if you had toss vs zerg or terran, with no minerals on the map, toss would win if they were equally skilled players.

Wow... my little idea has turned out to be quite a disgussion...

A very confused discussion at that... I thought the idea about no gas at the main had been burnt out when I made my post so I made a new variation of it, then argued about it a little, and then people brought up the old idea again in the middle of all of it... ah well. Such is life.

it would be a good idea but only if one race was played between everybody. inbalenced like evry1 said.

no geyser at start isnt a good idea, it would only be cool, if it was a bloodbath type map, where you use almost zero gas.

sigh, it happend again =D I think we've beat to death that you can't have nothing at the start, maybe someone will read my post and comment on that =/ Whatever, I think I'll base my next map around it to give people an example (my mod of the idea not his).

Funny about 3 years or so ago I got tricked into joining a game on Bnet titled "All Terran vs Terran comp". I played "comp" games on Bnet then. Now I don't.. seems pointless to play a comp on bnet.

Anyways it turned out that the creator's map had no gas! Naive as the other 2 ppl I continued playing anyways. Soon it became apparent that the creator was playing a joke on us and had p-cannons flowing from his base towards the center of map. (this was a money map too... blushing.gif ) His cannons eventually went hostile on us and for the next 30 minutes my allies tried desperately to hold back the advancing pylons/cannons w/ rines. Rines were getting mowed down by the dozens and one kook decided to give up and leave game. It was 2 of us vs this ahole now and I was not giving up. I managed to float 5 raxes into his backdoor. He quickly started making cannons in his main, but it was too late. To this day I think this was one of my funnest backstab rebounds. If he had only gotten a bigger economy and supplemented his cannons w/ zealots there would have been no hope for us.

so terran is screwed without gas. Bunkers don't help because without the gas for range upgrade a cannon, sunken can sneak almost right up next to it.

lings/sunkens or cannons/zealots should beat bunker/rines everytime!

While Protoss CAN be very gas intensive (goons, reavers, temps), they are more reliant on having more minerals for the core of their army, zealots.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Chef on 2005-03-26 at 23:25:55
Really depends on the stratagy but I do know one thing... Protoss is home to the most expensive (gas wise) unit in the game. The Arbitor, 350 gas and very costly to lose... and that 350 doesn't even include the cost of it's spells and the tech buildings leading up to to it, since it is unlikly that you will have more than a few arbitors (they take quite awhile to build) in the longest of games you don't really make that gas back. Not that arbs don't own, it just takes a long time to get them and you never have more than 3. High Templar, necessary in almost any game, cost 150 a pop. Minerals are always fairly plentiful so there's no reason to bring that up. Protoss can easily get 5 gates on 2 bases constantly pumping out zeals. Zealots are hardly ever used in some matchups (PvP for one), and by that I mean they are not the main attack force. In any case this topic has been dead for so long I don't know why people keep bringing it up. It's like prodding a skelleton with a stick.

Hey temp, remember when you rushed me with arb? XD

Every game with protoss has Zealots I know that, I'm saying they're not the back bone of a mid to late game force in some matchups unless the Protoss is being starved of gas (which happens occasionally). It's not a tactic, it's a stratagy, going Zealots has nothing to do with tactics. I also don't really care that you beat some other n00b, if I wanted I could beat a n00b by massing firebats, who cares? Show me a rep of you in a C level game (on pgt) winning going pure Zealots. It won't happen. Pure Zealots can only win an early rush in the game if the oppenent screws up. Generally Zealot's don't take up more than 40% of an army late, and that's a little over the top. It really all depends on what the enemy is going, because Protoss are the countering race. If it so happens the oppenent goes a stratagy which will get raped by Zealots, then yes, you're probably going to see an army with 80% + Zealots.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, Zealots get raped by a lot of stuff, and are often used as fodder, not the real damage of the army after the early game... actually that's not even true, zealots do a shit load of damage... but if I were Zerg and I saw my oppenent going mostly zealots I know that I would get a lot of lurks, or mutes or ultras late game.

This idea has already been done. The map is called Vespene Rush. Its basically a regular map but at the center there are 2 gas. There is also a depleted gas at each base, but its depleted. Its pretty fun because you have to rush to the center to get control of the gas. Theres also a Mineral Rush where its the opposite. You have like only a few stacks of minerals. One has lots of minerals, but the others run out quickly. You can live off of it, but at the center there are normal stacks where you rush too. Its pretty fun, it makes gas intensive units more common, such as ghosts, dts, vessels, etc
