Staredit Network -> Games -> Overated Games
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Revelade on 2005-01-24 at 02:54:10
Ads of games make me sick... when I realize they are worth less than half of what they ask. Some games:

- Super Smash Brothers series: I mean of course it was popular, but when I come to think of it, it's mostly repetitive gameplay. Games with depth should have this kind of popularity, but once you get the characters, it's pretty much over. There's nothing to master like combos in other fighting games, and even then, there's no deep combat system.

- Halo series: I'm not going to say it's a bad game. It's just that I fail to see how this is "ground-breaking", as some critics have said. I mean dual weapons has been done before (look at Red Faction II), and the graphics don't make me go oooh or ahh like Resident Evil 4. I like the shield feature, but I just find this game... well boring.

- Unreal Tournament series: It's good when it's deathmatch, but I find the gameplay yet again repetitive. Sure it has mods, but then again, this game requires your pc to be upgraded.

- Tony Hawk series: The 2nd one was golden, enough for me to buy a PS. I mean, they dragged the series way too far with 3, 4, THUG, and now THUG2. Tell them to start new games.

- Counter-Strike, Metal Gear Solid: They need to stop saying this is realistic.

- Pokemon series: If they stopped at a pair of games for each system, I'd actually buy them. This series needs a TOTALLY new direction or needs to stop. Stop using kids to fill your pockets Nintendo, it's just wrong.

- Sports Games: I'm getting sick of "a new one a year" trend. Seriously, these games need dramatic improvements before getting released, not just a handful of players, a card mode, etc. I'm talking about big changes like a deeper tackling system. Which brings me to my next point...

- EA: They need to be stopped. Some of their games are somewhat average, but they butchered the 007 license which was golden thanks to Rare on the N64. Not only that, but they are gobbling up licenses such as the NFL, NCAA, and more.

The Sims is extremely overated. 9 expansion packs? WTF, then they make a Sims 2. And The Sims is actually a pretty popular game too. You cant even win.

Coming to NCAA there is no License there due to the players can not be license or it voids there scholarships and elgebility to play college atheletics its just alot of people like to stay away from college football, why you think NCAA 2005 does not have players names its b.c they can not be licensed. As for NFL license the NFL were the ones that actively wanted to sell there rights. EA having the better NFL game and more money Bought the NFL rights I mean honestly you can't tell me you would want Sega to make the only NFL game right. But EA is pretty terrible in some respects just clearing up two things that bothered me and wasn't there fault.

Halo 2's mutliplayer is groundbreaking but yea thats about it. But if you look at the console aspect then yes a lot of that is groundbreaking.

Most Overrated Games for me are the Grand Theft Auto series. They get repetive and the feature like the gang wars thing is neat but the AI sucks and its so easy to just kill them. The missions in the later games got dumber and dumber and making it more mature really was dumb I think. It gets repetive and has no replay value what so ever.

Ok who wants to kill him first? =)

Resident Evil 4 is definitely not overrated. You have to play it to see.

Might I add Fable as overrated?

Revelade, just give me a Big Stick and a towel to clean any blood that might splash on me.

Every single SIM game. WTF? is up with these games...? I get dumber everytime I play them.

Most sports games are overated because it's the same thing over and over.

Baldur's Gate 2 was overated, it was very boring after you got 1/4 way through the game

Hm, I wish I could disagree with you on the Halo Series being overrated, except for the fact that for it to be such, it would have to be about half as rated as it is, though, of all mentioned categories that I have tried, I like Halo2 most.

You can say that on any fighter game, but this one had known characters, a storyline that didn't consit of beating a guy 1 after another and another. It had those other cool levels like find the triforce and stuff. It's better then any other fighter game. It's not "THA BESSST GMZE EVA" so I wouldn't consider it overrated

Well I like halo, hate everyone else who likes it though, they're like brain dead zombies who are annoying as hell.

QUOTE
- Unreal Tournament series: It's good when it's deathmatch, but I find the gameplay yet again repetitive. Sure it has mods, but then again, this game requires your pc to be upgraded.

You don't NEED mods. Plus Unreal is a classic, so don't diss it.

THUG was cool, it had a well put together storyline, and I haven't seen THUG 2. But I like the series. It should stay, it's not overrated I never heard anyone say that it was good or bad. Just "Yeah I have that game"

QUOTE
- Counter-Strike, Metal Gear Solid: They need to stop saying this is realistic.

Counter Strike? No. Getting shot 40 times is not realistic. Metal Gear Soild is realistic though. Feeding yourself, getting tired, gun shots stay in your body you have to peel them out. It's all realistic, not to mention the graphics. It's one of the most realistic games out there. The bosses are werid sure, but who cares, it's still cool.

- Pokemon series: If they stopped at a pair of games for each system, I'd actually buy them. This series needs a TOTALLY new direction or needs

After Ver Red and Blue the series went downhill. So it sucks now, not to mention the annoying new characters.

Madden is awesome, but it's only updated once a year because of the new players on each team, and in between they try to add new features and better graphics, other then that there's nothing wrong with the series. Not overrated it's good.

I've never heard counter strike described as realistic. I'ts just an amazing shooter with great teamplay elements, fun strats for maps (scrims), and unlimited room for improvment.

The game i dont get is FFVII, so many fanboys for this game "best rpg ever" i tried playing it and i couldnt stand it. I know it looked amazing for when it came out, but FFVI was much better in terms of gameplay and story.

I also happen to think that most RPG's in general are overated.

Sports and sims have already been said.

Thats all i can think of but im sure theres more that sucks, there always is

Maybe you didn't understand me right. SSB is a fun game with 3 others, but as a single player game, it lacks substance. I mastered pretty much everything in a week. Sure you could get more trophies, characters, but the game play is pretty much the same through out the game, even with the new old game style stages. In other games, you have moves that take time to be mastered and you have more than 4 moves per character. Again, I will say it's a fun party game, but Soul Calibur II is a much better game.

QUOTE(Golden-Fist)

Actually, it's a mindless shooter with a retarded storyline and repetitive gameplay. Kill, kill some more, and guess what, kill. Of course if you like these kinds of gameplay, sure it's a true classic, but after an hour of play, I'd like to know I made progress, instead of in the same position. I never said you needed mods, of course you could just play a game like Half-Life without Counter-Strike right? =)

Metal Gear Soild is realistic though.

Hahahahaha, and ha. Yes, because we all know cyborg ninjas can cut through bullets and sons are now "cloned" from their dads. It's about as realistic as Mario.

Repetitive gameplay? Why not just go ahead and say that to every censored.gif ing fighting game out there? I mostly see repetitive gameplay. SSB has much depth to it. Controls are overall same for the characters, but the perfect combinations for their moves are something people need to master. And this IS a deep combat system. You must knock people out and all that stuff. There's even a Stamina mode in which you can play with actual HP.

Boring = Bad. Boring games are never a good or OK thing. Therefore it can only mean it's a bad game because it failed to get your interest or attention. So indirectly you're saying it's a bad game not as in the game sux or nething.
And what makes this game so great is the capability of playing on Live. The story is actually pretty good (except for the abrupt ending).

I agree with you in this though. Only the 1st one was any good. 2nd was ok then the rest had way too many variables to it and therefore, gayed the game up.

Super smash brothers does not have much "depth" to it for a fighting game, but then again i wouldn't classify it under the same category as most fighting games (soul cal, tekken, KOF).

4 players and items that fall from the sky make it more of a party game.

Warcraft, its just too much of a repetive game, the map editor is too complicated for its own good, and its getting alot of attention from blizzard, but where have starcraft and diablo 2 have gone form them?!? confused.gif
Didn't warcraft 2 come out after starcraft (correct me if im wrong), because if it did, its a *ahem* crappy game compared to starcraft and its map editors.

- Counter Strike (I mean, its like 2 shot kills. People can stand more than that under the effects of adrenaline)
- Doom 3
- Fable (In a way, too little for so much hype)
- Warcraft

I can't think of anymore games right now.

I know of one good EA game off the top of my head, which is "Battle Field: 1942"

-MegamanX: I'm sorry blue Bomber but the game may change alot but its getting worse... I always thought you would get better in the series but I was wrong... 3D Why did you kill megaman!

-Megaman Battle Network: Ok THe game was fun after number 3 they game out with the number 4 which was boring and now number 5 GIMME A BREAK! I'm sick of same gameplay i want something diffrerent!

I see you haven't played Soul Calibur II a lot. Actually... you can jump. If you could master it in a week, why don't you prove it to us. Why don't you prove you can master all 20+ characters, each having 30 or so moves and get all their stances, strategies, and moves correct?

You can't compare Doom to something like Unreal. Doom was not the first FPS, granted, but it made an impact for other shooters to follow. I give them credits for this and the fact that since technology was not great back then, the game is golden for what it accomplished for the technology of that time. And even if you do compare it, at least Doom had a decent story and progress of opening doors with keys, etc. Unreal is pretty much all deathmatch, and the game only gets harder with the enemy having aim that gets tweaked to hackish levels.

Yes, I can read. There is a game like that, it's called the Sims. Splinter Cell achieves greater realism than Metal Gear Solid will ever get. Your argument is flawed due to the game having "super natural" elements such as cyborg ninjas, psychic powered people, and an arm made of freaking liquid...

Hey, Nintendo needs the money (seriously, they do). Anyway, the initial four weren't bad at all (green, red, blue, yellow), in fact the game was very unique and introduced a lot of hours of fun gameplay solo and with other people. The newer games are just expanding on that, but since I've already played the first 4 to death, I got extremely bored with all of the newer ones.
