I really like how fast development in this field is going along. I for one want to be around as long as possible, I hope i could one day be a candidate for this.

Exactly, this looks enticing, but the repurcussions of it outwiegh the benifits, people just wouldn't be "natural". Don't know how else to say it...

And the statement that people alive will live to 1000 is rediculous, scientists always put up optimistic dates about when new sciences will affect society, and for the most part they were wrong. Electricity was just starting to be harnessed in the 1800's, and it took until recently for it to be widespread.

100 is a more realistic number

I think that everyone is right in one way. Sure maybe the first 100 years that we get this technology we might get screwed, but if some super genuis comes along like Einstein, and this time he does live 1000 years, We will be able to do a lot. You just got to look at the factors of it all. Yes I would like to live 1000 years also, but if I had AIDS I would like to live to atleast 40! What i'm trying to say is I think that this technology should not be released in our lifetime (that is if they can get it working), but they should work on curing AIDS first...

P.S, I only read first 15 post because I saw that you guys wrote a lot, and i'm to lazy to read it all tongue.gif

LOL! Omg. As if people are so 'natural' now. Lookie... breast implants, plastic surgery, etc... etc... AND etc! It's sickening. This wouldn't make us as unnatural as society already is.

Um... don't get aids then... duh. It's that simple. You know why we'll never cure aids? Because the government doesn't care. Who gets aids the most? Gays and druggies. Who cares about them? I'm sure they already have a cure for aids, they just don't bother releasing it. If bill gates got aids, he'd be healed with a 'miracle' and everyone would just be so clueless. I believe real stories such as already happened.

You really shouldn't bother responding to a topic unless you read where the conversation is going. You'd been better off reading the last 15 posts rather than the first 15. But, I know you don't care because all you want are the mineralz. Your post barely even makes sense... "they shouldn't release it in our lifetime"... wtf? Why?

I think living to 1000 would only work in a very utopian society, because there is too many problems we already have now. Also maybe we are supposed to die, like maybe there is something beyond like an afterlife

You're absolutly right !! But then.... what the heck are we going to do about it huh ?! March on the streets and shoot things like 'Stop aids !!' or something ? naah that never worked before.... We could also kill the presedent, but then someone else will be presedent and then he will see a movie from the murder of Kennedy from a view we never saw.... so he's also screwded up and has no choice but to make stupid speeches and stuff....
Etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.

etc.

But anyways, I don't like to live a 1000 years on earth, much to pain for me here. I wouldn't care to fall death right now and finally live a life (without censored.gif ed up censored.gif ) in heaven....

Just a thought, why are there so many people going on about the mass amount of homeless people this will create? I mean, wouldn't the homeless people die off at a "normal" age because they wouldn't be getting any treatment?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by BeeR_KeG on 2004-12-13 at 19:15:57
Thats the esence of our society we have to deal with every day problems and thats what makes every day different.
If we lived in utopian society then it owuld be boring since there would be nothing to do because everything is perfect.

Lol, that is so true... It'll almost be like natural selection based on fianicial well being.

Way to use up character space.

Anyways, about living to 1000 years, like I said before life would suck. With people living to 1000 years we would have to exapand to a new planet. One of the closest and livible planets (in some aspects) is Mars. However, it takes about 6 months just to go there. Then to come back and get supplies, another 6 months. It would be too long of a journey. Not a very good thing. Anyways our population is ever growing...

I agree with this. It sounds from the article it is soem way to repair cell division error by correcting the corrupted genes in peoples DNA. That would take a lot of money to figure out what has to be fixed, then fake strands must be made and injected into the person. Because of the way people age, you'd need a new dose of an updated treatment about every 40 years. Who can pay for all that, it'd be made very expensive.

About overpopualtion, yes old people wouldn't be having kids, but the old wouldn't die. 16 people die every second (about). If that was reduced to two, the population would always be added to, but no subtractions would take place (barely any). That is why population would be an issue.

Exactly. There is barely any usable oxygen on Mars, and all awter would be in scattered aquifers. You would have tiny tent towns supporting about a quarter million at most. Say you could have about 50 of these (a very optimistic estimate). You get 12.5 million people. That's not much compared to the world population. Expanding to otehr planets would be really really hard. The next closest star is 4 light years away. it took about 30 years to reach the edge of our Solar System, about 6 light hours. Now we could go faster, say twice as fast. So, to reach the next nearest star would take 6x4x365x4 years or hours (I am assuming yeears, I'm too lazy to check). Messages would take 4 years to travel from one planet to another. You can't set up mass colonies if it took 20 generations for a ship to reach a planet if they could live 1000 years. This treatment would kill us all eventually unless we were able to make a very fast starship drive capable of reaching at least 10% the spedd of light. it'd only then take 40 years to reach the nearest star. Even that is a very long time.

" take it none of you guys saw the show on the discovery channel, i think it was called, black sky: the reach for space.
in that show, they made a COMMERICAL space jet that REACHED space. now, they're disinging a new one to carry passengers. all they have to do is make a ton of those, esatablish a space station for it to dock at, then people can board a slightly bigger ship to take them to the moon. then, we can establish colonies on the moon!

ADDITION: but living to 1,000 would be awsome... and to think... im only 12, so when i can do it il be 32 when it happens. the perfect age. (i think)

ADDITION: OOO or OROROROROR i just thought of tis. they could use the MOON to grow tons of crops! they could use the side of the moon that faces the sun to grow crops insanely fast, because it has 24/7 sunlight. and then when the moon goes behing the earth, it could be like harvesting season!"

A: It costs insanely large amounts of money to go into space...
B: Merely because we can get PEOPLE to the Moon doesn't mean we ahve the technology to make it inhabitable.
C: Compared to Earth, the moon is TINY...
D: The side always facing the sun? I thought that the side of the moon facing the Sun changed every day, or every few hours, or few days, or whatever...
E: Wouldn't the constant sunlight be bad for the plants?

Also, chances are, you would get bored a lot, even if you do know how to live a good life.
Besides, what's wrong with dying anyways?
Personally, I like the idea of dieing; it'll allow me to finally find out what happens, if anything, after death!
The only reason I might want to live 1000 years is to see if any particular accomplishment or idea I make has any noticable change on civilization.

Yeah, about the crops on the moon, the moon's crops would die of radiation so fast.... It wouldn't have that much space to put crops, and it would be so expensive to transport them back to Earth. Better to preserve fields on Earth.

i dont think that that'll help us any. Somewhere along the way, most probably before we are 1000 years old, destiny will end our lives off the curb and in front of a bus
