To upgrade your computer? Hmmm, if you spread out a new graphics card every 18 months, and a new cpu and motherboard every three years, I'm going to say that that will run you about $700 every three years for decent equipment. Heck, I'll even say that you can spend another $200 every three years if you want to upgrade the power supply, hard drives, optical drives, etc. So even if you want to spend $300 a year to upgrade PC stuff, you're still pretty good technology-wise. Many people can afford that. True, it's not cheaper than console gaming, but I prefer it. I think it has something to do with the fact that I can go play Oblivion on max settings (for image quality, monitors are so much better than tv screens, hands down) while downloading... legally some music, and then talking to my friends on AIM, surfing the web... etc. etc. The PC is so much more than a gaming platform.

Uhh, you can hook up your computer to a TV, just so you know.
And you can watch TV on your computer's monitor

And you don't need a "supercomputer", you just need a good computer, which is pretty expensive.
And Felagund, I don't think you'll really need to upgrade your hard drive any more, or power supply. If you have an SATA harddrive with like 250 GBs, I think you're set for a while, not three years.

Yeah but new technologies come out. SATA, NCQ, etc. etc. My 20" widescreen monitor is sharper than any TV I've ever seen. For $400 you could probably snag a 20" HDTV, but I really do prefer my monitor. Heck, you can pick up an Intel Pentium D 805 for $130 and overclock it a ton. It's dual core, and you can easily pump 3 GHz out of it. That's more than enough for Oblivion. Some things that you probably won't need to upgrade for a long time - memory, hard drives, and sound cards.

All you need a SATA HDD that has a 500GB-1TB of storage... then you are basically set for a long... long... long... time
. Also a 4 512MB of super low latency RAM (equivalent to 2048MB or 2G of RAM). You can just use a AMD Athlon 64 FX 55 Dual Core processor... (overclocked of course) and nVidia SLi 7k series... then you'll be set for awhile
