The Soviets, not Russians, forced the Eastern Europeans to join the USSR (United Soviet Socialist Republic) when the "Iron Curtain" fell on Europe. I don't know where your country is located, but it sounds like it was on the eastern side of this invisible curtain, under Soviet rule.
