Staredit Network -> Serious Discussion -> Single Player vs Multiplayer

Multiplayer games are definitely the spice that keeps Starcraft alive year after year. Without it, this game would have surely been long dead.

This is not to say that singleplayer is without merit. For numerous reasons, not everyone can find someone to play with. This might mean there is simply no internet access or nobody to ocuppy the other seat/s of your LAN.

Yes, Starcraft's single player is very weak and soon mastered. Great UMS's however make up for this. I would think/hope that a majority of the visitors of an "Editing" site would champion this opinion also. Much can be done to spice up the Ai, but unfortunately we are talking about a program that is in essence less than 1 megabyte. Sure Deep Blue can outwit Gary Kasparov, but starcraft.exe is NOT Deep Blue.

A few of us Ai enthusiasts have attempted to develop a stronger Ai. Using SCAIEdit III we have managed to improve the single player experience and welcome you to experience this. I am in the infant stages of a project that will showcase various Ai's. This is also a challenge to anyone interested in participating in this Singleplayer revolution. Look a little deeper and I am sure you will find stimulating singleplayer material out there. Otherwise sites like this are doomed.

I agree it spices up Starcraft online. If we didn't have online playing we would become lonely lol.

multiplayer i think is better because you can vs real people and stuff but you need single play to learn how to play the game first XD its just like idk but multiplayer makes it funs oh no wait ithink its because you can talk to UNKNOWN players and talk trash

i say single player should be played first. the people that dont play it and only go to sp are really rude. i say it cuz the people who made the game worked really hard on the game. spending indless hours working on the lvls.

the game makers should make it so u neeed to be sp to play mp shifty.gif

My belief: If you want to play something single-player, visit a little place called the 1990's and buy the "Golden Age" system--the Super Nintendo.

I usually don't give a crap about video quality--but, for its time, the Super Nintendo was the greatest videogame platform EVER! It introduced polygonal 3D graphics (StarFox) and was extremely real-looking with specific 2D graphics (I'm thinking of the sensational game Mega Man X [1993]). That game scores a 10/10 according to me as far as replayability goes.

In today's terms, I like a nice, long single-player mode which I can play again once I'm finished with it (In this case, I direct you to Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II [1997] or maybe Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast [2002]).

like the multiplayer because u can compete other people to see ur skills of playing the game and others.

Oh yes. I forgot multiplayer.

What I'm looking for in multiplayer is a variety of game modes and maps (such as the sheer number of maps and modes that Epic crammed into Unreal Tournament 2k4).

I'm also looking for something new: I don't want to play Deathmatch all the time. I'd much prefer to play something like Capture the Flag or King of the Hill.

In RTS multiplayer, I want up to 8-12 human players available. Maybe 16 for the upcoming games (such as the somewhat-shadily-reported StarCraft II). I want the basic Melee mode, as well as maybe a couple team modes and, as a matter of course, Use Map Settings.

As far as whihc is more important depends on the game... some games you buy specificly for the fact that they have great multiplayer aspects, such as halo 2, counterstrike, and half-life2. Also STarcraft, these games you buy becuae you want to play against someone with human abilities/ intellegence. then agin some games you go into buying becuase you know that it has kick ass single player. one such game would be morrowind, or katamari damashi. when you buy these games your expecting them to have great single player, so you dont really care what type of gameplay the multiplaye has. I think if your gonna have both in a game, the devloper needs to decide whihc type of game they are developing. If they are lookign for an epic they will consantrate highly on both aspects of the game to give the player a complete game play experience. But sometiems they will decide to make a game with more of a slant one way or another... so as to which is better, i would say neither, both are intracle parts of the gameing world... you just have to choose your games to fit your prefrence of single player or multiplayer.

Co-Op can be integrated into StarCraft scenarios, so why worry?
