Hmm, I was wondering, does anybody have any good large (8 players) Melee maps? You know, ones that are balanced but aren't symmetrical?
The reason for this is that symetrical maps makes it easy to find your opponent, while "random" maps makes things more interesting. I'm trying to find good maps to play with, but eventually, we end up on maps like Killing Grounds. Not that it's a bad map, but it gets kinda boring.
I know what you mean. I've been trying for a while to come up with something like that, pushing my meager skills to their limits... The best I've done is a fairly balanced 4-player map. I haven't even bothered with 8 yet...
All the 8 Player Melee games I joined I basically died

When I went against one player, he made an offensive right back, with 3 other players. I'm sure Shadow Paladin can tell you all about my amazing luck

Stick with head to head or melee. Your ass will get kicked less

I don't know how anyone could stand playing an 8 player game.
Heh, I'm going to tell you a story of a game I played on Killing Fields a few months back (since this is kinda off topic, I hope I don't get into too much trouble). So me and a bunch of Oi guys all go online for a SC game. Well, actually, I was already on B.Net for a few hours, and they all just came on at the same time. Apparently, they were on AIM and decided to go on SC for a game.
Now the map was Killing Fields, but it was the first time I played it. I played it a few more time after though, as stated above. Anyways, it was a free for all, and I wanted not to win, but to last the game. So the game starts, and I go for a build that basically equates to mass cannons. So after about 5 minutes, one guy drops. A few minutes later, I get attacked. I was scouted pretty easily, and I did say that I was going mass cannons, but nobody believed me until they each scouted me. By the time the mutas attacked, I had a large decent wall of cannons. A few minutes later, I hear the dreaded sound of seiging tanks. Having no attacking units at all (not even a gateway), I sent my probes to do the dirty work. The threat was repulsed, but I was running low on minerals.
So I scouted right (heh, I didn't scout either, I was in the bottom left base) and I came across the old base of the dropped player. I had one probe scouting, so it brought down the CC there, built a nexus, and laid down a small cannon wall. I sent my probes to mine at my new base, but right when my probes left, tanks poured in. But VERY luckily for me, they seiged right when a group of mutalisk flew by and killed them. Over the next 20 minutes, my old base was constantly attacked by multiple forces, and my cannons slowly whittled down.
At that time, I was afraid that I was going to be found again at my new location, so I went and started building pylons at random places all over the map. At first, it was only one or two, but as time passed, instead of building things for me to make attacking units, I made more pylons throughout the map. Eventually, the whole map was covered by pylons, and I had vision of nearly everything (except the insides of the player's bases, though I tried to capture a SCV to get comsat). Any attacking force had to move across the map instead of attacking, since it would take too long to kill pylons that would be replaced as soon as they were out of sight. That led to situations where player would run into a large force of units and got slaughtered when they didn't attack back.
Anyways, at the end, I boasted that I owned the map since I could see nearly everything. But, I had to leave for some sleep, so, I left the game (I couldn't have won, on guy had massed carriers and various support units, and was over more than half the map in terms of bases and forces).
Now to get back on topic.
Are there any 256×256 maps that are random? I haven't seen one that was, all the ones I've seen are pretty symetrical.
I might just try and lose 3487 minutes of my life building one... I always hated 256² maps, they are uberly too big for absolutly nothing... Not even good for 8 players... 12 should do the thing xD
Try (8)Octopus, not truly symetrical, but great fun... but if all else fails, I could make an 8 player map... 256x256 if need be... but it will take some time as I am working on my RPG.

It'd be fun if you were playing w/ your friends. Or at least people you knew...
<sarcasm>
Yeah it would be great. IF I could get 7 other friends to submit themselves for who knows how long to play a 4v4.
But they seem to only want to play games that take real skill. 1v1's. Damn them!
</sarcasm>
4v4 = boring... 3v3 = fun... 2v2 = great... 1v1 = *BLANK*
4v4s aren't boring. They're really fun, depending on the level of carnage. And some large 8 player maps allow to do allow to do weird things, like massing large amounts of Dark Archons and MCing all your n00b opponent's stuff (it's really nice when executed in BGH or some other similar maps). Really nice for backstabbing.
Large 8 player maps with about 5 players also makes more large and bloody battles, since the LARGE abundance of resources.
It'll turn into a one vs none after its done lagging anyway.
... No, it doesn't really lag much. Typically, one guy drops and the rest just continues. The lag isn't that bad. Well, for me anyways. I don't know about other players though. I do play 4v4s often, so I think it's no rally bad in terms of lag.
