Staredit Network -> Serious Discussion -> Meteors
Report, edit, etc...Posted by HorroR on 2005-06-25 at 16:33:15
I was thinking..If meteors were to threaten our planet..our home..What would we actually do? Of course..People are saying to destroy them by having a team of astronauts go in and plant explosives, but what happens if that fails? Do we just sit around and await our fate? Our technology isn't as advanced as..using fancy lasers yet..But if it's too large to burn up in our atmosphere..what's gonna happen then as well? Does it mean "Game over man, game over"?

I would tell you my honest story but... it most definetly doesn't belong in serious discussion...

If we have a 50 year heads up, and we all know cetain doom is coming, I'm more than positive we'll unite and research new technology to help destroy the meteors. If we're under pressure, we can go pretty fast. I mean, look at WWI and WWII.

If we don't have the technology, we'd would just die. There would be nothing we could do. Alphs definenetly has a point, however.

I think we would die to. But depends what kind of meteor. What would happen if the meteors disintegrated in the atmosphere, then we would all live.

In the situation I'm trying to say..as in one that doesn't burn up in the atmosphere

It still depends how big upon impact. A meteor that is burned down to 1 foot in diamter and hits Earth won't exactly, cause the apocolypse now, would it?

The beauty of it is that, we do have the technology and we have about 10~20 years in advance.

We have so much time in advance beacsue we have our normal orbit of 365 days around the Sun. Now if there is any meteor than can hit the Earth, it has to have an orbit that crosses the elliptical orbit of the Earth. This gives us a big advantage because we can determine quite easily in years in advance where all the Earth orbit metors will be in the next years and compare them to the time of when the Earth will be at that time.

Now to save ourselves is quite simple. We do not need to blow it up like most average people and movies relate to us. It is quite simple, when the meteor is between .75 and 1.00 of the way to the moon, we would detonate a nuke right in front of it. This would not destroy the meteor causing millions of meteorites to collide with the earth, it would just reflect the path of the meteor at an angle causing us to miss us.

If a meteor was coming, couldn't we just use the same tactics as what NASA did in the Movie Armageddon? biggrin.gif

10-20 years? I wouldn't call it a threat if we had that much time

Basically if it didnt burn up, we'd be screwed unless we had some kind of laser or robot technology.

Maybe.. But we already have laser technology to some extent (lots and smalls eat razor)(well something like that). I think by the time we knew the meteor was coming (at least 2 years in advance) we c0uld do something to deter it. As beer said we could just redirect its path, for example toward the sun or toward the moon. (that could be dangerous though.. tides will change). I dont know how anything else could work though. If its 100% 100% deadly, then we sit around and twiddle out thumbs. If its 50% deadly, we hide in bunkers. (very underground)

I think if a meteor were to hit is in the near future and we could do absolutely NOTHING to stop it, then I think humans will achieve some kind of world peace of something before we become extinct. We will contemplate on the meaning of life and become one with mother nature. Either that or the world will go into utter chaos and kill eachother before the meteor kills us.

Though I think a meteor that would be possible to stop only if we unite together and work hard to get the technology would make the world better. It would unite everyone and create a huge burst in technology. Just like what WWI and WWII did for us. Like Alpha said.

Wasn't there like an asteroid called Eros or something that scientists said would collide with us in the future? And didn't they land a probe or satellite on it.

I don't think directing it to the moon or then sun would be a good idea now would it? Moon gets destroyed all those fragments fall to earth and the sun... well I have no clue except that a big solar flare can come up.

i agree with the moon thing, but if we send it to the sun, it would just burn up. and who said we would have 20 -30 years. what if we have, oh lets say, 6 months....you know it IS a big ass sky as billy bob said. and NASA wouldn't make it public that were going to get hit by an astroid. that would chaos mass chaos.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by lonely_duck on 2005-06-26 at 13:21:54
first off ALL meteors burn up from the atmosphere whats left is a very fast propelled gas like object and second about the moon we shouldnt do that idea because the moon is what keeps our seasons in place without the moon no seasons and one or mabye both hemispheres would become cold desolate places.and the sun i dont know maybe...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Staredit.Net Essence on 2005-06-26 at 13:25:08
the moon has mothing to do with the seasons. the moon is responsible for the TIDES not the seasons. they com from the earths rotation around the sun. but yes, is we send it to the sun, then it would just burn up. it wouldent hit it, nomatter how big it is.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Ultimo on 2005-06-26 at 17:16:02
The intensity of the sun would probably burn it up before the meteor managed to collide with it. Even if we did, it wouldn't be much worse then actually get hit by it.
All we need to do is create an extremely large explosion in front of it, as BeeR_KeG said, possibly with a nuke, to change it's path.

And let's get the terms right please.

A bright trail or streak that appears in the sky when a meteoroid is heated to incandescence by friction with the earth's atmosphere. - Meteor

A stony or metallic mass of matter that has fallen to the earth's surface from outer space - Meteorite

A solid body, moving in space, that is smaller than an asteroid and at least as large as a speck of dust. - Meteroid

It wouldn't be a meteor, since a meteor is when a meteroid burns up in the atmosphere. So what if a meteroid were to hit us. -.-

i do belive that this topic is now over. and you killed it devlin.i move for a close for thias topic. all in favor?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Snake)Ling on 2005-06-26 at 20:56:44
No. I have something more to say.

Its that I heard on the Science Channel that NASA predicts a meteoroid has a 1/38th chance of hitting Earth in 2029 or some near-future date. I half-believe it.

We COULD avert a meteoroid strike though. Perhaps by using ICBMs to blast the meteoroid out of Earth's path? If we send the object into the moon, we'd have to make sure it didn't hit the side that faces Earth, or the debris would give many people an exciting and short life.

why would you want to send a metior that could end life on this planet to the moon? say that it desroyes the moon. no more tides. massive tsumamies. theres a good plan. all we would have to do ,if we were going to send it anywhere, is send it at the sun. it burns up, and that ends that.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Ultimo on 2005-06-27 at 00:01:15
I'm not sure how that ends it.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Staredit.Net Essence on 2005-06-27 at 00:08:05
how so? i dont see how burning the meiorite into small bitts dose not end it. its not like in DBZ(common example) when when you beat one bad guy a bigger stronger bad uy comes out of mo where. and i dont think that the tiny matior bits will turn around and get us....OH NO, THE CHARRED METIOR BITS AND COMMING BACK TO KILL US ALL!!! lol
sory bout the spam

I say we send a team of pseudo-astronauts to fly to the meteor and destroy it. And Aerosmith could do the theme song for it!

Oh wait, that was "Armageddon."

I think that if a meteor were to be travelling to Earth to kill us, I'd probably do everything I'd ever wanted to do in life before the damn thing obliterates us. Other than that, I'm not really sure quite how to answer this.

I mean I figure some nation would suggest nuking it, and the nuclear fallout would hit our atmosphere and destroy us. Or there would be a competition among nations to see who would destroy it first. My bet goes toward Japan - they'll pull some Katamari Damacy stuff on it and save the planet.

i dont know who would get it eather. we would peobobly get fed up with it and just go out and send 2 or 3 up there and take all the glory....(go president____) but yes, if i were going to die that way i would want to die in the way i always dreamed. having sex while watching tv eathing a subway.....thats heaven happy.gif right there.
