When I first had the idea of Stratærena, I wanted to make it like Moose's Uberëna. Then I realized that many people don't have the patience to build their units, and it did not seem feasible combined with some other factors as well. Therefore, I'm using the same old Beacon-selection method from Team Micro Arena, with mostly the same unit choices. The following is a list of the selectable units at each level. I'm open to suggestions, since my personal idea of "Balance" may not be what works the best.

****Level 1****
  • 5 Marines
  • 3 Marines, 2 Medics
  • 3 Vultures
  • 1 Ghost, 1 Medic
  • 3 Firebats
  • 1 Siege Tank, 1 Dropship
  • 2 Wraiths
  • 2 Goliaths
  • 2 Mutalisks
  • 4 Hydralisks
  • 6 Zerglings
  • 2 Zealots
  • 1 Reaver
  • 2 High Templars
  • 1 Scout
  • 2 Dragoons
****Level 2****
  • 6 Firebats, 2 Medics
  • 2 Siege Tanks, 2 SCVs
  • 4 Wraiths
  • 4 Vultures
  • 6 Goliaths
  • 6 Marines, 2 Ghosts, 2 Medics
  • 10 Zerglings
  • 4 Mutalisks
  • 2 Lurkers
  • 8 Hydralisks
  • 2 Dark Templars
  • 1 Reaver, 1 Shuttle
  • 6 Dragoons
  • 4 High Templars
  • 2 Observers, 4 Zealots
  • 4 Scouts
****Level 3****
  • 2 Battlecruisers, 2 SCVs
  • 12 Marines, 6 Firebats, 2 Ghosts, 4 Medics
  • 8 Goliaths, 4 Vultures, 1 SCV
  • 12 Zerglings, 12 Hydralisks
  • 2 Infested Terrans, 4 Scourges
  • 4 Guardians, 2 Devourers
  • 10 Dragoons, 4 Zealots
  • 4 High Templars, 2 Dark Templars, 2 Observers
  • 6 Corsairs
  • 2 Carriers
****Heroes****
  • Infested Kerrigan
  • Danimoth
  • Zeratul
  • Matriach
  • Tom Kazansky
  • 3 Ultralisks
  • Magellan
  • Norad II
  • Normal Kerrigan
  • -=Subtract Enemy Score=-
  • -=Increase Countdown Timer=-
All units will have original Starcraft stats, with all Upgrades researched.

The last two Hero options will be explained later.

sounds awsome but you might wanna change a few of the stats because a ghost isnt going to live long and some heros will have stacked health. awsome unit group selection though cant wait to play it

remove that goddamn symbol from the map name mad.gif ranting.gif

Right... I'll do what TMA Gold (and later versions) had, doubling all of the Ghost's stats. However, I'm probably NOT going to do the same "0-Energy Cloak" because it could get taken advantage of. Also, Lockdown will be reduced to 50 energy.

Forgot to mention that Unclean One is also a Hero choice.

Now, to explain Stratærena in detail:

There are many different Arenas to play on. They will be rotated through, in order, since voting on a map to play every single time would be too much hassle.

The following options are able to be voted on by all the players at the very beginning of the game and will last for the entire game. Some options will affect which Arenas will be rotated through.

-=Teams=-
Team members are predetermined by the Forces, before the game starts.
  • Free for All
  • 4 Teams of 2
  • 2 Teams of 4
  • 2 Teams of 4; winning team then goes into FFA
-=Victory Conditions=-
  • Traditional, each team has a Nexus; if all Enemy Nexi are destroyed, win
  • Points, no Nexi; at the end of the Round, whomever has the most Kills/Razings points win
  • Random, chosing one of the two above randomly, as well as the number of Rounds and, if applicable, Time
  • None, no Victory unless if opposing team players all quit the game; will cycle through all available maps infinitely; the Rounds option will be skipped
-=Rounds=-
Each round will choose one of 12 maps randomly. The maps differ in size from (3) Tiny (32x32), (2) Small (32x64), (3) Medium (64x64), (3) Large (96x96), and (1) Huge (128x128). The Tiny maps are used only for Teams of 2 or Free for All.
  • 3
  • 6
  • 9
  • 12 (Only available for Teams of 2 or FFA)
-=Time=-
Using Countdown Timer
  • 5 minutes
  • 10 minutes
  • 30 minutes
  • Unlimited (Only for Traditional)
Another feature in Stratærena that I've already got a start on is Neutral Buildings. There are two different types of Neutral Buildings, Pylon/Shield Batter and Bunker. Take control of these Buildings by simpler going next to them. If an enemy already owns the Building, you can still get it if all enemy units next to the Building are killed. Of course, this will mean that loaded Bunkers would be impossible to take. However, if this option gets too hasslesome (e.g. having to rebuild the Buildings in the None Victory Condition, since the maps will be replayed), I could just not do it.

Suggestions/Comments? I might make a trailer, or just keep working on the map itself until everything's finished.

ADD: Lisk, first of all, watch your language. And why the censored.gif do you have the "ranting" smilie? tongue.gif FYI, take "Strategy" and "arena", take off the "gy" from the end of "Strategy", and overlap the "e" at the end of "Strate" and "a" at the beginning of "arena". What do you get? Stratærena!

Updated:

****Heroes****
  • Infested Kerrigan
  • Danimoth
  • Zeratul
  • Matriach
  • Infested Duran, instead of Tom Kazansky
  • Magellan
  • Norad II
  • Normal Kerrigan
  • Unclean One
  • -=Recharge Nexus HP & Shield=-, instead of 3 Ultralisks
  • -=Subtract Enemy Score=-
  • -=Increase Countdown Timer=-
In addition, Free For All can use only the Points Victory Condition.

Does anyone have any comments or questions on the Voting options? I feel like I'm putting too many limits on it...

dry.gif Still working on Terrain, down to the last Large Arena and the Huge Arena. After that, it'll be triggerwork for the rest of the map!
Report, edit, etc...Posted by SA_Max71 on 2004-11-07 at 13:08:04
I tried to play team micro arena at least 5 times, and then I gave up because it was too complicated for me sad.gif .... Although It would explain why I rarely see it on battle.net.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by PCFredZ on 2004-11-07 at 18:01:42
eek.gif The original TMA was too confusing for you?! dry.gif

Ok, I'm not going to start a poll, so let me just ask verbally:

Should I:

A) Start triggers with the Arenas done right now (All except the last one, Huge) and publish an Alpha version
B) Finish all Arenas first, then do triggers for a more complete Alpha version
C) Using the Arenas I have right now, create a trailer
D) Finish all Arenas first, then create a trailer

I hope all of you who are reading this post had read that one too.

TMA is seen ALL THE TIME on Battle.net. I don't know what Max is talking about. Moron. Also, this seems like a dumb idea. Moose takes TMA and makes Überena. Then you take Überena and make... TMA again? They already have TMA.

SaLaCiouS, did your read my first two posts?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by KaboomHahahein on 2004-11-07 at 18:12:34
Never bothered to read all the post. Maybe somebody already said this but the 3 marins and 2 medics would be too good. Because medics own. I think it should be either 3 rines 1 med or 4 rines 1 medic.

[attachmentid=2815]

Terrain all finished. Unfortunately, none of the neutral buildings (e.g. Bunkers and Shield Battery/Pylon groups) showed up, and the Doodads are only stumps.

Now starting on triggers.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by SaLaCiouS(U) on 2004-11-10 at 17:47:12
Yes, I read them completely. I fail to see your point. Moose advanced Team Micro Arena into Uberena, then you backwords engineered Uberena back into Tea, Micro Arena and you think you've come up with something new. You haven't. However... if you can make a good Team Micro Arena map that's well balanced that's just as good. The main problem with Gold is that everyone always gets Kerrigan and there is no way to kill her because you can't see her and fight at the same time, and none of the units have any special abilities. The problem with 7.77 is ... well there is no problem. 7.77 is perfect.

Fix the Doodads by using SCMDraft 2. It automatically fixes them.

Sounds good, I've always loved Team Micro Arena, but I failed to see a map that was actually half decent to play in.

dry.gif How discouraging...
I just want Stratærena to have the strategy part of Starcraft, not just massing Zerglings, counter with Firebats, counter Firebats with Hydralisks, Hydras with Reavers, and so on. disgust.gif Is the idea really bad?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by xFRx on 2004-11-10 at 21:35:13
cool... i want to try that one time
Report, edit, etc...Posted by PsykoticNin on 2004-11-11 at 00:18:22
dont let the haters discourage ya, this looks like a good idea. hope u make it better than tma. what i see so far, the terrain looks awesome biggrin.gif just make sure u give it good triggers and make the gameplay look good. if this is "strat"arena then base it on strats not just micro.. ohh i dunno, just keep workin at it! good luck
Report, edit, etc...Posted by SaLaCiouS(U) on 2004-11-11 at 11:58:46
I hate it because it IS Team Micro Arena. There are dozens of these maps. You can't make it any better. And you don't even KNOW what strategy is. Strategy IS countering.. what more strategy could you be looking for? Spells in there too? It's called Team Micro Arena 7.77, it has everything.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by PCFredZ on 2004-11-11 at 13:15:58
Sheesh, Salacious, I've played 7.77, and our opinions of it seem to be QUITE different, though you can certainly keep yours.

The entire Team Micro Arena series is missing one crucial part of Starcraft strategy, which is terrain. TMA is for the masses; Stratærena would be better suited for people who also play Melee Starcraft.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by .Coko[CK] on 2004-11-11 at 14:20:06
I'd like to see you balance all units, for all terrain styles.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by SaLaCiouS(U) on 2004-11-11 at 14:21:59
So basically the terrain will be as sophisticated as melee, making it completely UN-FUN to play. So it will be a strategy map like melee, with terrain like melee... now you're too close to melee for comfort. How about an original idea instead of taking good ones and censored.gif tifying them.

[CK Edit: How about deciding that your own opinion is sometimes the worse way to aid someone?]
[SaLa Edit: Don't edit my posts. Go censored.gif yourself.]
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Ultimo on 2004-11-11 at 14:55:40
Completely unfun for people who don't play melee.
It will help you develop stratgey I suppose.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Deathknight on 2004-11-11 at 15:19:13
The thing is, with the "person who has more kills", they get a hero. Well something like that. That is imbalanced. Make it balanced. Example: A hero should be given to the ones losing to give the better player more of a challenge. It isn't fun if all you do is keep attacking, get a bunch of heroes, and be able to attack constantly without loss or strategy. Also, the infested terran is just retarded. I don't see why you even put it in if all you do is bring about 5 of them across to the enemy to win. You call that strategy? Hah.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Ultimo on 2004-11-11 at 15:28:31
Trust me, it's much more complicated then that.
The overmind has so much hp that... you can't even see it's hp.
Zerglings rape it o.O
When me and moose were playing, I eaisly caught up to him when he was 10,000 ahead of me.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by PCFredZ on 2004-11-11 at 15:51:31
-.-; Salacious... Ouch. I never had anything against you, did I?

DK, I understand what you mean, but I took a different approach by simply resetting everything when the Arena changes. That way someone who was behind has a chance to catch up again. But yes, I will still consider giving them "N00b Aid". About the Infested Terrans: they have normal health, and I'm probably going to decrease it anyway.

Anyone going to comment on the Neutral Buildings idea? I.e. take control of empty Bunkers or unoccupied Shield Batteries.
