Actually for a real hardcore player, i think they should be random. You forgot about that choice.

Protoss. People like to rant about how 1337 Protoss is, and when pople make makeshift skill-bars in their profiles, it seems that Protoss is usualy top.

Most newbish players (of whom there are many) choose Protoss because of the Zealot and the Carrier.
They learn to rush with those irritating things and then wipe out other players (usually terran) who have gone anti-goon. A lot of decent players' losses come from being Zealot rushed by a newb, as they just don't expect such a simple strategy to be used against them.
Oh, I mentioned Carriers too... A lot of less-skilled players are under the impression that Carriers are somehow 'Über' and then mass them. Unfortunately, by the time that they've massed Carriers, a terran player will know about it and will have assembled a force of Goliaths, BCs and Ghosts to totally own them. A squadron of cloaked wraiths can work wonders too...
