd place - 75

I've used linux heavily in school... I've used it at home... I just don't see what's the big deal about it that I should convert my computer lifestyle to use linux

What you say, "Live CD"... is that some sort of dual boot loader? You could talk about dual booting.

Edit: ah... i see what live cd is now... nevermind...
I need to go to work so I can't finish this conversation ;/ laterz

Hey no, Live CD isn't dual booting, it's literally using Linux, but off the CD drive, meaning your not putting anything on your Hard Drive, dual booting is putting Linux AND Windows on your HD.

Live CD consists of putting the CD in, changing the boot to CD-Rom (which is easy) then using Linux, when you need to go back to Windows, just restart the comp and put the boot back to HardDrive (easy), no string attached.

I highly recommend Live CD.

As for the MM contest, I need you to post news about it/help test maps and just be behind it 100% like Yoshi did.

I always thought that linux was for hackers, and I didnt want to get into that just yet, also I didnt know that it was free. With my newfound knowledge, thanks to Idol, I think I might actually go out on a limb and try it, I can change it back easily and fast right?

ADDITION: Which one do I press, it has about 1000 programs there, which one is the noob Linux Live CD thing??? Im confused...

Your welcome, I'm glad someone thanks me instead of bashing me.

Yeah it's real easy to put on and off, like I said when you want to go back you just restart your comp, press F1 and goto "boot" then change it back to Hard Drive 1, very easy.

Good luck.

Edit: try this, very Windows like while still being Linux, newb friendly.

Just installed mandrake a few days ago.., fought with X11 config setting up duel monitors etc.. I was stuck in console for a day or two.

Previously used Apache win32 for my webserver, but now I can use apache on its native os... so I'm happy and it's happy.. and I know its happy cause its running fast.

Still getting use to restrictions of running without root access all the time,.. moving files around in konsole is a biitch .. but I think I can manage.

I plan to eventually develop hardware devices so thats why I'm learning.. Cause the way I see it.. if installing drivers for hardware is a pain with windows, thats the last place I would want to be developing.

I wasn't bashing you on the fact you like linux or how you stand behind linux, it's more the statements you made against Windows.
I personally am not pro-this or pro-that, however, it annoys me when people try to convince others to change their computers because it'll be "more stable" or "more secure" and so forth and so forth. Such statements usually backed with personal opinions based on biased "facts". Like... "omg!1111 get firefox!!11 it's faster and more secure"... no it isn't.

Syndicate, I would have imagined that you would have picked a more l337 version of linux, rather than mandrake. Although it's been awhile since I read articles about different linux versions, I remember people telling me slackware is the way to go for non-noobs. Hmmm... if there is still a slackware anyways.

Back when I was like... 13... or so, me and my friend tried installing linux on my computer. I had the harddrive set up in partitions and I was just going to have a dual os system with dual booting... although I wasn't a stupid noob at the time, I somehow managed to get my whole harddrive wiped out... which, at the time, was probably like 20 gigs of worthwhile stuff. I wish Live CD was around back then.

Heh, gj there Isolated.

Actually Mandrake isn't all that bad, I don't like it, it's too Windows like and uh.. hacking/networking/programming in Perl in Windows is like dancing in a cast, hence RedHat. wink.gif

Anywho, I gotta KINDA bash Windows you know, Linux needs all the offence it can get!

Whoa, way confusing (not really) how do I set the date/time to AM PM instead of Military time?
How do I change Icons for my programs like firefox, iE, sc, And my games and stuff, is there a way to make it so that all my stuff off windows is easily accesible, can I change back quickly without the long wait, why do I have so many questions?

Also, why is the text so small?

What are you using? Are you on Linux?

Well if you're on a Live CD you can't take the CD out and put in something else, it runs off the CD, if you have to just turn off the computer and set the boot to hardrive and you're back to Windows.

Ya, restart comp, press F1 before the Linux starts and set your HardDrive to boot 1st then restarts.

Unless you didn't use a Live CD and installed it to you're HardDrice, in that case get your Windows boot disc and put that in.

Im not like the supper expert or anything but I have been using firefox every since i reinstalled windows at the start of the school year. I havn't had a single popup ither not one, on top of that my external popup filter, the one i used with IE, doesn't even do anything cause nothing gets though firefox's built in popup blocker (or maybe its because it only works with IE lol) . Most spyware targets Internet Explorer so using it opens the door to spyware and thats the main reason i use it since spyware destoryed my system once already and i don't want it to happen again.
