I can't imagine what relevance a person's member group has to use of language. For example, Merrell and I are about the same age. I am a member, he was a DLDB keeper, and thus had more overall site access than regulars do. Your system makes no sense when put in any sort of realistic context.

That may be true, and yes, your typing skills are exceptional. But remember, most people only stay to become regulars if they like it here, and most those who type poorly and are never respected usually don't stick around long enough to become members. It's not a perfect system, but it stops the regulars from arguing about it, and we both know the moderators can't police all the 5k members and check who curses and who doesn't.

I agree that when the censored.gif smilie was the replacement, it was much easier to... well.. it was nicer.

I think this sollution could work.

Don't liek them, evade them.

We like them, when you evade them you get warned by mods after members that like the forum to be civilized report you.

You keep doing it.

We suspend/ban you.

Works out for everyone.

I have to agree with our ranter here - word filters are stupid. You (administrators) don't have to search through all the posts (though since I read like 90% of posts, I could tongue.gif) because that's what the 'Report' feature is for. The game is rated teen and profanity is widespread to an incredible level on battle.net. The filter has no purpose, if someone makes a post with nothing but *^*&^*&(%^%&($(#(% in it, we'll ignore them.

I remember badword filter in one chat. It didn't replaced the words, instead of that it just made them blank.

Like if you say "Tony Danza is an asshole", it looks like this "Tony Danza is an"

Quite flawless if you ask me. People just won't use badwords if they know that they will be deleted anyway tongue.gif

I don't see the problem with the filter.
It saves the trouble of being warned/banned.

It replaces it with some pretty cool words like...

fark

biznatch

rooster

wang

frontal fun hole

The blank idea is GREAT!
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Diggidoyo on 2005-12-27 at 20:06:00
I've seen other filters that just change all the bad words to -censored- or some variation of it. But as DTBK said there's no need to use those words in the first place.

I think we can all agree that the frontal fun hole censor must remain.

^ ^ ^ ^ Spam.
Anyhow, the point of the filters isn't to protect us, it's to look more professional. It makes whoever feels the need to use these words that are filtered look like an idiot. The filter isn't going anywhere, no point to argue about it. Hehe frontal fun hole.

The whole point is to make people like you sound like an idiot.
Precisely.
How about, Tony Danza is an idiot.  And then explain why.
We do not read every post made on these boards.  That would be insane.  You go read evey one of the 364,529 (and counting; averaging 2.3 posts per minute) posts and report to me every one with vulgar language.  I'll make you a global mod too! Go!

I do not need my inbox flooded with "OMG I HATE HIM AND HE CALLED ME AN IDIOT.  PLZ BAN!!!"

If anything, the filters should make you look more stupid.

They are not going away.

Wait a second. Let me get this straight, DT. "The filters should make you look more stupid"

Isn't SEN about equality of members? Is it not about making members feel welcome?

By censoring words and making you "look more stupid", does that not degrade the members? Isn't that technically flaming the member who has been deemed "stupid" through the use of the filters, because they can get a little heated and they like to use vulgarity when they are heated?

QUOTE(NerdyTerdy @ Dec 27 2005, 01:07 AM)
I'm sick of Kellimoose...  Also Kellimoose that wasn't directed at you so no need to respond.

How in the hell was that not directed at me you dolt? You included my name, and said you're sick of me; Hence, it's directed at me.

Good. I hope you're sick of me.

Just ignore me, I could care less.

QUOTE(Silver-Dragon @ Dec 27 2005, 08:45 AM)
Thats the point. Make the swearer look dumb. Would be better if it also made the word uneditable too, of course.

Make the swearer look dumb? More like degrade them with the filter; Thus, making them look "Stupid" to people because they like to use vulgarity sometimes.

Is that really how SEN should be? I'm seeing hypocricy..

SEN about equality? HAHA. uberwoot.gif
I don't think that a censor is going to make someone "feel unwelcome". I also think that seeing someone actually saying the curse words everywhere is going to make them less respected than seeing the result of the filters.

Well then if you want to sound smart I advise you to not use vulgar language. SEN isn't going to change for you, you should try changing yourself.

I have no desire to give welcomeness or any concessions to someone who "likes to use vulgarity when they are heated". SEN is about quality of members, yes. We don't consider a person who "likes ot use vulgarity when heated" a quality member. We prefer people who can keep a cool head while debating.

New members would feel much more welcome here were they not facing people swearing at them like sailors.

Also Kellimoose, it was ABOUT you not TO you. There's difference. If you write a letter about someone and send it to your friend does that mean your friend should send it to whoever it was about? I basically did the same thing, except more publicly.
