It makes no sense. This reminds me of the time when France had a despute over the name "French Fries." Which America promptly renamed them to "Freedom Fries."

It's the same thing people... what's the point of calling pluto a "Dwarf Planet." It's still a planet... -_-. There will always be 9 planets. Grawr.

The definition of what is considered  a "planet" was changed because hundreds of other entities that circled our solar system would also have to be considered planets. It probably is meaningless now (especially with the war going on) but at least we save our future kids from having to remember 200+ planet names in Astronomy class.

Why are we still talking about this? There not gonna change it back.

lol?

It angers me that people protested. Science is about what truth, nature, and the laws of physics dictate, not a popular vote.

Imagine the USA satillite reachs Pluto and theres actually life on that, how freaked up do you think they'll be?! tongue.gif

Well they aren't really discovering anything, it's simply a name.

well then prepare for the alien invasion because they must be really pissed by beeing given that title: "dwarf planet".

There is a tiny town called Pluto, Texas. It made the front page where I lived because it god demoted. It would stink to think the name of the city that you lived in got declassified as a planet. That would be like your high school becoming a middle school while you are in it. In the story, old people said they lived there their entire life and they were shocked it would change after so long a time. I don't care that it is not a planet, it just means less to keep memorized.

lol all those science textbooks are all wrong. SO sad... and think of how hard it will be to think of an acronym for all the planets with the last word starting with a "N"

Tell that to the Sci-Fi geeks. wink.gif Science is in the name, is it not?

Yes Science is in the name.

I wonder why after all of these years, they want to demote pluto from a planet. Pluto has been a planet for a while. Is their a certain size that a massive rock has to be before it is called a planet? They never used to have one, I think it is only because of the discovery of some other massive rocks that orbit the sun that would also have to be called planets if pluto were to stay because of their size. Why re-write history if you dont have to is what I say! Also pluto's orbit also makes it difficult because it is so different than the other lanets, it isnt circular, it even crosses paths with Neptune's orbit. I think we should keeppluto as a planet and heck, add a couple more if we have too!

7-7 they did it because they found a whole lot of rocks similar to pluto. They didn't want to add a ton of more planets in the future, so they set a new criteria for planets.

Yes I know, thats why I said to just add the other planets, It is kind of sad that scientists didnt think of this problem before. Space is huge, do you think their is only 8 planets circling our earth, too bad they thought of making regulations now that planets have to pass, they already messed up.

Well I always liked Pluto it may have been small but it was like one of those cute planets that was near the edge of the solar system that we know of and still orbited. I don't see why removed them as planets and name them as 'dwarf planets'. It's almost like discrimination against two planets. Though it would be annoying to learn 3 other planets.

I know this is a late response, but I just finished watching this special on TV about Pluto and how basically people just accepted that Pluto was a plet without doing more studies on it or questioning it because it was the norm. Now, scientists have done year-long studies searching the farthest points of our solar system and they've found tons of objects larger than Pluto in the same areas. Apparently if Pluto were to come as close to the Sun as we are, it would basically melt and become a meteor. It was fascinating stuff.

Yea, I've heard something like that too. As interesting as this topic was, its over. Thanks to everyone who posted in it.
