Years ago, single player games were the trend. Games were judged on how the AI reacted and the overall effect given to the player.
Fast forward to late 2004 and we see games that lack single player substance and many that thrive on multiplayer alone. What has happened to computer and player interaction?
We look at games such as Counter-strike, Halo 2, and WoW. These games are very popular because of the multiplayer factor.
Personally, I'm saddened to see that developers these days mainly focus on the multiplayer aspect. It's also disheartening that games which I considered "half-baked" such as Halo 2 top extraordinary achievements in AI such as Ninja Gaiden just because of the fact that you can play with others.
It's great that multiplayer brings people together, but it seems like developers today are saying, "Yea, we can have a poopy single player... but as long as we keep the multiplay fun, we can save time and money!".
You don't seem to realize that what keeps a game alive is his multiplayer aspect, most of the time (well, at least that's what Xbox and PS2 thinks...).
Nintendo got that a while ago (explains the lack of an Internet connection).
Single player keeps the game going i think, You cant have the Huge Data bas eof campigans on the internet. You cant have as big maps or Files as in single player. Internet is slowly dieing, with all the hackers, Map stealers. So on so forth.
I think i mis understood this topic a little. Oh well my narrow understanding.
The Gamecube can connect to the internet and the DS will soon be able to connect to the internet.
Multiplayer is better but you need a balance of both.
Once you finish the singleplayer you go try it in a harder dificulty and just go away because you got bored of the same thing over and over again.
Now multiplayer you interact with people and it will always be different becasue all humans will always act differently.
Well, imo all points should go for multiplayer importance.
Why?
Singal player is fun and all, but you have to admit it, it gets boring after some time - as soon as you beat the SP you have no point of keep playing it, and you leave the game in some hole in a box...
in Multi-player, you're never the best, even if you get better there are other people that keep getting better every day, unlike an AI, and thus why you play the game again and again... till version 2 comes out.
without multiplayer games will be like a movie - once you saw it you don't need it anymore.
That's the problem with today's one player games. They aren't innovative enough. They should make you WANT to play them over and over again. Programmers need to put more effort into the single player, making it fun, and REPLAYABLE!
Multiplayer now is the main focus, at least that's what I think.
Well, I personally prefer to play multiplayer. In single-player, its just not realistic enough. It can NEVER be. In multiplayer, there are real people. They talk to you, they do things, they even teamkill you (stupid noobs). I play singleplayer just to figure out how the game works, and then I never touch the SP again.
And yes, developers can save money AND make a fun game by cutting singleplayer. Poopy singleplayer and fun multiplayer is a fun game, right? I mean, look at starcraft. How much singleplayer do you play? How much multiplayer do you play? Probably more of the latter.
Until an AI is made that will accurately simulate humanlike actions... well multiplayer uses the best AI, humans. It's just said that a game can be trashed and if it has a decent multiplayer, it'll get sold. I commend Blizzard for making awesome games that are usually played on bnet, but they still give a lot into their single player modes.
Revelade, any AI can simulate humanlike actions. No AI will ever be able to simulate humanlike REactions, which is why multiplayer has infinitely more replayabillity than singleplayer.
I don't know if I'm off topic by saying this, but I feel that MutliPlayer games are much more fun. I find it very entertaining to be able to play a video game with a friend.
Uhhh obviously multiplayer unless you have a piece of

connection.
Personally, I prefer single player over multi player cause the computer never says anything, unless it's multi player like co-op games then I like co-op better. Games were a lot more fun back then because they couldn't make online games and had little graphic options so they HAD to work on making the game fun so that you could play it over and over again. And so that once the ghosts eat all of your pac-men, you gotta pop another quarter in to play at the arcade again!

i prefer multiplayer, single player gets really boring after you beat the whole campaign/missions/quest/whatever. multiplayer gives you a challenge. theres always new things. thus, you're always challenged, and multiplayer allows you to play with your friends which makes a game more fun.
Single Player:
• Mods
• More triggers
• Extremely limited gameplay
Multi Player:
• New concepts, sharing ideas
• Unlimited gameplay
• Play against real people
• Download others' creations'(maps)
The great thing about SEN is you can dl other peoples maps, even if they are Single Player. Other than that, I only use Single Player to play peoples' mods (like DK said), and to test maps. You need SP to learn the game and get interested in it, but after a certain point, it's the mmultiplyer that kepps you there. Both should be strong, otherwise the gaem can flop. =\
I use SinglePlayer for adjusting to controls and gameplay, when my connection's down, and storyline.
I use multiplayer for mods, map testing, playnig, and just about everything else.
"Singleplayer:
•Mods"
Actualy, Mods can be just as MultiPlayer as without.
Hell, I play on Mods with my friends all the time, and am even making one.
But I don't often get the chance to play with someone I send a mod to, so I just play Single Player for it.0
I'm just curious?, how many times have people played through teh campaigns here? I did it 3 times, once on my moms comp, once on my dads comp, and once on my laptop. Other than that, I dont play missions in a game mroe than once, unless I really liked the single player.
Well, Single Player is really the main concept of Starcraft, i guess, but, Multiplayer invovles gaming with your friends and making new ones; a more social type of environment, you know? Especially getting a taste of all the different kinds of maps you could make! Like, Jesus, who thought of bounds? It's so simple! But BRILLIANT! They have even inspired the ideas of official video game making companies, a lot of those... "Everyone" rated games i see now have like, patrolling men and explosions and stuff you cant touch..(fire)... to form obstacles with switches and, God knows what else. In conclusion, SC: Multiplayer is a much more inspirational experience.
And sites like SEN keep people informed, so there's always something new. Hopefully SC never dies. woohoo!

Single player is what makes the game what is it. Mutliplayer expands on that and keeps the game alive longer. Oh and just because a system doesn't have online capabilities, doesn't mean it knows multiplayer is really important. Thats just stupid. Ya, you can have friends over...but what if all of your friends are out of town...damn sucks for you cuz you have to play alone now. Pft...no online...so stupid.
But you can play with anyone. I only play with a few of the same people on SC, some of them I don't anymore. I have about 5 I play with regurlarly right now (If I can get on), but if none of them are on, I play with strangers, the great thing about multiplayer is you can meet new people (unless its a non-online console game, then your screwed).
What about the Metroid games? Aren't those basically single player? They've done quite well without miltiplayer internet games.
With Starcraft, you need a mix of single and multiplayer. Playing single player maps can help advance your skills. Playing multiplayer maps lets you see other people's strategies, and tactics. If you only played single player for your whole life, then one day played a game on Battle.net, you'd be totally out of it. If you spent your whole life playing multiplayer games, then one day played a single player, you probably wouldn't have the skills to beat the computer after all that time relying on others to bail you out when you're in trouble. BUT if you play a mix of 1v1 multiplayer maps, and other multimaps you can have a better chance of fending on your own in a single player campaign.
My 2 cents for today.
If you want a good example of the importance of single player... try Resident Evil 4.
I admire great single player games because they are harder to develop the A.I. than giving another human player some tools.
Well, nowadays most games are multiplayer. Why? Beacuse the AI is just different from playing against other humans.
It basicly depends on what type of game it is. Fable, if it was multiplayer would be a bit weird to have. It will be like runescape (horrible game in my oppinon) except minus all the mature things. Other games like starcraft will need multiplayer. If there is not, starcraft would be dead long ago.
To sum it all up. It depends.
