Correct me if I'm wrong, but dwarf planet contains the word planet, does it not? This means we still have Pluto as a planet. It's jsut a different KIND of planet. We now have dwarf planets, and non-dwarf planets. For the sake of being lazy people simply refer to non-dwarf planets as 'planets'. For the sake of me being lazier than scientists I will also refer to dwarf planets as 'planets' if you here me talking about a planet you can either assume I mean Pluto-Charon, Ceres or Xena and/or Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Urnaus or Neptune.

If you're as lazy as me, problem solved.

BANG

It is still a planet, they just changed the category so technically, the solar system still has 9 planets or 11 or 12 or something. 8 MAJOR planets = MVEMJSUN, 1 MINOR PLANET = PLUTO!!!

QUOTE(Doodan @ Aug 27 2006, 12:18 AM)
The wikipedia articles have already done it, and now, all new science literature printed about the planets will have to say there are only 8 planets (classic planets, as they're sometimes called now), and that Pluto and the other objects are dwarf planets.

You and your wikiality. Also, technically Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, and Neptune should be considered Dwarf Planets because they haven't cleared their orbits, yet.

QUOTE
A planet (from the Greek πλανήτης, planētēs which means "wanderer" or more forcefully "vagrant, tramp") is an object in orbit around a star that is not a star in its own right. Much like "continent," "planet" is a word without a precise definition, with history and culture playing as much of a role as geology and astrophysics
History and culture play a role. History. History says its a planet, the scientists who said this might as well say europe isn't a continent...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Syphon on 2006-08-28 at 10:25:29
Europe isn't a continent. It's politically distict, not geologically.

NOOOOOOOOOOO.

Pluto is more like a Moon, Not a planet.
But "Dwarf Planet" keyword Planet, So its still a Planet. Scientist just trying to feel special and make new textbooks to get alot of money.

after taking a few astronomy classes in college, i guess they taught us outdated info...and i'm wondering if they're going to throw and toss away all the old books or rip out the pages that mention pluto being a planet.

back on pluto, people being taught it being a planet would be used to it. and with this recent news, it might be hard for some people might see this as a huge change. but i won't care unless it effects us naturally in some way.

well pluto should be a planet...it still revolves around the sun doesnt it?that's what it means to be a planet(if i remember correctly) and it does have a moon that revolves around it.

it's wierd how they change things...first they call what they think an asteroid a planet, and call a big object like pluto's satellite a moon.

You should've paid more attention in these alleged classes.

Revovling around the sun has nothnig to do with being a planet. If that was true extrasolar planets wouldn't exist, also every one of the 10,000,000,000 or so asteroids would be a planet.

Pluto has 3 moons and technically only 2 of them orbit it. Pluto and Charon would be be classified as planets if Pluto were to be accepted, as they orbit each other. Nix and Hydra, the other moons, orbit Pluto directly.

I'm sorry but this was quite sad in my opinion. For freak's sake, why did a whole community of astronomists have to all get together and discuss something so useless and unproductive? Woohoo, who cares?? Seriously... it's just a clump of matter floating around the Sun. Will the fact that pluto is no longer a planet affect the way we live our lives now? Are we all going to die now?! Oh crap, we're probably going to make all the aliens living in Pluto furious now! Better brace ourselves for a largescale alien invasion! Honestly, what is this world coming to?

The definition of what is considered a "planet" was changed because hundreds of other entities that circled our solar system would also have to be considered planets. It probably is meaningless now (especially with the war going on) but at least we save our future kids from having to remember 200+ planet names in Astronomy class.

But once again that brings up the issue: Would you rather have 8 planets or 12+? I will miss Pluto being a planet, but I'd rather have a few than a ton to keep track of. Plus, it'll be hard to make a catchy jingle out of 2003 UB313.

It makes no sense. This reminds me of the time when France had a despute over the name "French Fries." Which America promptly renamed them to "Freedom Fries."

It's the same thing people... what's the point of calling pluto a "Dwarf Planet." It's still a planet... -_-. There will always be 9 planets. Grawr.
