Spring Terrain Contest

Spring is coming, and it's time for the 1st annual Terrain Contest. I bet your wondering what exactly is this "Terrain Contest", well it's a contest to find the best terrain maker on staredit.net!

Entry Fee:
There is no entry fee.

Judging:
Your terrain will be judged by it's:

Creativity
(Is it original and unique?)

Details
(By looks how much effort did they put into it? Does it look blocky, or clean?)

Game Play
(When played, what can you do with your terrain? Can you walk on it? What can you do on it?)

All these skills will be judged on a scale of 1-10. Then your score will be adveraged to form your score in the terrain contest. Depending on high how are the scores, will be the rate in which who get's to the semi-finals. From there they will be required to make another terrain map, this time an assigned choice of terrain such as.. A moutain, a forest, a bridge, etc... From there the semi-finalists will be re-scored and adveraged, and the two with the highest score from there will be assigned yet another project to create making them the two finalists. Who-ever wins from there, wins the Contest.

Why is the title "Winter Terrain Contest?"

It does seem kinda weird to have just a terrain contest...
I think it's just to look at... mellow.gif

It has to be a map so we know it isn't a ripped image.

The only reason it said Winter contest was because i wasn't thinking and it was editing awhile ago, if you havn't noticed,

It's a pity that I'm already hard at work on 2 maps. Perhaps I could submit one of them?

A question about gameplay: Can it include units? So could we actually make a real map, and have only the terrain be judged on it?

Yes, it can be a complete map, and we will just judge on terrain. So fill free for it to be terrain from a map.

Virus, does it have to be like the special terrain from StarForge where you can make the cool waterfalls, or can it just be regular isometric terrain...? Or just any?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by BeeR_KeG on 2005-02-06 at 12:35:33
There is no minimun or maximun size limit.

We would be looking forward to Extended Terrain mixed in with the normal isometric terrain.

If want an example, go into the Terrain forum and into the Terrain Hall of Fame(pinned topic), and there will be some examples in there.

what was it?

How about another judging on sprite/unit count? There are limits. Less sprites and/or units used in the terrain piece mean smoother gameplay and more room for units and weapon shots. Terrain can have less sprites and actually look better you know. wink.gif

here's a list of questions that i want to be clear on an answer for:
1-Is there a limit of File Size?
2-Is there a limit on Dimension Size?
3-Do we have to use specific tilesets?
4-Can we use units as part of the terrain?
5-Will the terrain be viewed in an Editor or in a game?
6-Can we use a unit or sprite that MAY crash sometimes yet other times not?
7-Is this too many questions?
8-Are we going for a nice Minimap look (like in a picture) or are we going for actual terrain (the look in the main window) [sorry if that doesnt make sense to you]

That's pretty much all i have for now.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Deathknight on 2005-02-07 at 15:52:47
1 - No.
2 - No.
3 - No.
4 - Yes.
5 - Game.
6 - No. If it crashes once, at any time, even if it's a 10% chance of crashing, don't use it.
7 - Yes. You should read the thread itself before asking questions.
8 - Actual terrain. Generally, when you make a good terrain piece, the minimap will show it, and it usually looks good anyway. Never judge your terrain with the minimap. If you have to, cover the minimap, or completely ignore it. The minimap doesn't make your terrain piece look better or worse.
