You summon, it fights. When it dies, you come in and finish off the battle.

Hah? I thought summon was only a powerful attack that did alot of damage, and costs alot of mana... Like in FFs...

yes , its more like a creature you summon thats fights for you ( I think)

Yes, a good example of a summoner is a Nercomancer from D2. You summon a skeleton, it fights for you. Simple as that.
