I want to know the reasons for always putting the gas off to the side of the minerals. I always loved the way it looks when gas is placed in the center of the line (Hall of Valhalla). I've heard one friend saying is was too hard trying to get just the gas guys off, but i don't have a problem with it and thats not a big concern anyways.
Does anyone have any problems with gas in the center?
No. I made 1 or 2 maps with that concept. You just need to make sure minerals and the edge won't make a poor SCV stuck behind there. THAT'S imbalance.
I like when the gas is in the middle
I dont know why its usual on the sides, but I guess its because people place the minerals first and then the gas.
Only complaints and problems I had is that when the start location is at the left or right of the map in Valhalla, the gas kinda pushes back the CC (makes it further away). So the creator of the map had to compensate by moving the minerals closer to the CC. And then he has to do that for all of them or it won't be balanced. Just make sure you do that when you're balancing your maps.
Gas in the middle of the mineral line can sometimes hinder the amount of minerals you get per second, just a little.
Because if you put a vespene geyster in the middle of the line, it would push all the minerals more outwards, away from your depository station (cc, hatchery, nexus, etc). To reach the outer portions of the mineral fields, your workers would need to travel just slighly farther which takes up just a little more extra time. In the long run, you would accumulate a little less resources than normal.
That wouldn't really change the game though since everyone would be getting the minerals at the same rate.
Hinders YOUR game play a little, not the ratio of yours compared to ur opponents

In answer to the original question i think another reason for the gas to the side is this. I know i catch myself thinkign thsi at least, and i bet other do, but i always think of gas as being extra and of minerals of being the main recource to worry about. It comes along with the reasoning of y do you only have one geyser for gas while you have like 8 mineral patches? it's becase people usually favor minerlas as the main recource opposed to gas.

It also looks better and more realistic when geysers are placed to the side.
Lets say you are visiting one of these "melee map worlds" and saw mineral patches. Wouldn't it look odd to see one huge geyser pit petruding out of the middle of the mineral line patch? "Valuable" resources on any planet usually would be cluttered together and not seperated by something of a totally different category...

I see that you have never been forced to rush someone using 25 archons. (one archon costs 100 minerals and a whopping
200 gas!)

that will never happen on a real map, with real players.
yeah very unlikely.....how can that be cnsidered a rush
lol omg true a ood rush would b more likely b with lings or cheap untis, wasting like 5 mins building htese archs and wasting all ru rezszxource jsut makes uw eak
I have done that before... my oppenet was expecting zealots - and so he build 20 scouts.... After that he never built scouts when I had a few archons around because of just how badly I raped him.

What? A High Templar costs 50/150.
How did you manage to multiply 150 by 2 to get 200? I must have a glimpse of this incredible math for use in later SC games.

no, you can put the minerals a space forward, then it would be completely even.
