hey here is an idea for the filters and such. If people really see the words, make it available in the shop. That way some people that really want it can buy it for like 60 minerals and if the people who dont care leave it alone wink.gif. Its an idea wink.gif

That goes right back to what IP said ealier, it is basicly the same thing.

I've suggested the ability to see swear words way before I became an admin... it's not possible in senv4.  However, in senv5, I'm attempting to make it as optimized as possible to save bandwidth and be less server intensive.  A big preg_replace statement in post display would certainly kill script execution time.

As with the optimization of senv5, currently, if the server is lagged, senv4 almost refuses to load.  Senv5 loads almost perfectly with the lag.  I'd like to continue down that path, even though that type of option would be nice.

When swearing interrupts real words and stops smilies, it has gone too far.

It is ridiculous that you can't have a simple anthropologic discussion, because words like Homo Sapiens are censored.

( censored.gif  Sapiens)

Dear god, you've never said that before, and you can say "human beings" and you know it. You're complaining about things you shouldn't care about, all because, you CAN complain.

Yoshi, here's a simplish equation...
IF Repuation / 2 = Swear Count THEN censor words.
Whatcha think?

Actually, better idea. We could prehaps have swear words that are considered minor and some considered major. When you are past a certain post count, you are able to bypass censoring for x posts, and it resets weekly?

Lets say, 2 posts, or everything gets censored, and if you make it to 20, your post will refuse to be posted, telling you to remove bad language.

I'm starting to understand why Yoshi did this, kids may be reading this and if their parents walk in and see something like:

Someone: Well this topic is pointless.
Someone Else: Well censored.gif you to.

Then we just got a member in trouble! If anything (what I do) is leave the filters alone and if my member swears I edit the post and warn him. If he continues then just warn raise/suspension/ban.

How so? Unless you can convince me otherwise that you people absolutely have to swear, it stays.

Four letter D word for what beavers build.
Four letter H word for the opposet of heaven.
Four letter S word for poop
Four letter P word for Urine
The female word for a dog is in the forum description for the Staff Lounge.

somewords are takeing it too far. Also the Three letter A word for the butt is part of the spelling of many other words.

Edit: The words won't highlight in the links cause of the censors. Do you think you should have curse words that are between and and part of a web address not censored?

Nice examples Bolt, I think those and censored.gif sexual should be allowed, the rest I think have valid reasons to be censored.

It becomes hard to distinguish between Homo Sapiens, Homo Erectus, Homo Habilus (sp?) and other forms of hominids. Not to mention, Homo is a prefix in many words meaning "alike". Imagine if it said censored.gif genized on milk instead of Homogenized.

The swear filters had good intent, but they have gone a little far.

Oh i just realized that you can say Class or Assistance but not censored.gif .

If you arn't going to remove the word H O M O then why don't you make do the same thing as you did for the "A" word.

Where it only censors it if it is used alone.

Over a swearing filter?

Anyways, how about this: If the user age is under 13, censor as many swear words as you want. If not, censor only the big ones, and if over 17, no censor.

Age alone won't cut it, though. But you COULD have age set a minimum maturity factor, and if they fail to meet up to that (like with the above mentioned idiocy meter) then they lose their priviledges faster and for a longer duration than a younger member would (except for repeat offenses). However, as long as they're being mature, and claim to be an older member, they can get their extra priveledges.

Something like that.

No i've been considering doing it anyways. I intend on finishing my HOTH revision and then retireing fully. There are some other things that bother me too, like no forum games are allowed. I see yoshi's point on these decisions he has been making but it seems like he is making them out of anger. I wonder whats wrong with haveing a section called "forum games" as a sub forum under the garbage section.
Unless he is concerned about the effect it has on the filesize of the site (witch shouldn't be his call really) i don't know what would be wrong with it.

Report, edit, etc...Posted by Wilhelm on 2005-07-16 at 20:07:18
There's one big problem with this: It can turn a nonagressive swear into an appearingly violent threat. This unbrella has removed various words containing, but not actually swears, such as scra p and h ello, and removed words that are not technically swears, and do have their places in language. I can get along without f ag, but q ueer's literal meaning is "odd", it comes up in more intelligent posts. Why should we be able to swear? Well, there's more to these "obscene words" then violent statements, personal attacks, and p ornographic material. Certainly there have been, and most likely will be discussions of H ell as a place, conversations using f ag simply to describe any h omosexual persons in a quick, one worded manner.
Edited: Censoring Ho mo is ridiculous. There are Greek and latins versions, bother different versions, ho mo as in man, Ho mo sapien, ho mo as in same, ho mosexual. Po rnography is censored? Agh. This censorship will simply follow the route of prohibition... minus the gangsters and the profit.

Damn it... made a big long post and hit backspace when I wasn't in the textarea and lost everything. I hate the backspace key. It shouldn't be a "go back" button in a browser. I'll summerize... paragraphs won't flow with ideas anymore, just be direct statements.

Shadow: You sound like someone who would hate 3 6 Mafia, not all (non-underground) rap is like that. I generally don't like the stuff on MTV either, but I haven't watch it that much. Why don't you pm me a list of your "underground" rap songs, artist + song title. I'm always looking for new music to listen to.

Sir_Fela_the_Wise: You wouldn't expect someone who likes rap to also listen to Kill Hannah, I do though. My music selection includes almost everything, so if anyone was to say "your selection is censored.gif ed", I think it would be me. As far as "normal rock", what is that? Nine inch nails? Chevelle? That's what normal rock to me means.

On topic: Damn and hell are no longer censored. Homosapians and such won't be censored, ho.mo will though. I dunno what else I did. I posted a post in staff suggestion that minor "swear" words use a different censored smilie though.

Honestly I would if I knew what the artists names were and the song titles. I know you may think that I'm using this to avoid having to send you the stuff, but my friend who had this stuff, moved to Arizona sometime in March. He just had a bunch of CDs and I brought my splitter so we could listen to 'em without having to use speakers, just headphones.

I honestly don't know any of the songs, but they sound really cool.
