Hold on people, i have become a moderator through giving out information on an sql injection exploit on SEN, and not only that, i had requested to become a staff member for security on v5.
there arent many people who have decent skill in website security here.
or even a decent amount of experience for that matter.

Knowledge of coding does not win you respect among the community, nor does it give you any right to moderate.

Damn, we sure do
QUOTE(Red2Blue @ Dec 31 2006, 10:03 AM)
Hm... you all give good points, but SEN's v4 coding was "shotty" to say the least, finding a breakthrough in protection definitely deserves a merit, but not a position that he has not yet qualified himself for.

And so it does. But there is precedent in these situations, such as people finding serious bugs and quietly reporting them rather than exposing them, or intrepidly taking my password and stopping a hacker from wreaking havoc with my account. The former got one warn level decrease, the latter a couple thousand minerals.
Everything Killer_Kow(MM) said is very true and important, plus I think by right of his warn log (Staff can see this) he has proven himself to be lacking in maturity and general good grammar (he has spammed long pointless strings of periods and random characters or smileys multiple times and been warned for it). This has all been in the last three months or less.Well, I doubt IP will change his mind unless Pyro screws up sometime in the future. Let's just trust him for now, shall we?

omf god dtbk... he was just screwing around with the script...
O RLY?
I guess it's cool then. That was the only thing that had me concerned. People tend to become better once they have power anyway.
Just messing with the script? If you say so...
Since he did help out SEN, I would agree with him being able to maybe lower his warn level a little, or gain a bunch of minerals, or some other reward like that. But giving him power over forums and other members that are more "staff-worthy" people than he is, is something I can't agree with. Just take a glance at his warnlog to see why.
I don't believe Pyro-Fire is cut out to be a mod. His grammer is poor, and as KK pointed out, not active. He should be given a reward like Doodan stated, or recognized to the community as a helping member of SEN.
UMS Assistance mod? WTFage? Now you're just off your rocker, IP.
Are we even going to need help with security if/when we go to v5..?
I Second KK.
Personally I like Pyro-Fire, I don't "Don't care" or dislike him.
But I really think that a moderator should be someone able to answer questions if it's on an assistance forum. I don't know if Pyro is either a mapper or a modder, and that's my point. a moderator should be someone recognized by the community that he moderates, for example Voyager is by far one of the bet modders I've known and so is farty and Ez. Well, that's what I can talk about. I don't know if he is capable of moderationg UMS since I've lost track of UMS forums.

I'm trying to stay neutral here
What I feel now, is that we should put trust in IP. I'm sure that whatever he does will turn out for the better.
Yeah true. Whatever Happens I Support the Admins

Even though they are all in different positions on the matter...
If he helped with SECURITY, I would understand Computers & Technical. But, he gets Mapping Assistance for some reason? WTFage?
I see no connection between PHP/SQL knowledge and moderating ability. That's the biggest disconnect for me.
I think IP couldn't wait for new years eve to get slammed.
Well obviously IP has been keeping up moderately with this forum, IP has heard the people, IP most likely understood the people, and thus, if IP does not take initiative from our reaction, clearly IP has something bigger in mind. We just have to trust in IP to make the right decisions, IP's leadership as Admin hasn't failed us yet... why should it now?

Agreed. IP wouldn't do anything that wasn't for the better of the site.
Generally agreed, but also remember how rarely he visits SENv4 compared to the other administrators.. At the very least, he should have discussed it with the other administrators. I cannot see how putting Pyro-Fire into an undeserved position of power can be good for SEN.
woah hold on people, IP asked me to choose 3 sections to be trialed on moderation. i had chose modding assistance because i have some decent skills in modding and that of which many people lack. i chose UMS mapping assistance because i also have some skill in UMS that other people lack. and i chose misc because it is a quite active forum in which i can learn to pick the junk from the topics.
also, i used to be a very active member. now i can only come on about 5 hrs a day because of my restriced internet access.
Oh yeah hey wow, he got power over three forums. Some of the more respected sen members only got one. Interesting. Just what are you planning IP?

So you believe going against two other moderators and the community's wishes, and giving a nobody(No offense) on SEN moderation power for helping out in something totally unrelated to what he helped with is for the better of the site? I don't see it. I'm sure he could be a good moderator.. but so can 920920921 other people... they just need to earn that status.. Do we even need more moderators?
There are 3 admins... why doesn't one of them show off their power...
I mean generally IP, when the whole community and the two other admins don't want you to do something, it's for a reason.
okay lets think about this for a minute.
if im not going to help out with sen's security.. who is? i mean, why doesnt ip just undo the changes he made because of me and let some "nobody" criplle sen's database.
and furthermore i could have taken sen down months ago... i just didnt have the knowledge to exploit it correctly.
if i did have the right knowledge, sen probably wouldnt be here today. even with all the backups.
so if someone else with the right knowledge were to get really pissed off with sen or ever want to hack sen... well, yeh. you can pretty much guess whats going to happen.
When v4 is gone, and we move onto v5, whos gunna help out then? i mean, the admins can be pretty good at coding for sen, but they aint perfect. whos going to find problems that can become a real security threat in the end? me. who else? well, i'd just love to hear someone who can hack into a starcraft hacking site (yes i have done that) that comes from SEN.

The same could be said of everyone.
Dude, I don't think anyone is questioning your ability to help with the security of SEN, but the fact you were made mod out of thin air for it brings up some questions. Because knowledge of how to stop hackers is not the same as how to moderate a forum.

You DO realise that you aren't the only member that has knowledge about network security, right?
i asked to become a staff member so i could help out with the more scripting of sen. such as fixing exploits and errors and the like. aswell as coding add-ons
the chain of trust must start somewhere.
@syphon:
plz name someone.
oh and i didnt say network security. i said website security.
