Well if we have a heads up, I'm sure humanity would prepare spaceships as a backup in case we cannot stop the asteroid. We would put all humanity's records onboard along with the fastest technology we possesse and shoot off into the stars in search of a new home.

Yeah I think the topic is dead. There's really only a few ways to answer the question: having fun before death, welcoming death, "Armageddon" jokes, and hope to escape the planet.

By time anything comes we will probably have made some sort of a machine to slow it down to give the atmosphere and us more time

If a meteor was coming, couldn't we just use the same tactics as what NASA did in the Movie Armageddon?  biggrin.gif

Maybe, but probably not. I think it would most likely be moving too fast. Besides it takes time to build such machines. ><

I think we would just use a laser. They have some capable of pretty amazing things in the military now... We probably couldn't use a nuclear bomb because surely that'd screw up the planet's atmosphere.

ADDITION:
How Would it screw up the planets atmosphere....

I was thinking..If meteors were to threaten our planet..our home..What would we actually do? Of course..People are saying to destroy them by having a team of astronauts go in and plant explosives, but what happens if that fails? Do we just sit around and await our fate? Our technology isn't as advanced as..using fancy lasers yet..But if it's too large to burn up in our atmosphere..what's gonna happen then as well? Does it mean "Game over man, game over"?

Well, First off. The astronaut' wouldn't be so carless on to making a mistake in blowing a meteor up.

But if some how that fail's. The the air force will be called in to shoot it down, Once it enter's earth's atmosphere.

Then, If some how that fail's, Then heat seeking missiles will be fired at it. And eventually after all of that, It's tiny pebbles falling down to earth.

Plus, Archaeoligits would know about it a year before it hit, So they have a year to figure out what there going to do with it.

Okay there are a few mistakes in there...

First, the meteor would be moving so fast that the Air Force would be unable to even hit it.

Secondly, missiles would be useless because it would take awhile for them to launch, and then there's the whole factor that some missiles do miss...

And third, archaeologists have nothing to do with space or meteors, unless they're historical.

Oh and the astronaut thing, that was just a joke inspired by the movie Armageddon. I doubt we'd attempt to place astronauts on a meteor in order to blow it up when we can assume that the Air Force and various missiles can hit it.

Well its more annoying that you're continually spamming. Repeating the same thing 4 times (not to mention the fact that it all has to do with ending this topic)in a topic in the Serious Discussion forum is nothing but pure spam. And the fact that you're getting away with it... meh...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Snake)Ling on 2005-06-28 at 16:42:15
Well, since nuclear missiles have a fall-out problem, it would be possible to use ICBMs with conventional warheads? It's not like you need to destroy the meteor. You just need to direct it away from Earth, so ICBMs packed chock-full of high explosives could probably redirect the meteor, if you had enough.

I'm closing this so this guy won't be able to put spam like this in the thread and getting overall cumulative posts for it. AND I have been proven wrong, I have to admit.
