Staredit Network -> UMS Assistance -> 2 questions...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by cfro7211 on 2004-11-20 at 14:28:32
my first question is relatively simple, at least for adv. mappers, but i'm not totally positive i'm sure what a 'death counter' is. in a nut shelll is it something like this?:

current player has suffered 1 death of independent starport
----
actions
or am i wrong?

secondly, i have a question about something found in the tutorials: making units fire across the maps:
http://www.staredit.net/index.php?act=tuto...%20Entire%20Map

Deathknight says that u change the unit ID to the number 2008, and give them shared vision across the map, so that they can fire at each other. now, i altered the unit id in sf to 2008, but sc crashed. i wanted to have bc's firing across the map at each other, but its not working. any ideas?

All a death counter is, Is that it counts how many deaths you have suffered.

Death counters are used for many things. Say if there are three different options, you would use a death counter for that. Most people would use switches while others prefer using death counters. Death counters are usually used when Hyper Triggers are in play.

2008 may crash for one of the following reasons:

A. You used a mac.
B. You clicked on 2008.
C. Dunno what else...

well, i'm still a bit confused. i didnt click on it, and i have a pc. when i started the game instead of a bc, i got a zergling, and before i could click on it, sc crashed sad.gif

still a bit lost, but i'll keep working on it

question: should the unit i want to fire have the 2008 under the Unit Type box? or any unit?

You can fire at unit 2008 from a maximun of 72 tiles away for the following reason.

Although when you see it it looks like it's just a zergling the unit is actually 72 tiles wide and it's stackable with every other unit.
The units attacking it look like their range is 10x more but it just takes a long way to get to the center of the unit.

Death Counters can be used as waits or switches. They just add to the deaths that a certain type of unit for that player has taken.
A Death Counter can be used as a wait because SC takes a minimal amount of time to add a Death Counter(12 per second), and it doesn't haev the drawbacks of waits.
Using a Death Counter as a switch is quite simple. Put it as a condition and you got yourself a switch with no strings attached.

ok, i got it too work, but, it doesnt look like it had the affect i wanted. i had wanted bc's with the ability to fire on other units across the map, but, doesnt look like thats gunna happen. and i cant get the bcs to fire manually on the 2008 unit. when i orginally red the tutorial, i had thought that placing an unit with 2008 ID would cause it to fire across the map, but, alas, i was wrong. so it looks like my original map concept wont work. thanks for the help.

If it's a computer player, give it vision of the 2008 unit, have them horizontal from it, and make them run ai script random suicide missions. They will attack the 2008 unit if they closest enemy 2008 unit is across the map. If you are trying to make them fire both ways, you have to have 2 different players.

Couldn't you have just one computer?
Make the 2008 unit P9?

That works unless you want them attacking both ways. if you want them attacking both ways you need the 2008 unit on both sides, as you do attacking units. They will just attack the 2008 units closest to them and those would be the ones next to them, not across the map. You'd need 2 computer players attacking each otehr from opposite ends of the 72 range spectrum.

What if they cant see the one next to them?
