Near the fall of the western half of the Roman Empire (the other side of the Byzantine) German Barbarians migrated. The Romans welcomed them and set them up as a "buffer" zone. Among the were the Franks (France) Anglos and Saxons (angloland=> england) the Gothics, and some others. While they were in the Roman empire each of their languages (respectively) morphed with the latin that was already there, creating what is now known as the romance languages.
Or did I get that wrong?
