you can start with bounds. They are good for your to be familiar with hyper triggers, timing, wait blocks and some commonly used actions.

Well. how I started was that I opened a map that I liked and studied the triggers. Then try to modify it for personnaly uses ( don't play on b-net) then later when you are ready make simple maps. Bounds. madness etc. Then soon you will leanr all the triggers and make more complex maps. Come here if you have problems!

First of all start modifying unprotected maps and test the effects.
Then Start making Special Forces maps.
Bounds.
Defenses.
Arenas.
Then the famous RPG's.

What kind of defense game do u suggest i make i have tried a spiral def but i gave that up and decided to try something a bit easier(couldn't figure out how to make the life blowup if a monster got to the middle)

You might want to look in the Tutorials for some trigger systems. it can be found at the top navigation bar.

Trigger
Description:
Life Subtraction
Players:
¤ All Players
Conditions:
¤ Player X Controls at least one unit at "Middle"
Actions:
¤ Remove one X Unit at "Middle"
¤ Remove one "Life Unit" at Anywhere
¤ Preserve trigger

It's quite simple when a monster got to the middle, you just remove one monster and one life in the same trigger. Then use Preserve trigger to make it happen multiple Times.

The way to begin mapmaking is to experiment with Starcraft Campaign Editor (the one that comes with Starcraft).
Play around, make some defend the temple games, make some kill the enemy games. Make some protect this building games. Make some alliance games. Then get the mapmaking package for average mapmakers and experiment with stacking and vision. Make a defense/bound game. Perhaps a survival game. Then when you are finally a decent mapmaker, read the tutorials and tips and tricks. Learn hyper trigger theory and read about the new concepts that come up. Finally make some RPG's or other fun maps and experiment with square tiles.

a bound is where you must avoid objects and get to the other side.
For starters... Don't make a bound there just too hard...
Try making a rpg there simple and easy...
Or try making a sniper map....

Actually, I learned off of MASSERS...
You learn a LOT of the basics when creating massers.
Bring unit to location, respawn at other locations, heroes, timing, etc...
Not to mention it's very simplistic.

Good luck!

I say Start with Bound//melee

then start making Defense

then make basic RPG's

Then combine different kinds like a RPG with a bound type feel just the more you make the more you learn

When I first started making maps, I started by changing maps others had made! ie ->Maze def, by changeing the units in a round then looking at how all the triggers fixed togeter to make the game work.
Then changing the map layout! and the way the uits move about!( i never opened these maps to b.net as they were not mine to do that with.

Hope this helps.

Try making a few bounds and then defense.
If you're ready, prepare to make an RPG, which makes mapmaking fun.

I always made my own maps, I never edited another map, but I did look at them. However, playing around with other peoples maps is a good idea, just don't play it on B.net or the creator will be upset. Also, look at each of the triggers a few times in the first weekk when making your first map. Then, you'll start to rememebr some of the possible trigger actions and conditions which will let you learn faster.
