When l been browsing threw reading post that people make some people mention strings. What do they do and what are they?
When you enter a name for a location, it is a string.
When you enter a comment, it is a string.
When you enter a display text, it is a string.
It is any text that is entered into the map that is not already built-in.
okay thx now l will no what people are talking about when they mention strings

A string is also used when you name a switch or import a sound. These days it's not murder, but back in the old days you couldn't recover strings used in that fashion.
The maximum number of strings you can have is 1024 so don't comment every trigger you do or you might run out very quickly.
It is possible to use more strings but I do not know of any editors that are capable of doing this at the moment.
Techically, a string (programming) is a variable using all characters, not just numbers or something else.
okay thx for some more help on strings

Yeah because Starforge
doesn't
allow you to change it.
It sucks at it though.
Strings are very important. If we didn't have string limits, maps would be huge. C'mon Heim!! Let's get to it!! We want strings!!!

Starforge has a string editor, and why would you be telling starforge's creator what it can't do?
Heimdal, are you talking about the effect you can get with GUedit where you expand your max strings? (although its not direct)
I was being sarcastic while pointing out such an editor exists. I guess I wasn't obvious enough for everyone.
And he just posted something contrary to what his program allows people to do (unsucessfully at that). So don't start talking to me about that.
Heimdal wasn't talking about editing strings, he was talking about using more than 1024.
PS. Sarcasim is hard to show though the use of text. At least now I understand what you weird color use was for.
I think that you can change the limit using proedit, not sure though. Also you should check if SCMDRAFT2 does it.
Anyway a map with more than 1024 strings is not openable in X-tra/Staredit so it is not really useful right now. Also there is a character limit that cant be broken due to the chk format.

I know what he was saying. And StarForge lets you change the the string limit (unsucessfully). How many times do I have to point this out?
Do you not know? Open Starforge, open a map, and go to Tools > Options. Why would he put that in there if he didn't intend for people to use it?
Those values are decreased to make SF less laggy. And just because starforge 'allows' you to add more or something doesn't mean that it is actually possable. The map will just be corrupted.
Like you could play 5000 units in a map but it would be over the max and starforge wouldn't run it. Its the same with trigger actions and conditions. Uhh Heimdal help me out here . . . I only half way know what im talking about.
Anyways i tested a map, took a map that had max strings. Opened it up in starforge and created two new locations (with new names) then coped two triggers with comments. Then i saved it as a differant name. After i was done neither SC-Xtra or Starforge would open the map.
Well then thanks for confirming that I'm not going insane and that what I said was true.
There is no Max Strings option in the options window in Starforge. You can change memory allocation for triggers, briefings, sprites and units only.
I have previously added a 1025th string via hex and SC played the map just fine. Extended string capacity for Starforge is on my to-do list...

Yes. You can place as many units as you want in Starforge (up to 65535) and you can still look at the map, but the excess units get deleted. (I'm pretty sure about this)
