QUOTE
'We will be able to live to 1,000'
By Dr Aubrey de Grey
University of Cambridge

Life expectancy is increasing in the developed world. But Cambridge University geneticist Aubrey de Grey believes it will soon extend dramatically to 1,000. Here, he explains why.

Ageing is a physical phenomenon happening to our bodies, so at some point in the future, as medicine becomes more and more powerful, we will inevitably be able to address ageing just as effectively as we address many diseases today.

I claim that we are close to that point because of the SENS (Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence) project to prevent and cure ageing.

It is not just an idea: it's a very detailed plan to repair all the types of molecular and cellular damage that happen to us over time.

And each method to do this is either already working in a preliminary form (in clinical trials) or is based on technologies that already exist and just need to be combined.

This means that all parts of the project should be fully working in mice within just 10 years and we might take only another 10 years to get them all working in humans.

When we get these therapies, we will no longer all get frail and decrepit and dependent as we get older, and eventually succumb to the innumerable ghastly progressive diseases of old age.

We will still die, of course - from crossing the road carelessly, being bitten by snakes, catching a new flu variant etcetera - but not in the drawn-out way in which most of us die at present.

So, will this happen in time for some people alive today? Probably. Since these therapies repair accumulated damage, they are applicable to people in middle age or older who have a fair amount of that damage.

I think the first person to live to 1,000 might be 60 already.

It is very complicated, because ageing is. There are seven major types of molecular and cellular damage that eventually become bad for us - including cells being lost without replacement and mutations in our chromosomes.

Each of these things is potentially fixable by technology that either already exists or is in active development.

'Youthful not frail'

The length of life will be much more variable than now, when most people die at a narrow range of ages (65 to 90 or so), because people won't be getting frailer as time passes.

The average age will be in the region of a few thousand years. These numbers are guesses, of course, but they're guided by the rate at which the young die these days.

If you are a reasonably risk-aware teenager today in an affluent, non-violent neighbourhood, you have a risk of dying in the next year of well under one in 1,000, which means that if you stayed that way forever you would have a 50/50 chance of living to over 1,000.

And remember, none of that time would be lived in frailty and debility and dependence - you would be youthful, both physically and mentally, right up to the day you mis-time the speed of that oncoming lorry.

Should we cure ageing?

Curing ageing will change society in innumerable ways. Some people are so scared of this that they think we should accept ageing as it is.

I think that is diabolical - it says we should deny people the right to life.

The right to choose to live or to die is the most fundamental right there is; conversely, the duty to give others that opportunity to the best of our ability is the most fundamental duty there is.

There is no difference between saving lives and extending lives, because in both cases we are giving people the chance of more life. To say that we shouldn't cure ageing is ageism, saying that old people are unworthy of medical care.

Playing God?

People also say we will get terribly bored but I say we will have the resources to improve everyone's ability to get the most out of life.

People with a good education and the time to use it never get bored today and can't imagine ever running out of new things they'd like to do.

And finally some people are worried that it would mean playing God and going against nature. But it's unnatural for us to accept the world as we find it.

Ever since we invented fire and the wheel, we've been demonstrating both our ability and our inherent desire to fix things that we don't like about ourselves and our environment.

We would be going against that most fundamental aspect of what it is to be human if we decided that something so horrible as everyone getting frail and decrepit and dependent was something we should live with forever.

If changing our world is playing God, it is just one more way in which God made us in His image.

Aubrey de Grey leads the SENS project at Cambridge University and also runs the Methuselah Mouse prize for extending age in mice.

I really like how fast development in this field is going along. I for one want to be around as long as possible, I hope i could one day be a candidate for this.

Nice.
I'll get to live 1000 years!!!!!

Although it will definetly be expensive at first people will just make a big ass mortgage and pay up since they have so much time to live/work and pay up.

The economy will BOOM upwards like a rocket since there will be much more jobs and employess.

There will be much more scientific advancements since there is more people to make them.

There will be much more food even though there world will suddenly overpopulate there will be much mor inventors of healthy synthetic food(future food like once a day pills).

I say this is one of the best advancements in chemical biology after the discovery of DNA.

thats horrible.....very horrible....think about it.....if this happens we would overpopulate the world. Its like deer....they are everywhere! Or would they kill off the poor and weak people to make room for the new comers? how inhumane would that be....also...1,000 years....our resources would run out so quickly it wouldnt even be funny. Very bad idea......maybe to 100 years at max....but 1,000 is overdoing it.

ADDITION: I sent this in before i saw beer_kegs post.

Beer_Keg we wouldnt come up with that "1 day a pill" technology quickly....wed overpopulate the world and run out of our resources before they come up with that stuff...and can u imagine....what if new diseases came out and spread like wildfire....or can u imagine how many homeless there would be? Also how many wars?! Its still our human nature to fight each other for what belongs to us and people would start getting into other people's property and the world would be at war again.....wed simply run out of space and food....unless we gave animals this technology......and then wed just ruin the circle of life....things are supposed to die or the planet cant reproduce plants which animals feed upon....and we feed upon these animals and plants...

Thats the beauty of it Snipa.

We overpopulate the world and we move on and make lots of colonies during the same time span.

Everything will chaneg since there will be much more technological advancements and then we would be able to create worm holes since humans will be all around the sector and then the laws of psysics will change meaning no more overpopulation.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by SnIpA(MC) on 2004-12-04 at 17:11:22
....ur not thinking logically.....that would NOT happen the instance these anti-aging technologies came in...we would still have the same birth rates.....even worse! its not beautiful to find new colonies......thats some movie that u wish to see....if that happened in real life, our species would become parasites feeding off of worlds untill we ran out of them to steal resources from
Report, edit, etc...Posted by CheeZe on 2004-12-04 at 17:19:25
This is a bad thing. Our technology simply cannot handle the amount of people if it happens. Our technology can't even support what we have now!

More jobs? That is impossible if we have more people, and the economy can only decline from there. More people does not mean more brains, it means more stomachs to fill.

NOTE: SnIpA(MC), if anything, please type in paragraph form so it's easier to read. :/

I'd like to live for 1,000 years... just think of what computers would be like in 100 years... and playing Starcraft IV on one.

However, for some reason, I doubt this is a reality. We supposedly can't cure aids but are finding ways to live for 1,000 years? The world would become totally chaotic.

Over population probably wouldn't be too much of a problem though. Females are born with X amount of eggs for fertilization. If people are still having babies after 70 years old, it wouldn't be something natural.

I doubt this would just be administrated to everyone...

Vote President Bush for 2104! ;/
Report, edit, etc...Posted by NeoNightmareX on 2004-12-04 at 17:26:19
so....how long is this lifespan? lol but seriously that would be uber, but then the whole world would be overpopulated, TO MARS!!!!! and IP, it wouldn't be SC IV, it would be SC II, biggrin.gif
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Helios on 2004-12-04 at 17:42:28
Overpopulation this, Overpopulation that blah. How much longer do you think it will be before humanity starts reaching out and setting up colonies on/around every planet or moon in our solar system. In 50 years there will be cities on the moon, not long after that other settlements will pop up.

Overpopulation is only a problem if you think we will be on earth exclusively for another 100 years.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by NeoNightmareX on 2004-12-04 at 18:13:16
i blame the unprotected parents of 3rd world countries who have like 18 children for overpopulation, and that is why i said "TO MARS!!!!!", because we will go to other planets and populated them
Report, edit, etc...Posted by EzDay281 on 2004-12-04 at 18:35:27
The first thing I thought when I read it, is exactly what Snipa said...
and Beerkeg, what you're saying is completely stupid and illogical.
A) you are being sarcastic
B) your account is hacked
C) you're an idiot and I never knew it...

Just because we live longer doesn't mean our technology will boom.
Living to 1000 means that more humans will be alive, causing LESS jobs to be available...
We're still PLENTY way off from inhabiting other planets.

Although I agree with that A) if we ARE playing God, then that's just part of what God made us to be, and B) there is no such thing as playing God if you don't call what we aready HAVE playing God(who's to say that Humans get to control whether other species live or die?)...
but...
"There is no difference between saving lives and extending lives, because in both cases we are giving people the chance of more life. To say that we shouldn't cure ageing is ageism, saying that old people are unworthy of medical care."

By curing aging, we would cause a large number more homeless, hungy, and jobless. Also, it would provide negative effects on the economy, and humans are already noticably screwed. So by doing this, we may be extending, ahem, saving the lives of the old, but we are also killing off all those that would have been born had Humans lived a few more decades, centuries, possibly MILLENIA.

Scientists takes years to make a single theory/invention.

Imagine that instead of 3 inventions/theory's per each scientis' life you will get 100.

Technology will BOOM quite fast. Imagine if Albert Einstein was still here. All them advancements that he would've made.
Longer lifes = more productive, you can learn more and do stuff better.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by EzDay281 on 2004-12-04 at 19:56:31
Okay, so someone will make more discoveries and crap.
But that's only because he has more time to do them.
Only in the case of a 'genius' such as Einstein does it really make a large difference.

Think of it this way:
If people made maps at a speed of 1% per day, and each person has 500 days to make maps before they expire, and with this, they have 5000 days, does it really make a difference?
Sure, it means that there'll be more mappers, but it also means that each mapper will get lower quality computers, slowing down their work on mapping, and whenever a map comes out, though it helps the civilization, it's not enough to make up for the lack of fun being lost from too many people playing.

Err... did that even make sense?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by KrAzY on 2004-12-05 at 10:38:54
It's a bad idea but I still wanna live forever, so I'm about like both sides
Report, edit, etc...Posted by SnIpA(MC) on 2004-12-05 at 11:00:56
Made plenty of sense to me...within the first say 200 years of this....we would probably have an armaggedon or something...people are already fighting over land, food, water, and oil. That IS suicide! More people DOES NOT mean more technology.....if u see it that way explain to me why there are millions of homeless people around the world or starving children and we cant censored.gif ing fix the space station?! They said wed colonize mars 50 years ago...has it happened? No. We are VERY FAR from it. We arent even at the apex of human civilization yet. Our lives seem technologically advanced now but so did the lives of the egyptians....I think the scientists who want this to happen need to be shot! They just arent thinking about how this would affect the rest of the world. Imagine these scenarios:

A. Adolf Hitler escaped and returned 500 years after WW2
B. Jack The Ripper (who has never been identified) returns to his murder sprees.
C. More people to kill.....Are you not aware of the genocide that is taking place in africa? In 1994 a million people were killed in one country by it's government (forgot the country)
D. People like Yassir Arafat or Castro wouldnt die of old age and the world would have to deal with those people.
E. Too many guts to fill.....we cant feed people now how are we going to feed them over 1,000 years. Even with your "1 day pill" we would still need resources to make these pills and we would run out. Like I said earlier, THINGS ARE MEANT TO DIE. THAT IS THE CIRCL E OF LIFE! WE CANNOT MESS WITH THIS OR IT IS THE END OFF ALL LIFE AS WE KNOW IT.
F. More crime because of less jobs.
G. More corrupted governments (u know wut im talking about)
H. The destruction of ALL organized religion. You may not believe in god but to some people, they need God or life has no meaning.
I. WE WILL NOT COLONIZE MARS WITHIN THE NEXT 50 years....I'd be surprised if we landed on it within the next 25.
J. Do you know how much money and resources would need to be put into these colonies and space stations? Billions would starve if we rushed to do things like this.
K. Wut is our birth rate everyday? You cant begin to imagine. Can you say atleast half a million people are born every day and atleast half a million die? Imagine if only 250,000 people die since the other half didnt die from old age. Then the birth rate went up because there are more people to reproduce. Hmm let see....I estimate about a million births.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by BeeR_KeG on 2004-12-05 at 11:45:46
As it was said before women are born with a specific number of eggs in their ovaries. Each month they release one, they will eventually run out. Birth rates will be the same.

You spoke of all bad people but heres some good things that have been done.

1) Hitler - He revolutionized the way wars would be fought, got the world out of the depresion, is the man responsible for financing the greatest amount of technological advancements. Yes I'm half-german so I believe Hitler is great man.
2) Einstein - I already stated this
3) Castro - Its because of him that cubans have a much better education and hostpitals than ever before. I know lots of Cubans and they've told me this. It's because of US that cuba is in that situation.
4) Colonization - Ion engines already exist, Nuclear Fusion is about to be controled(~10 years), Space travel is now available for civilians. Space travel is becoming much much cheaper.
5) Religion - I believe that Catholicism is the main reason people hate religion or they've become atheist. The INquisition, Joint Church and state is what has damageg Europe from the fall of the roman empire until the 19th century when separation of church and state started.
6) Puerto Rico has one of the biggest corrupt goverments in the world unlike US - If you find someone that isn't corrupt people will keep voting for them because of that which means less corrupt goverments.
7) more crime because of less jobs? There will be much more employers and employees. The service industry will need way more employees since they have to service more people. Industry will also need mroe employees because they need to produce more goods.

i take it none of you guys saw the show on the discovery channel, i think it was called, black sky: the reach for space.
in that show, they made a COMMERICAL space jet that REACHED space. now, they're disinging a new one to carry passengers. all they have to do is make a ton of those, esatablish a space station for it to dock at, then people can board a slightly bigger ship to take them to the moon. then, we can establish colonies on the moon!

ADDITION: but living to 1,000 would be awsome... and to think... im only 12, so when i can do it il be 32 when it happens. the perfect age. (i think)

ADDITION: OOO or OROROROROR i just thought of tis. they could use the MOON to grow tons of crops! they could use the side of the moon that faces the sun to grow crops insanely fast, because it has 24/7 sunlight. and then when the moon goes behing the earth, it could be like harvesting season!

Well...
To live to 1000 could have its pros/cons. And we are already overpopulating the world. If you lived to 1000, however you could run the possibility of gettin Alhtiemer's dieses... and if you got that early on.. that'd be a long time to live until your brain finally gave out... Anyways, I don't know to live to one thousand would be scary... And the people that didn't get to live that old was your friend and died? You'd go thro like 40 friends... Thats too much for some to bear...

You really can't have your cake and eat it too...

If people could live to 1000 I would personally only want myself and those close to me (and of course SEN) to also live to 1000. Otherwise the world would just get to over-populated. Of course no one would allow just a select few to live to 1000, so I suspect that this will just be one of the other many ways humanity is going to kill itself.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by VoidArchon(MC) on 2004-12-05 at 17:38:54
Humanity was killing themselves ever since the starting of mankind wink.gif
Still it'd be crazy, 618 year old man hitting on a 17 year old girl... like whoa.
And i wonder how'd you look, at the age of 500 or something... Teenagers shaving 20 ft. beards, cutting eye brows like destroying a forest! Looking beyond dead would be freaky...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by KaboomHahahein on 2004-12-05 at 17:54:58
Heheh SENS!

Anyways, I don't think anyone would want to live to be 1000 years because life will be SO damn boring. Think about it, living for so long life would get annoying. Then there will be a lot of suiciding.

Do you guys know how much it costs to send 1 shuttle into space (orbit above earth) for 1 week? Think of how much it would cost for us to send thousands of people in hundreds of shuttles to mars? And mars is not as big as earth and far less hospitable, you would probably want to live in antartica instead. We would run into the same problem in another 100 years. BTW Ion engines are not great they take a very long time to build up speed although once they get going they can go pretty fast.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by illusion(SS) on 2004-12-07 at 19:55:55
uhh first of all, they'll still be around the same age and looks, all that will happen is the aging prosses gets streched out. and wtf is with the long bread crap? they'll still shave every day.. wtf?

I don't know, with 1000 years, you SHOULD be able to get rich... and not get bored. But yeah... working for X amount of years would suck.

But think of all the games you would get to play! and um... other fun things wink.gif.
