Staredit Network

Staredit Network -> Terrain -> City Terrain I'm working on
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Abyx on 2006-07-06 at 21:08:36
Yes, Dead's way completely kicks the buttocks out of mine, I was just experimenting to see if there was another way to do it, as I didn't want people to say I copied his work.

Plus I wanted a sad attempt at being original, as you can see, it doesn't work.

biggrin.gif

Darkblood, uh...I don't think I'm qualified for that, but if you wanna PM me more information or something, I guess I could give it a shot.

Edit: Maybe I CAN be sort've slightly original in Badlands terrain...

I was screwing around with the walls again, and I found a semi okay blend that could probably be better if I spent more time on it...

Side by side with my short wall for a comparison. Maybe if I could get it shorter, a better 'fence'?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Abyx on 2006-07-07 at 13:41:08
Yeah I know, I'm still having a sad attempt at finding somehow to make a sidewalk(In which case I'd get rid of the parkinglots, and yes, actually cities DO have them, NY has them atleast), if I can make this stupid thing actually slightly good, maybe I'll make a map out of it.

And I can't figure out how to do the cloaked bunkers, I've looked at all the tutorials for them, but I don't really...get it, I dunno, maybe because I've only tried doing it once.

Most likely I'll end up making all the buildings with DEAD's way...

I actually found a slightly okay 'blend'.

Only problem is....it...it's glowing. =\

Edit:

I scrapped it because it may look alright, it sucks for ingame stuff as it restricts movement.

I like them : O, tell me when you finish it. I'll keep looking in this topic for you to happy.gif.

Okay, opinions please.

Stoplights, think they look okay?

I think it looks pretty good, actually...adds abit more depth to the map.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Demon on 2006-07-08 at 20:37:56
Those look awesome they really make the roads seem smaller and more real happy.gif.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by n0b0dy- on 2006-07-08 at 22:16:53
Doesn't look very much like stop lights, but on starcraft I guess it's as close as you can get. Good picture, looks nice smile.gif Maybe you should create an air unit over them such as red, green, yellow to create a real stoplight and the coloring wink.gif Zombies crossing would totally rape.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Demon on 2006-07-08 at 22:28:25
I could just see a bunch of zombies lined up at a stoplight XD. I guess an air unit would make a good one, though I thought the ground ones looked cool happy.gif.

I like the stop lights... Everything else isn't too outstanding.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Mystic_Bardock on 2006-07-09 at 00:08:39
You know with Starforge pallette thing, you can make straight roads with the right type of terrain? And also good sidewalks and such.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Abyx on 2006-07-09 at 03:08:03
I can't really do too many things outstand with Badlands buildings, though apparently I can make all kinds of god damned walls. I swear... I never stop with the damn things.

And if you look closely, at the very tip of them you can see a box sort of shape and you can just imagine the red, yellow and green lights at them.

Now imagine them flickering with burning trash everywhere, cars crashed together with the blood of the fallen upon the ground. The sound of fresh flesh tearing as a reanimated slowly bites into it's victim that had deceased moments before hand, imagine the horror as your blood speeds up and your heart races, looking down at what might've been a nice person as it's half eaten face stares deep into you.

I thought it was cool, sorry.

And, I'm sorry, but I can't stand square terrain, I mean, I just.... I REALLY can't stand it.

I've also done 99% of all the tall buildings with DEAD's way, it looks alot better even though I feel dirty as I feel like I'm copying the style...but hey, what looks good, looks good.

I've given up on the sidewalks, as the way I designed the map and the buildings, if I add them, it'd look like scheiße and I'd have to completely redo the road lines, but I think I just might add those stoplights at all the intersections.

Here's a little ghost-city sample from the final chapter of Rush (sans sprites). Hope it'll give you some ideas.

Is it wrong that I feel really honored to have Tux post in my thread giving me a sample of his work to give me ideas?

By the way, your mini walls look weird. biggrin.gif

I'm gonna add all those 'stoplights' to the intersections and maybe customize the buildings abit more.

Edit:

Customize'd.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v399/Sha...hobuildings.jpg

Probably could've been done better, I need to use different stores for some buildings, I've been obsessed with that broken window'd one mainly because it looks...ya know...dead.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by smasher25 on 2006-07-11 at 11:11:55
how do you make multi-structured terrain?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Syphon on 2006-07-11 at 11:19:17
Those buildings need to be smoothed out a bit. And by a bit, I mean alot.

You make them in StarForge or SCMDraft, smasher. You go throguh the tileset index looking for tiles that look like a logical continuation and stack them up manually until it looks good.

(I can't stress the last step enough.)
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Abyx on 2006-07-11 at 13:19:04
The older style crappy ones, yeah, they do, and I DID smooth them out, I completely redid them.

I redid them in DEAD's style from how I see it, not much more I can do.

And I'm still checking this 'alleyway' look out as you can see it's not the greatest, I'm trying to make it better.... unless anyone has any suggestions?

Because now I'm making the buildings less one huge one and I'm breaking it down into small ones in blocks, so it's more claustrophobic, really.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by mayonnaise on 2006-07-11 at 14:21:15
"I'm a little clastrophobic though. I hope they don't put me in any tight spaces."

"I told em I was claustrophobic, I gotta get outta here!"

Good times. Not bad terrain. Keep on working on it and it will be awesome.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Abyx on 2006-07-11 at 15:49:38
Thank you... encouragement is nice right now, as I'm starting to like how this terrain is coming out, I might just make a map out of this someday.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v399/Shadow72/NewShot2.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v399/Shadow72/NewShot3.jpg

New shots... more buildings in the blocks(Probably gonna make more blocks out of the huge sections of buildings). If anyone has any suggestions for the alleyways to look better, I'd like to hear them... because if it's possible; I'd like to make it look better.

If not then...well... Oh well, I doubt the player(s) would see them either way. biggrin.gif

Mainly because if I really wanted to incorperate the alleyways, I'd extend the map to 192x192 and make a section for each of the alleyways and replicate their shapes. So if they choose to 'enter' them, you could.

I've also gotten rid of the parking lots and turned them into 'parking garages'.

And now, I've done basically all I can think of for the 'city', I've made the majority of the large buildings into building clusters, I've customized more and more of the buildings, made them abit more real with those windows(Spaced 'em out abit so it's not so rediculos). I've added the stop lights, put building fronts on most of the buildings, garage doors, removed parking lots and turned them into parking garages.

Really all I can do that I can think of, is maybe add manhole covers to the streets, touch up the buildings and stuff with sprites and maybe start adding wreckage and stuff.

You still have to learn alot man. Here, few shots form one map with a dead city I am working on. maybe they will help a bit. Good luck. smile.gif

From what I understand, there isn't much to learn. wink.gif

I recently(AKA today) played your GTA map abit, great stuff, but I don't really like the OMGOMGOMGOMOMGWINDOWSWINDOWSWINDOWS look, because, like when you think about it, imagine being in the building. Not every single building in a city will have windows for outter walls, so I'm trying to avoid doing that with all of the buildings.

Plus I like having not a million huge tall buildings, but rather a bunch of small ones and a few tall ones. The terrain I'm making isn't a huge famous city like New York City or L.A. or something, it's just a small one I've made up.

Plus, if I DO make this into a map, if it's okay with the creator, I plan on possibly making it a tribute to a mod for Unreal Tournament 2004(Killing Floor, if you wanna look it up), so this map would take place weeks after the total chaos, so everything would be in ruin.

And if you don't mind me asking, what kind of 'dead city' are you making? Abandonded or destroyed?

Edit:

Oh yeah, I noticed you're using the 3 stripes one way and two stripes another... I'm sure you know this, but why not just use the triple stripes from one of the brides?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Gigins on 2006-07-11 at 19:14:34
I'm not talking about windows. For example corners, you really need to improve those. Also don't put the buildings so close together. You can't walk between them and it they don't blend either.

Thanks for the stripe hint, I didn't think about it lol. smile.gif
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Abyx on 2006-07-11 at 19:17:52
I don't WANT them to be able to walk between them.

I don't really like the corners either, I don't really like the windows corners you use either.

That make the terrain kinda useless doesn't it? A big block of buildings that you can't walk or anything.
