Staredit Network -> Website Feedback, Bugs & Discussion -> Reason why the swearing filters are now so big

Basically because of the way we live and what we hear, it seems that swearing is "cool". This can be proved through listening to any mainstream rap.

Now I know everyone's gonna go "OMG NO THATS NOT TRUE YOU STUPID censored.gif ROCK LOVER"

Let's use some metal songs shall we! They may say fudge in there about 4 times. Let's listen to mainstream rap! They say fudge in there about 15-20 times!

Let's face it, mainstream rap is the most popular music in the U.S.A. today, the language in there really does rub off on people. Underground rap I've notced, and experimental rap/alternative rap, doesn't cuss all that much.

Now I'm not directly blaming rap. I'm blaming all these censored.gif ing sheep who can't formulate a complex sentence without having to say " censored.gif the censored.gif ing censored.gif ers."

There are some peole like me who couldn't give a rat's censored.gif about it because they're words. If you are offended by words, then there might be something wrong with some of the neural conenctions in your brain sending negative feedback signals to a bunch of scribbles on paper or a string of vibrations moving through whatever medium you live in.

I just see over-excessive cussing and cussing for no damn reason to be stupid and definately shows your intelligence, not offensive at all.

Maybe for v.5 you can enable "Show Profanity" "Hide Profanity" options in the UserCP automatically set at "Hide Profanity" when an account is first created.

I just think that some of the new censored words, when censored, will confuse people into thinking that they are using even more profane words.

After IP kindly sent me the list of filtered words, I can see that the list isn't too extreme after all. Maybe just make the exact spelling of censored.gif sexual acceptable?

I've suggested the ability to see swear words way before I became an admin... it's not possible in senv4. However, in senv5, I'm attempting to make it as optimized as possible to save bandwidth and be less server intensive. A big preg_replace statement in post display would certainly kill script execution time.

As with the optimization of senv5, currently, if the server is lagged, senv4 almost refuses to load. Senv5 loads almost perfectly with the lag. I'd like to continue down that path, even though that type of option would be nice.

And I agree, the range of swear words is pretty huge happy.gif. Personally, I don't think there's nothing wrong with swearing... you just think it's bad because the general society does. It's like implanted in your head it's bad. There is no difference between saying "You are a shi.t head" and "You are an airhead"... you can consider both equally bad. There's no difference between saying "oh, sh.it, I forgot..." or "oh, gosh, I forgot...".
I'm thinking, at one point, society will accept this.

Now... as with rap, I love it (and rock, metal, alternative), and generally, I don't find your opinion true shadow. Rap doesn't have any more swears in it that the same type of rock song would have. Of course... with rock... you don't have any of the "get the censored.gif out to the dance floor" and such as type of songs.

Rap is rhythmic speaking, like poetry, without any dexterity or arcane knowledge of the language. It is considered "music," yet it lacks the emotion, intelligence, and vibrance of even a single chord of an orchestrated suite. The lyrics are bad (and I mean downright hideous to anyone half proficient with the English language), the use of profanity is entirely unprofessional, and it preaches (mainstream rap here) naught but anger, vengeance, fear, and all the bowels of a society where we have degressed to feuding tribes. It teaches nothing of honor, of wisdom. In my opinion, and I pray in all of your opinions as well, that rap is a blight to music.

No, MAINSTREAM RAP does that. Underground rap is cool and actually sounds good not just like some guy who's been smoking for longer than he's been alive is talking with a monotone beat going on the the background making your ears bleed.

I fear the music you listen to... whatever that is. Your entire post is simply censored.gif ed. Seriously.

Shadow... what type of "mainsteam" rap have you actually heard? Btw, I label hip-hop as rap as well, if that means anything to you.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by ShadowBrood on 2005-07-15 at 19:35:37
It does, 50-Cent (made my ears bleed and went back to classic rap).

Edit: Mainstream is the kind of censored.gif you seen on MTV 24/7/365 because it so "good" it has to be cool.

Basically if it's played on the radio it's mainstream and I have to agree that all mainstream rap and most of mainstream music in general just sucks.

Oh, I can say something sucks, can I say it blows?

I can say it blows too, nice, can I say it's censored.gif ?

Nope, guess I can't call it happy.

You fear classical? You fear pop (orchestrated)? You fear normal rock?

Your musical selection is simply censored.gif ed. Seriously.

i agree... but isnt rap kinda getten off subject? sense i dont think any of us willbe expressing our musical opus in time soon via the wide world of forums? How do u rap on a forum? there would be no beat...

i also think it's funny how all of you are complaining about not having swearing becuase it means that you couldn't be understood but so far ive understood everyhting thats gone on in this post and no major swearing has been involved other then the admin circumnavigating the protocols that everyone else is living by, by adding in . or spaces in between his letters...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by ShadowBrood on 2005-07-15 at 20:57:19
No what's annoying is how some people will think that censored.gif is censored.gif . The first one was urinating and the second was fudge.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Felagund on 2005-07-15 at 21:05:24
Does it matter? We can't get in trouble for swearing, not that that was a big problem anyway (or so I've believed).
Report, edit, etc...Posted by noisuk on 2005-07-15 at 22:07:26
Yoshi I have a quesion.

If the community of SEN proves to you we can use swears, but at a minimum (such as 1 a week of 2 a week). Would you consider going back to normal filters?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by EzDay281 on 2005-07-15 at 22:11:13
Well, I'd be making a big rant if not for the fact that Moose pretty-much summed up everything I was going to say, minus many little details, in post #20.

QUOTE
In fact whenever I see a censor like this for words that aren't really bad words, it makes the post even more degrading!

Not sure if Devilesk thinks this for the same reason I do, but it makes what could be considered a normal, intelligent post at most forums, higher or lower quality than SEN, look like half the words in it are swear words. Which they are not, since half the words that are now censored aren't.

Now, why in God's name aren't damn, hell, bitch, and whore censored?
The last two words I have never seen in a serious debate and only as explitives, the first two are usualy used by Christians and even then are often replaced with things like "firey afterlife" or some such.
And yet the long-form for "testes" is censored...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Yoshi da Sniper on 2005-07-15 at 22:12:17
Just so you can go back to swearing? Just look at this topic. Theres a censored emoticon in almost everyones post tongue.gif

Probably because it's raised up too high.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Tuxedo Templar on 2005-07-15 at 23:39:09
Bah, I'd like to think we're mature enough to not have to bother with this swearing filter nonsense, but alas...

Maybe you should make a spam/idiocy quota for each member, and as long as they're not pushing their limits or being *last name=Tracy*heads they can go ahead and swear as part of their normal posting language... otherwise they just get censored.

Or is that an old idea?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Felagund on 2005-07-16 at 00:59:19
Ooh, if Yoshi made a script to detect idiocy... he'd make millions. Too bad there is no technology available to compute such high numbers.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Yoshi da Sniper on 2005-07-16 at 01:05:37
Actually, its very possible. You just take in a bunch of variables, including how many times an individual swears, how the community thinks of them, how many topics they make that actually are posted in etc
Report, edit, etc...Posted by IsolatedPurity on 2005-07-16 at 01:14:48
Yoshi, here's a simplish equation...
IF Repuation / 2 = Swear Count THEN censor words.
Whatcha think?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Mini Moose 2707 on 2005-07-16 at 01:44:39
How about no filters except on the big ones. Then if someone uses them a big one, bypasses, or flames with one, we deal with them. Essentially what we were already doing, but this time stricter and with harsher punishments.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by (U)Bolt_Head on 2005-07-16 at 03:38:12
I don't even know what to say, I'm appalled by how strict this is.

There is a serious differance between curseing at someone and curseing about something. I'm surprized you get so upset that your friend was offended of the light swearing here that you would take such rash actions as this.

Looks like it is about time for me to find a new hobby, this is rediculous.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by DT_Battlekruser on 2005-07-16 at 03:40:28
When swearing interrupts real words and stops smilies, it has gone too far.

It is ridiculous that you can't have a simple anthropologic discussion, because words like Homo Sapiens are censored.

( censored.gif Sapiens)
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Jordan on 2005-07-16 at 03:42:04
hey here is an idea for the filters and such. If people really see the words, make it available in the shop. That way some people that really want it can buy it for like 60 minerals and if the people who dont care leave it alone wink.gif. Its an idea wink.gif
