How do the professional terrain makers blending the terrain so perfectly and it actually looks real?

how did bros. blend teh staircase with the high dirt? i always end up getting an ugly and blocky effect...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by UBCS on 2005-02-08 at 22:05:29
Well, most professionals use alot of Sprites to blend there placed tiles to form that realalistic effect. Really without the sprites it would look really blocky. Pro's take the time to make sure they put the right # of sprites in their maps. Basicly without sprites the map would look censored.gif ty. So remember this sprites are the key to terrain.

Actually, I think terrain looks censored.gif ty if you use more than one or two sprites for cover up.

Well everyone has different opinions. But you must admit most people do use lots of sprites to cover up their blockyness.

I made a brush for you.
Just use bushs/trees in the same area as where he did and it should be identical.

Np. I think if we get people to post the brushs they use more often, then it'll help everyone become better overall.

Actually, you CAN make any terrain non-blocky, it's just a matter of taking time to find the right tiles...which most people just go with the sprites thinking it makes it look professional.
Half the screen shots in the hall of fame will only work on a 64x64 sized map or less.

Well most people do not take the time, and sometimes you can't blame them...On my terrain i try my best not to use many sprites but to find the right tiles that fit, as you can see.

On Starforge I noticed you can make custom terrain tiles but when I make a new one (i.E. Test) I can't seem to find any way to change it from the white box it starts off as. Does it save somewhere and I need to load it in a different program to edit it confused.gif .

P.S. Sorry if this is a newb question but I haven't experimented with terrain that much so just trying to update myself cool1.gif .

Click and drag the tiles from the pallette onto the empty box to fill it. Here is the link to a video tutorial of Yoshi making a 3D building. Video Tutorial

I don't think people know all the caveats of the custom brush editor...

You can place a tile on it from either the master palette or the default palette (the one you get random tiles from). If you use the default palette, the tile will have a small "R" in the corner. This means that the actual tile placed will be a random tile from that group. You can also right-click tiles in the custom brush editor to make them transparent (marked with a "T"). These tiles will not change the terrain of whatever you place them on.

Wow, Yoshi's Tutorial Video was cool, its nice to see him blazing away so quickly finding the right palettes making his custom ones biggrin.gif . I got a ways to go before I come anywhere near that kind of terrain editing masterage blink.gif .

Thanks for those tips Heimdal, I for one was educated by them and I think your right about most people not knowing, I never even noticed the R's and T's before tongue.gif .

Ha Ha I knew that. Heres another niffty little tip

You can increase and decrease the size of your curser using the + and - keys on your keyboard. This works in both SCM Draft and Starforge.

More importantly it was my idea to have them add that lol.
