WTF are you smoking and where can I get some? Just cus he passed an exam dose not mean that he is smart. You said that he had his mom read the book for him? That means that he is LAZY, not smart. His mother drilled him on the most important parts of the book, but he knows NOTHING about it. That kind of treatment is going to hurt the kid more than it would help them.
Once that kid gets to the "Real World" hes going to be freaked (sorry, it had to be said) cus he will not know what to do. He will have No work ethics what so ever.
He will end up working either fast food or trash man, because no one would hire a lazy bum like him.
Besides me he was the only kid in my grade to get a 100 percent on that exam. He is smart though I will admit too smart for his own good, but I think he is more spoiled than good.
If you reward a kid for something he should have done without being rewarded, he will only want more rewards for things he doesn't deserve.

Then just ground him or spank him and take away the money he gets for doing his work.
Kid's most of the time dont want to do it for respect out of the law (Or what moose said), They want to do it for that cookie, If they have something to motivate them then they will try.
I dont think it hurts there mental health.
So in an essence, kids are like dogs.
Aren't we all? We'd all be more likely to try harder when we know there's something in it for us, especially something immediate.
I say it comes down to expectations. Let's take the example of grades, because it seems to be a popular one. If the kid gets the grade you expect them to get, don't give them anything; I think we can all agree on that. If they do better than you expect, reward them because they deserve it for working hard. If they do worse, punish them.
But then we get into the discussion of "Is virtue its own reward?" I really couldn't say. I personally say that virtue is all well and good in its own right, but pride in your own virtue is dangerously close to smug self-righteousness. Vice, for me at least, is its own punishment, though: when I've done something wrong, I realize it and correct myself. I guess it all depends on the perosn.
