No, that's why he's asking for one. tongue.gif

It certainly would make a new job for the Tutorial Keepers. You'd need a hell of alot more of them. Maybe even more than DLDB Keepers.

Hell, this could even be too big for v5. v6, anyone? shifty.gif

I think it's a wonderful idea.

Not really, we can just have a stricter set of rules for the wiki.
Ex:
QUOTE
False info = Ban
Spam = Ban
Messing things up = Ban
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Deathawk on 2006-08-07 at 11:33:17
I do not think giving false info is bad enough to give a ban.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by PCFredZ on 2006-08-07 at 12:54:44
How about new rules for the DLDB too while we're at it...

QUOTE
Useless maps = ban
Useless sounds = ban
Trojan mods = ban
Bounds =... oh wait I already said useless maps
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Syphon on 2006-08-07 at 12:58:26
I Second.

First off, what is a useless map?
Useless sounds? Again, explain what would be useless?
Trojans, I agree.
If I remember correctly, there are bounds in the DLDB... not sure if that was a joke..

I disapprove of this idea of a wiki. There's a perfectly legitimate "SUBMIT" button in the tutorial DB that anyone can use. Making it a wiki would only add the ability for people to screw up already-posted tutorials.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by in_a_biskit on 2006-08-11 at 06:17:22
But it could, on the other hand, make it much faster for tutorials to be submitted and displayed, and make it possible to improve on or edit a lot of tutorials (that should be updated) relatively easily. You'd just need enough people who know what they're doing to visit and contribute to the wiki (which, I admit, might not be the case, given that experienced map makers probably don't need to visit the tutorial DB very often).

Addition:
Whether or not a change this major is worthwhile also depends on how often new tutorials are submitted and how often people want to update the tutorials. But still I agree that the tutorials DB could do with a makeover, to make it easier to find new/good/recommended/frequently visited tutorials, make it more visible to those who need help, and much easier to submit and edit tutorials written by yourself or others.

Also, if a tutorial is complete, it can easily be protected from damage by using the 'protect' option, and then unprotected when an update is needed. This is done by the sysops.

I like this so long as there's a lock option, and only the maker can lock/unlock a tutorial.

Me neither, at least not in the modding tutorials since there's so many unknowns that you can't get everything right.

ADDITION: I think it would work pretty good if it also required you to be a regular + to prevent as much spam.

NO THANKS!
I DONT WANT EVERYTHING TO BE INTO WIKI!
I RATHER GO AGAINST THE POPULAR CHOICE OF MOST FORUMS NOW!
ITS MUCH EASIER TO JUST GO TO TUTORIAL FROM HERE AND ITS IN THE RIGHT TYPE! KK THX

There are at least two big problems with the current setup regarding the tutorial database.

One thing is that tutorials are hardly ever (never?) added or updated.
There is a lot of information missing, and a lot of things are just plain wrong.
It needs to be much easier to add new stuff, remove misinformation, and fix errors.
The "Map Making Wiki" would be a wonderful solution.

Also, often when people ask questions in MMA, they didn't even bother to check the tutorials, or they don't even know that the tutorials exist.
I think the tutorial search function should be much more obvious and accessible.
Perhaps when you click "New Topic" in MMA, insetad of going directly to the reply page, you first go to a page that's like:
"Did you search the tutorials to see if your question was already answered?" *Tutorial database search bar here*
Then if you're sure you've got an original problem, you can make a thread.

maybe that should be expanded upon a little. i think if we implemented a 'tag' system, we could search the topic title for these 'tag' keywords and bring up the appropiate tutorials.

Or just search the text of the tutorial.

A wiki of mapmaking. Imagine, if it's ever "completed", how amazing would that be? It'd be one of the best resources ever. Better than a massive heap of tutorials you have to shuffle through.

As many have pointed out, wikipedia has a way of being inaccurate. An online map-making wiki could become a mess of bad information.
