Yay 200th post!

LegacyWeapon is Stalin! OSMAP is Communism! Unprotection is Unamerican!

Now where's my damn vodka?

I should make a tee shirt with that slogan. biggrin.gif

EDIT- Frankly, this discussion is dead. As soon as it hits politics or religion, it's already goners. Just publish your maps better, cope with partial protection, or wait it out for a new protector (if any).

Now buy my tee shirts. wink.gif

How much per shirt? I'm getting bored having nothing to wear that insults people tongue.gif.

Time for a lock. I'm a firm believer in one side of the conflict, but because of the stupidity stubbornness of everyone else, I say there's no point of continuing. Not like we have a choice in matters, anyway.

None of this discussion is on topic anyway. Desperado seems hell-bent to convince us that his view is the only view and bringing politics into the discussion (however seriously or not).

Right on Urmom! Even though im not going to spam. wink.gif So I done see how this can now be related to aftermath. Right now OSMAP is still in the wrong hands its not like The war on Unprotection is over yet/ so this is like Pre-math.

Is it just me, or is Desperado's arguement completely incoherent? I fail to see the connection between communism and OSMAP. A better comparison would be between OSMAP and Linux, and Linux was a success.

However, I do believe that OSMAP will do a lot more harm than good.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Cole on 2006-09-08 at 22:13:01
I'd like to note.

Stealing a map does not require unprotection.

If OSMAP was released to be a program to steal maps, it wouldn't have to touch on unprotection. All it would need is a string viewer\modifier. I've written a program to extract all strings from a map in perfect order. It worked on every map I tried that worked with Starcraft.

Also Communism and Legacys idea is very different. In Communism everyone puts in work to the society and recieves equal. With Legacys idea...someone can add a cool idea to your map and make it better.

Linux. With a Linux distribution, I could download the source and add something really cool in. Someone could add something onto that. Then another person onto this. Development and cool ideas happen really quick because there are so many people contributing and trying to make the idea better.

With map making we are currently in the idea that maps should only be made by one person. But what if that idea turned into... you make a simple map. Someone adds something onto that. Another person adds something onto that. People keep adding there own cool and innovative ideas. The ones that suck get tossed out. If people disagree then you have two maps. These two maps will probably recieve different ideas and evolve into two totally different maps. So now what started from one simle map ended up into two different maps with seperate and new innovative ideas. The more people that contribute the bigger possibility for different ideas.

Now i'm not saying this ideaology is right, i'm not saying it's wrong. Your thoughts on it are an opinion and we all think differently. Now I like the concept. It's a nice idea. I'm not saying I agree with the creation of OSMAP and how Legacy approached this. I am simply saying I like the concept.

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
You been out ridin' fences for so long now
Oh, you're a hard one
I know that you got your reasons
These things that are pleasin' you
Can hurt you somehow

Don't you draw the queen of diamonds boy
She'll beat you if she's able
You know the queen of hearts is always your best bet

Now it seems to me, some fine things
Have been laid upon your table
But you only want the ones that you can't get

Desperado, oh, you ain't gettin' no younger
Your pain and your hunger, they're drivin' you home
And freedom, oh freedom well, that's just some people talkin'
Your prison's walking through this world all alone

Don't your feet get cold in the winter time?
The sky won't snow and the sun won't shine
It's hard to tell the night time from the day
You're losin' all your highs and lows
Ain't it funny how the feeling goes away?

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
Come down from your fences, open the gate
It may be rainin', but there's a rainbow above you
You better let somebody love you
before it's too late...

Pathetic.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Tuxedo Templar on 2006-09-09 at 02:14:21
Well if he didn't, he should have been banned instead.

Either way, it was faithless to have made that move on his own without checking with us. Clokr, Heimdal, SI, etc. all had sense enough to respect protection. What gave him the right to make that decision?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Tazzy on 2006-09-09 at 02:21:40
You people still rabbiting on about this stuff pinch.gif

Map protection is good as it stops map stealers and other versions a week later coming out, so what? There will always be idiots in this world always have been always will be. Get over it? Lifes a female dog then you die, what more do you want?

I don't protect my maps (when i do complete them) i dont care if someone wants to steal my work and say it as there own. Infact that would make me feel good to think someone likes my map and wants to call it there own or just to open the map and learn from it (If theres anything in there they want they can have)
Sounds, Music, Triggers, Anything its open for them..

So LW made this OSmap thingy? Why get your nikkers all in a knot? It was bound to happen sooner or later IF NOT by LW by someone else maybe not even from SEN then where would you be?

Im only saying my view but thats what i think...

I asked mike what he felt about this aswell not knowing his already posted but, his reply to me was..

Clokr almost released a unprotector at and was planning it at one point. Proedit also had a glitch which unprotected any map. SI constantly boasted about how he could make scmdraft open any map and actually released a version of that to me, it never went mainstream. Heimdal is the creator of the first unprotector in the form of a program and actually distributed it to a few people, which was later obtained by Archn and spread on the internet and stolen.

ok some people support osmap...but what map maker supports map stealing..? looking at the quote...who really wants to encourage map stealers by saying they'll do it anyway...I don't like the idea of osmap because im to lazy to work and distibute my version of maps so i can be proud of my map and have my bragging rights biggrin.gif but they still are bragging rights...this is internet so all you mappers who want to become famous and have your maps played everyday get over yourself...if you dont want to spend enough time to spread your map until it is practically the only version anyone plays...your lazy like I am..Starcraft Fame can buy envy but nothing else...if some1 on the internet thinks your great and cool (Ex. me and woodenfire) well then your cool on the intertnet...what is that worth?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by in_a_biskit on 2006-09-09 at 02:56:32
I think that in most cases, the large number of maps/versions of maps we all have in our download folders is not simply a matter of people stealing maps outright. Most of the time, we get a new map in circulation because some person has thought of a way to make a map more enjoyable for them (or because some newbie has thought of a way to make a map more "enjoyable" for them bleh.gif), and so edits the map. The problem isn't so much stealing as a lack of map editing etiquette. (I have a big rant to make on this topic, but figured that noone would read it. If anyone would like to hear my opinion in full, PM me).

Tux: I think there are two more categories of arguments that you could make, which are even more broad than your listing (Now that I think about it, I think some of the arguments you've listed as "Unprotection is good" are more like "Who cares?" arguments):

Protection/Unprotection isn't an issue
 • Map stealing is pretty rare, especially for maps from SEN.
 • Given that enough people know that you made a certain map (eg if you link to SEN, showcase on SEN, etc), then "map stealing" does nothing to you.
 • Who cares what the average battle.net gamer does to your map?
 • Protected maps are "protected" by string removal anyway, there isn't any difference to an average gamer whether they can see the map or not (assuming that the average gamer isn't a determined map stealer).
 • Someone would have made the program anyway.
 • "It's just a game"
Protection/Unprotection is an issue
 • There are map stealers all over battle.net, their access to maps is affected greatly by the use of protection and unprotection. We want to stop map stealers.
 • "Map makers all have their rights, and those rights should be respected."
 • The ability to learn mapmaking skills, design, and tricks is greatly affected by the availability and use of protection and unprotection. We want people to learn.
And a separate issue is here too, concerning whether (i) LW had any "right" (though I'm not exactly sure what that means) to create and release his program, and (ii) Should LW have been demoted, and then for what reason (lying, contradicting SEN policy, etc)? Are his actions regarding OSMAP actually related to his role as Global Moderator?
