LegacyWeapon's recent news post has opened many questions which I cannot avoid about his fate as well as the fate of map protection in general. I realize that with an issue this divided, there are no resolution where everyone will agree; there are no methods to minimize casualties.
The actions of LegacyWeapon to release OSMAP were very irresponsible and oppressive, striking at the mapper's freedom of choice. His almost godlike exertion of authority over the average mapper, in my opinion, is oppressive conduct, and that conduct is unbecoming of a Global Moderator. Thus, LegacyWeapon loses his position.
Does anything else happen to him? No. This leads me to part two, on the issue of map protection. Most of you know me as a long time promoter of map protection. I boiled this down to a question which I answered and thus changed my mind: Would I, had no protection ever been available, still have created the maps that I did? The answer is a resounding freak yeah.
Will SEN policy change to allow hosting of OSMAP? I don't know at this point, buy my views on the issue have shifted. However, this does not exonorate LegacyWeapon. I would have much preferred a read-only program a la Trigger Viewer, but it's too late for that. In my opinion, an unprotection program was the easy and less responsible way of doing things. As for policy, we'll just have to see what develops as time goes on.
Well moose, im 50% happy with what youve done here. But ill have to live with it. I still stress that keeping OSMAP away from SEN is the best thing to do IMO.

LW's done some good stuff, but yeah his decision should definitely have a concequence. As for anyone who thinks they can play god. Shouldn't matter if the issue is supposedly minor or not.
Just for reference, I've gotten by thus far as a regular just fine. No one needs a fancy high position to show their worth.
For anyone who's read Alfred Bester's "The Stars My Destination"... LegacyWeapon is the Gully Foyle of SEN.
I suppose since he made protection programs, it was PARTLY (i stress partly) his right to create an unprotection program, although he shouldnt have released it on such a scale as that..
No offense to the guy, but my respect for him is now even lower than what it was before. And it wasnt too good to start with..
I work hard on my maps and I believe I deserve to have my name on my work...
If he wanted to keep his position he could have just not told anyone he made it. SEN doesn't support protection. Infact, legacy, why on earth did you even tell everyone? It just makes people dislike you.
I don't know about you guys, but I've played since SC started, and it sucked without protection. "Close P1 slot" ring a bell to anyone? It was basically every game because every game was rigged to no hell. Who gives a crap about "recognition", it's a matter of playing games with unfair advantages, completely unlike how the author originally intended.
That's not to mention the whole playing God thing, making it just because he thinks unprotection is a good thing making ALL maps open source..
Oh man, I heard about this from Golden-Fist but I didn't really think it was true.. Ouch..
Doesn't this leave us kinda short of GM's? I mean Captain Will is a good guy but because of his own reasons cant be THAT active? And I don't think DT could handle it on his own with just Moose and sometimes IP as support o.O...
G-G-G-Get get over it...
(In the famous words of OK Go)
Well I like protecting my maps, and I don't like people editing MY map, but I do love people who take my ideas and put them into their own map.
I am not hurt to hear that LW made the unprotector, i'm actually glad there is a tool out there, even though I will never use it.
I am split 50/50 on this situation and i could go either way. LW knew what he was doing wasn't liked by many people and i'm glad that he let people know he made it.
You know, on some level it's kinda a shame that the only way we have to "punish" him on the matter is with him voluntarily announcing his role in making an unprotector. That makes it almost like we're punishing someone for a confession. The only way I can think of to make it "fair" would be to say something like "If he didn't come forward, and was discovered, he would instead face being banned instead."
But in any case, it's not like we can stop anyone from doing these kinds of things. I think it was just a matter of time before an unprotector came along, really.
Still, jumping the gun and making decisions you have no right to isn't the way to handle things.
To LegacyWeapon:(MindArchon as well I guess since you helped O.o)
There could have been a better way. Like you could have taken your "Trigger Viewer" idea and put it into a "Map Viewer" this meaning you can check the whole map like your looking at it from DRAFT or somewhere but yet the people CANT edit the map in any way. Honestly thats a pretty good idea cuz this way map theif's cant STEAL the map but mappers that need help cant VIEW it and use the ideas from it. See where locations are, what switchs are used, the area of the units terrain and everything.
Take this as a future idea?
Cloud, it's too late for that - nobody would choose the lesser program. Why stick to knives when there's guns about?

The thing is he did mention it before, privately, but I didn't really believe him at the time. Gabbly isn't a very reliable way to extract facts from people, if you know what what I mean..
Maybe they could make a new protection program to make OSMAP useless as well, it could work..?
And why use a gun when its out of ammo when you can use a sharp pointy knife that doesnt rely on ammo?

Yeah what he said. The main reason why people normally open maps is so they can make it fair for themselves. If I could upload my download folder onto SEN. You woudn't believe it. I got over
20 versions of hero arena. It might sound strange but its true. All the people whoever played that map always want some unit or some area to be rigged for them. Just like madness games like family guy madness, animal madness, golems and crud there is always a rigged version because the person wants to make it so he wins all the time or makes all the other people upset and gloat. But the idea of a map viewer would be good because people wouldnt rigg stuff as much but theres only one question?
How do we make over 200 users to notice these things!!Yeah it is a good idea but some will refuse it and just carry on rigging stuff. Like what moose said. There will always be thieves and riggers just waiting for another good map to be victimized.
All right 10 more posts till im a regular!

Why bother. Even if you could it wouldn't do anything for the maps that've been compromised already.
I think at least part of LW's goal was accomplished nonetheless: To make people have to use recognition for protection instead. No loss to me, personally (I've no shortage of repute
), but to other mappers that might be a different story.

Man, then use OSMAP to unprotect your own map and then use the new program to re-protect it.
Come on guys stop trying to be so narrow minded(seriously no offence to anyone) and try to think positive?
The thing about this I hate the most is that before the hacker attack we had a topic about new protection. Many people were working to beat OSMAP but LW just kept updating it and lieing to us all this time.
You can't protect so OSMAP can't unprotect it without ruining the map unless you edit SC as well. OSMAP reads the map exactly like Starcraft does, not like Staredit does. So if you stop OSMAP from reading it, Stacraft can't read it either. Brilliant strategy, actually.
Not exactly like that Silver. There are few maps running on SC but it crashed OSMAP. It's not universal though.
Farty discovered a way to protect against it, I believe.

Yeah, but what about all the other thousands of maps floating around already vulnerable?
Anyway, it's still skub. I think we're done with this issue for now, unless someone comes up with a new way to protect maps that sticks.
Has LW been suspended for this?
