Ok there's been contests popping up all over the place, but only a handful have actually gotten any serious participation I've observed. Part of the reason is commitment. Unless there's a decent prize, or else some kind of glory/recognition, it's not going to hold people's interests for long. The other reason is accessibility, since as most map makers know, making SC maps is not exactly a picnic, especially if it's something meant to be winning prizes in a contest.
Anyway, how about something that doesn't require either to be part of it. The idea is simple: I give you a theme, and you make a map of it to the best of your ability. The themes will be fairly simple, so I'm not asking you to make anything that should take more than an hour or two if you have a good idea of how to go about making it. But instead of an hour, I'm giving a whole week!
Prize? Well since I lack anything material at the moment, here's what you get instead:
- 1st Place: 500 minerals.
- 2nd Place: 250 minerals.
- 3rd Place: 100 minerals.
- 4th, 5th, and 6th Places: 50 minerals!
So there you go! It's almost as if you can't lose.
There won't be any stringent rules for this contest, except that it cannot be a stolen map or idea (unless credit is given where it's due) and it must be something relatively new (no previously posted maps, for instance). So without further adu...
The theme for this week is: Make an RPG-style boss battle! Actual RPG stuff optional (bonus points only if it's relevant to the actual battle, but don't get carried away).
You have until Sunday @ midnight to post your entries here (don't care if they're protected or not). Happy mapping!
Sunday, January 30th, right?...
This sounds awesome! Will participants be able to see the winning maps?
Yeah. Actually now that I think of it, it doesn't have to be strictly RPG battle stuff. Especially since most SC rpgs are not, in fact, true rpgs by definition anyway.
Well whatever: Make a boss battle. RPG or not.
EDIT- Of course. You're posting your maps in the thread after all. Don't worry about excess quality or advanced-level stuff, just do your best to make a cool boss battle.
Hmmm....this may get me thinking of a boss idea for my upcoming rpg.

i'll try and do a really good one, this sounds fun.

good luck to you all.
Yes a boss battle hmmm. Boss battles can be any battle actually in a sense of things. Like 200 angry pigeons flying at a lone farmer could be a boss battle in one map and just an average defence stage in another map.

I love twisting things. I will see what I can do if I am not lazy.
In this map you have to kill a computer controlled ghost. Easy right? ....right?
Sounds like fun, i shall start on it!
Edit: Well, you should also say Tux has be a new map not old..
Isn't weekly too excessive

Besides, we may have a really huge map making contest coming up where we're partnering up with some other sites... more on this later.
So this will keep us busy till then

Just a boss battle? If so I have a great idea!!
Well this isn't a huge contest, Yoshi. At least, not by standards or participation or effort. It's called experimental for a reason, you know. I've got some twisted theme ideas coming up for later weeks!
Also, if anyone wants to meet me (on the rare occasion I get on bnet) I'll be in op Tuxedo-Templar on east, so if you want to show me a boss battle you made I'll be on *checks watch* well, most of today I think. Might be afk at some points, though.
EDIT1- Hmm, is a week too much time then?
EDIT2- I'd prefer a new map, mog. But I wouldn't be able to tell or not if it is, except by file date (which is easy to compromise).
I'm interested i'll start something.. i'll probably make it saturday... nice about about the concept..
Well I made this boss centered battle based on Metal Gear Soild 3: Snake Eater.
So not much of plot explanation. I can't test it right now, but tell me if I screwed something up...
Okay, I think I got teh battle done, ya gotta fight through lesser enemies to get to it though...
Hmm, should I be rating these as I go or waiting until the end? I think I'll wait till the end, so I can judge them all side by side. Hows that sound?
I could also cut down the deadline, since I figure a week is just so people who don't find out about this right away can get in on it.
I got a real cool theme lined up for next time. If there's enough showing for this one, I'll host another.
EDIT- Any chance we could get some news for this (get more participation)?
Keep the deadline at Sunday and you might get some more interesting ones.
Well we can't really get more people if this gets moved to 2nd page...
We can either shorten it to like, Friday or I can just post and bump it...
Well I get the feeling Yoshi's gonna butt this out with his own idea (judging by the above post), so I doubt this'll get news.
But the mineral offer still stands. It's not like I need them myself.
Maybe if it was real money though...
Wow, This theme is perfect for the map I'm making.
And since maybe about 6 ppl will enter I'll be sure to win some minerals.

ok heres mine. its very tough and pretty basic but its possible to beat. it took me a lot ot trys to win.

Hope I can finish my map by the deadline, but it's sure to get me some much needed minerals (I'm so rich, I have over 150!)...
Same with mine ... same with mine ...
Mine's gonna rule... It's kinda like the temple boss battles in the Zelda games... Different forms, and junk. Gonna be awesome.
«--Who's rich now?...
Sweet. I'd like to see some 8 bit style bosses in SC. Some of the best of all time came from those oldies.
Dude, you're going to love mine.
I thought this was a quick map test, didn't know people were making such big projects. So mine will be alright.QUOTE(Tuxedo-Templar (In game))
Tuxedo-Templar: whoa
RexyRex: Yeah it's a bit bright huh?
Tuxedo-Templar: i didnt mean spend
Tuxedo-Templar: 15 hours
RexyRex: Lol.
RexyRex: Meh.
