*sigh* This has happened to me.

Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs, and then find the CD drive one, that's how I did it. If not, keep messing around in control panel until you find something that says the CD drive is uninstalled or something.

I went through all of that Add/Romve program things and i still couldn't find it. I think it has something to do with the internal system hardware but I don't know.

ADDITION: I got this message trying to manually install it with Add Hardware.
QUOTE
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

ADDITION: I think I'm censored.gif ed. I uninstalled the drives fromt he system, installed them manually and they still corrupted. As a last resort I'll try and phsysicaly remove them from the PC and see if it doeas something. If it don't work it's time for Comp USA again with this old PC. My new PC still intact.

Anyone got any other suggestions before I start taking this thing aparts.

For those who don't know, hardware is a cd rom, hard drive, sound card, monitor card, motherboard, ect... Software is something like Windows XP, 98, starcraft, ect...

ooo, what fun. Don't you just love windows 95/98? [/sarcasm] (I am assuming you are using windows 95/98.) Anyways, I recommend you check your BIOS to see if it will recognize you do have a cd rom. If your BIOS doesn't recognize it, than that is where you problem most likely lies. If you BIOS does recognize it, I recommend you check to see if you have one or more devices are having a hardware conflict. In the past, this has stopped my computer from recognizing hardware. If that doesn’t work, I recommend you find every file your cd rom driver uses on your computer’s hard drive, back up each file, delete the original cd rom files, and then reinstall the cd rom drivers. If THAT doesn't work, try checking the cables that run from you cd rom to your mother board. (Speaking of motherboards, the motherboard is what your hard drive, floppy drive, sound card, ect, plugs into.) Make sure they are plugged in all the way. Sometimes they become loose, and a result, your computer doesn't know the piece of hardware is there.

I hope this helps and makes sense to you.

EDIT: Your computer *might* have a virus on it. I have had a virus which total censored.gif my system up.

do you have 2 cd rom drives?
are you sure they're pluged in? into the right ports?

are you sure that one is set on master and the other on slave?

lol... cd roms suck anyways, I don't even have one... I use virtual cd roms

When your computer starts up, it should say something like:
Master IDE-1: Harddisk blah blah blah
Slave IDE-1: None...
Master IDE-2: Cd-rom blah blah blah
Slave IDE-2: Cd-rom blah blah blah

If it doesn't say any cd-roms, go into bios > basic setup and check if cd rom is listed on their proper posititions. If anything, have bios do an autodetect on each startup.

If bios does see your cdroms, windows should. Usually they are plug n play.

In my experiance, windows won't detect a cd rom unless the computer's BIOS reconizes it first. Also, I have yet to find a cd rom that is plug and play (except for the ones that plug into USB ports.)

It says I have both Cd-Roms conected when I start the start-up boot thing.

Where can I find this BIOS program and how do I work in it?

Usually, you need to press f1, "esc", or the "Del" key on your keyboard to get into bios as soon as your computer starts to boot up (before windows loads). I am assuming your computer is less than 8 years old.

"Del" more likely than not. If bios is seeing them, you shouldn't have to worry about it then.

I didn't say otherwise (bios -> windows), but... every cd-rom I've encountered was plug n play... I didn't need any software for it and windows didn't need to detect it... but I'm on winXP I guess so maybe it just suxx0rz for you.

Beer: Contol Panel > System Properties > Hardware > Device Manager, uninstall cdrom drivers and then just restart afterwards and see if windows does it's thang.
(you might have to follow a different path)

What OS are you on anyways?

I'm on Win XP.

I tried what you said IP and it didn't work.
I also tried updating it and rolling it back to the last known good configuration(the drivers not the OS) and it still doesn't work.

Get all the new driver installer files for each drive from the manufacturers website or the CD(s).

Go to: Control Panel > Administrator Tools > Computer Management > Device Manager.

Click the PLUS symbol to maximize the "DVD/CD-ROM DRIVE"

From here is where you use your imagination. Mainly depending on the problem with your computer.

You can do a clean reinstall.

Right Click > Uninstall (Recomended you remove it then add it INSTEAD of "Updating Driver)

Right Click > Install new drivers
