Kenoli still shouldn't of been disqualified for colors. Who cares! It doesn't matter, you just shouldnt add points for it. He put hard work in the map (probably) and now you disqualify him?

That's it, kenoli is out of this content.

Don't be so strict? I asked for alt code and got nothing. So there are non or he doesn't know it. That means that he has used 3rd party editor/program for overlaps. And probably to make the whole map. Violation of the main and only rule. Hes out.

ADDITION:

That is not even close to any our message. Our message is to actually make map on staredit, not to pretend doing so.

My personal opinion is that if StarEdit doesn't care, I wouldn't care. I remember the old days when I made maps with only StarEdit, in which almost all the maps I opened up gave an error that said "This scenario contains xx units that are invalid or not properly placed... ... The invalid units have been deleted." This message annoyed me very much, since I couldn't learn from maps that are missing core components. By contrast, I really liked maps that gave no errors, since opening them did not make shivers run down my spine wondering if I'm skipping out on some huge part of the map simply because someone thought it was cool to put buildings on water.

Now, I realize that the purpose of this contest would be different than my wish back then. However, I hope that the difference would not be too dramatic. I'd like to think that Syphon created this contest in order to bring back the good old maps that don't have square terrains, preplaced sprites, or extended units that have a "BLANK" wireframe. If that really has been the case, then I think you've all been fretting way too much over the use of third party programs. SCXE, in my mind, is only a patched version of StarEdit, offering versatility instead of complete customization like Starforge or Scmdraft. Colored text and format tags definitely improve legibility, and stacked text --combination of format tags-- is simply the icing on the cake (which I personally shun because of the redundant complexness). Extended units like vespene tanks can really broaden the limit of "items" in RPGs, Arenas, and more. The resourcefulness of extended AI scripts doesn't even need to be elaborated upon; most of us all know how much they can enhance a map.

In closing, I'd like to end my, uh... essay with a few suggestions. To the mappers: just follow the rules to the best of your judgement, you'll have a lot of fun; I know I am. To the judges: chill out, or you'll look really improfessional and even more people are going to resign from the contest. And to everyone: let this contest bring reminiscience, not resentment.

Also, because merrell has now become the staredit judge there should be NO ONE ELSE THAT DETERMINES IT. Your only creating arguments. Its like the supreme court. The supreme court determines if a law is unconstitutional and therefore, Merrell will determine if your map is "Staredit only-able".

this contest should have been "Use any editor you want, however only use features that are possible with normal staredit". IE allow color codes, they have been possible since shortly after SC came out, I remember the text file with the codes floating around like 5 years ago. Heck use SCXE or scmdraft or whatever if you like its layout more, just dont use the advanced effects.

of course my opinion doesn't count 8[

Here is a list of alt-codes: 7, 18, 19, 179, 191, 192, 196, 217, 218, all look like the color/overlap tags, but I haven't been able to successfully input them into staredit yet via the alt-code method - they don't seem to be part of staredit's font. Most alt-codes in staredit give one of { ?, +, - }, and are pretty useless.

NB: to input alt-codes, hold alt and type the number into the numpad.[codebox]1☺

In any case, I think it pretty silly to get so worked up about such an insignificant thing as colours - I understand that the contest was meant to offer the challenge of using only staredit, but people were copying and pasting these codes from very early on. What's more, the judges can simply choose to ignore the colours when playing/examining the maps - if a map requires colours in order to make sense (which is rare but possible), then mark the map down, but don't go round disqualifying everyone.

It's weird. After reinstalling WinXP (or back when I had Win98), I always see vertical lines for the tags. After using XP for a while, the vertical lines change into the actual symbols. Maybe I installed new fonts when I installed Openoffice.org, I really have no idea.

I know for a fact alt functions may or may not work depending on the font. They don't CHANGE, but the ones that work do. I don't know if staredit font goes off your computers font or its own font. If it goes by its own font then you can never use alts to get color codes into staredit. If it goes off your computers font then you can find the correct font that allows the right alt functions.

Q: Can we use coloured text?
A: Coloured text is just text. You can copy and paste the "codes" from anything into your map. The colour codes are not added by a program, and are simple copy/paste figures, so they are allowed to be used in the contest. The colour codes can also be inserted by using your keyboard with currently unknown ALT-code combinations.
You shouldn't change the rules and kick people out at your every whim, especially over such a trivial detail. (and especially so long after the contest started) The colors only improve the look of the map.

If anything, it makes the map longer to make, and tests your patience, adding whichever colors that you need, of if there is a color pattern you wish to follow.
