Staredit Network

Staredit Network -> Terrain -> City Terrain I'm working on
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Abyx on 2006-06-25 at 20:46:43
Here's some stuff I'm trying to perfect as much as possible, I've been working on the whole 128x128 badlands 'city' as a whole for about three or four days, if I'm satisfied with the terrain enough, I figured I'd make a map out of it and such, as I'm not too horrible at triggers.

For awhile, even before I knew about extended terrain, I've always wanted to make the 'perfect city' to make an actual GOOD Zombie Epidemic story, so far I've made tons and tons of 'cities' out of regular isom terrain, I've made two or three, two on badlands and one on space platform...I never really liked them.

But personally, this new 'extended' one I've done, I like it, the tall buildings aren't that great as say the ones from Dead's GTA map, but I think they're alright... comments would be nice... here's a few screens taken from inside of the editor.

These are just random stuff, they aren't too bad...but nothing is finished.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v399/Shadow72/Screen5.png
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v399/Shadow72/Screen6.png

Here you can see I'm starting to have some blending problems..particularly screen no. 5, because I'm not sure how I'm gonna clean it up... number 4 is the same way, the corners of the lower walls(Which I just pretend are walls like wooden fences and stuff) are hard to blend...or if they're even possible to blend. I'm not sure.

And sorry for the random sizes, I don't know why it did that...I'll fix it later or something.

So....comments? Suggestions? Do I have potential or should I just give up and go sit in a corner?

Hm...some blockiness on the multi-leveled structures, that's for sure. Not bad, but it generally doesn't have that city feel to it yet. Maybe because the buildings aren't congested enough?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Abyx on 2006-06-25 at 21:12:31
As far as I know, there is no real way to get rid of the blockiness on the structures, then again I'm still working on it a little so I'm not quite sure yet.

And believe it or not, when I ran a marine through it ingame, it actually did feel like a city. It just gave me this feeling of massive structures and such, but then again...maybe that's just me. I can't really make it very 'congested' without making it look screwy.

I'm mainly trying to make it look basically even with everything else.

both SCMD2 and Starforge are capable of extended terrain. Starforge is slightly superior with its brush capabilities, while it has a chance of corrupting your map.

what terrain would that be though?

SO how exactly is this going to look like a city? A ot very good one at that! I am no terrainer but Cities are a bit different than that, I am not saying I could do better but mybe add some more stuff to it!

Next time take in game screen shots, or dont zoom out to 66% or something.

Since I can't figure out how to quote with these weird plus and minus signs..

7-7, it actually depends on the city. There are alot of cities that're actually like this, as I've said, this is WORK IN PROGRESS, it's no where near done.

Inspektah-deck, I didn't zoom out, for some odd reason, Photobucket resized them weird... next time read my whole post, as I said I'd get better ones in time.

Plus I'm trying to figure out if I can make some kind of blend to resemble street lights and maybe sidewalks too. You notice I made the streets rather wide, that's why.

I'm trying to make it appear realilistic(sp?) and not have it look retarded. I want the stuff to make sense. I'm not basing it off of any city I've ever been to, or even one that exists. I'm using my imagination, and as far as I know... around here, creativity is a plus.

Looks pretty good, but if you want to get more of a city feel, make more, smaller buildings instead of a few really big ones. When you compare those buildings to the size of units, they're huge. That said, I like alot of the arrangement you did in some of your shots. The only thing hurting the city feel is the excessively large structures.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Abyx on 2006-06-27 at 11:42:46
Actually, that'd be what I guess could be the 'buisness building' area of the 'city', I actually do have alot of smaller buildings, shopping district, stuff like that.

I'll get more shots.

Ah, I guess I could have been a bit quick on judging the whole thing, but really I can only judge from what I see. Do post some more shots; I want to see what you've done. smile.gif

I think I've learned my lesson with PNGs and Photobucket...

Anyway, there's some more shots of the smaller buildings.. I can only do so much with the store fronts that are included in the tileset, but I tried...

I'm also debating on extending the City to 192x192, and making a highway system out of the smaller walls and put some more buildings into the general area.

it looks alright, nothing special. i like the short walls, but thats about it.

ps why don't you just attach the images to your post?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Abyx on 2006-06-27 at 14:59:20
Nothing special because I don't work on it very often.

Because these forums are weird and I didn't even know I could do that, but it doesn't matter because I don't think I'm gonna spend time trying to figure it out when I can just use photobucket.

Run on sentance. biggrin.gif
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Zeratul_101 on 2006-06-27 at 15:27:58
err, its LESS work than photobucket... you jsut browse(just like with photobucket), add the images(same as photobucket), and then click add into post(or w.e it says).

If you would use a different method for building levels, they would look better. For this method I say, use windows to make levels look better.

Oh by the way, perfect city = only 256x256. wink.gif

Good luck on your map. biggrin.gif
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Abyx on 2006-06-27 at 17:28:39
I would use the windows, but you see, the non broken ones would indicate there might be life in them.

Dead citys = Fun.

I'm trying other ways to make them now...nothing worth posting.

And Zeratul...again, I wouldn't know...as I've said. These forums are different than the ones I've used to.

They look kinda bland to me. Some of the stuff is possible with plain old ISOM terrain.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Mp)Excalibur on 2006-07-03 at 17:06:08
Would you be intrested in doing the terrain for an RP im working on? This cityscape stuff is exactly what i need.

Yes there is a way to fix that. Rather then using the "wall" tile, look in the tileset for the "blue mirrors" and use the individual "blue mirror" tile rather then the conjoined one.

ps: nothing really new, all of this has been done as shown in DEAD's Grand Theft Auto map.
