Staredit Network -> UMS Assistance -> Couple Questions on Limitations
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Coop on 2004-11-15 at 16:53:39
Hi, I'm currently making a big 256x256 RPG which is going to use a ton of location points and triggers. I'm just wondering what the max limit of location points and triggers you can have. I've reached the trigger limit before and it gave me the option to ignore it, so I did and nothing happened. I noticed in StarForge that you can change the max limits on some things like triggers, does this work? Also, how many units and doodads can you place? Should I worry about limiting the number of locations and triggers I'm using?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks Coko.
Wow, these forums move very quickly!
Alot of RPG's must have problems with that 256 location limit. I might in the future, I already have about 80 and id say I'm less then 20% done. I'm positive I hit the trigger limit, a popup came up and said something like you cannot make anymore triggers (can't remember too well happened about a year ago) and it gave me the option to ignore.

Edit: Thanks NeoNightmare. You posted while I was posting this.

i doubt it, you've probably hit the limit of actions in a trigger, that's only 64 actions, that might have been what came up, its like way bigger than most of those limitations i believe, though i have never reached it

SCXE don't remember what version. I was making a Connect Four map which required alot of triggers for finding all lines of 4 and placing pieces etc. Coko said the trigger limit was so high and I don't remember it being really really high.

Edit: Well I know it wasn't the action limit cause thats just in one specific trigger.

The trigger limit is only 500 triggers.

first of all, i doubt it is that low, thats the trigger ACTION limit, and i have already stated that, don't just read the last post, read all of the posts or at least state that you didn't read all of the posts closedeyes.gif

500 Triggers isn't that much..I guess I should be starting to limit my use of them.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by .Coko[CK] on 2004-11-15 at 18:14:36
Incorrect yet again, it isn't 500, because i've regulary gone above that with ease, its around 60000 or so.

I was dragged out and it has been proved, there are actualy 255 locations counting anywhere.

THERE IS NO TRIGGER LIMIT
Triggers can be limited by the things they use, such as strings or switches. Also, there is a problem that when you get too much space, your map grows. But there is no max number of triggers.

Whoops, oh yeah, i forgot they did something wierd, its goes up to 254 doesn't it. That means 255 overall. There is a max, but thats because the maximum Starcraft can handle means it just gets overrun with commands.

Yes, to clarify there is no official max i.e. you can hit copy as many times as you want on an uncommented trigger with no switches or strings, but it will eventually screw up the game engine.

Likely you could use simple maths and computer knowledge, mixed with an understanding of the data transfer and system used by Starcraft on the operating system to work out the exact amount possible.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by DT_Battlekruser on 2004-11-15 at 18:22:47
It would probablly differ on the size RAM you have, because the triggers will probabally get stored as RAM in the game engine. Computer-specific, something will eventually make it crash.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by .Coko[CK] on 2004-11-15 at 18:24:05
I doubt you'd overload your RAM, unless it very low, because of how the 80x84 system works with Starcraft, more likely the functions and links would collapse and you'd wish the game was crashed.

Pulling the plug will always solve that problem. Unless you're on a laptop. What I hate about them is if they freeze so bad that the "on/off" switch doesn't work, then you have to let battery run out :/
Report, edit, etc...Posted by .Coko[CK] on 2004-11-15 at 18:26:26
Actually you just make sure your power dependant before seeing if you can overload starcraft. And pulling the plug isn't the best plan in any case.

True, but a computer with no power can't keep running, even if by some nutty impossible case your CPU melts.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Coop on 2004-11-15 at 18:29:09
I wonder why i got that popup thing telling me i couldnt make any more triggers...weird, but i don't remember exactly what it said.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Zero on 2004-11-15 at 18:29:16
I have proof that it goes only to 500:
Report, edit, etc...Posted by .Coko[CK] on 2004-11-15 at 18:29:56
Actually it can have a power supply independant directly placed, as most have which will almost never run out. How you think it knows the time or its commands?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by DT_Battlekruser on 2004-11-15 at 18:30:23
That's the string limit dorkface, not the trigger limit. Funny it is 500 in the normal editor, but 1028 in real life.
