Real nice message to get pinch.gif . Luckily I've never had any serious virus on the computer smile.gif

I've never experienced a virus, trojan or other piece of malicious software on this computer...ever.

I don't even have anti-virus software on this one, I'm so confident of its invincibility.

My high school used to have a major virus on it - even though it had the most up to date virus definitions and it was using macaffe. So what I did, was I installed norton anti-virus on every computer and I removed all of the viruses. Since then they haven't had any major problems that this virus caused.

As for spyware... I have gotten it quite a bit when I install bundled software such as imesh. I found a program called ad-aware that let me remove ALL of the spyware. It is also effective with safetly removing any spyware, malware, <insert the name here>ware, too!
Pekkel_the_duck has used this program, and after he removed the spyware his computer was quite a bit faster. (At least, that's what he told me after I recommended the program to him.)

If the virus is a personally created virus, those major companies won't have it detectable.

what about spybot...

i dotn use anti viruses that you can download fro mthe internet....they can be viruses themselves....

can a virus delete your personal settings but leave everything else alright?(happened to me today, its a (curse word) to replace everything...)

sigh...

A virus can do anything as long as the programming is correct.
A worm, I think, is the kind of virus that destoys massive amounts of files/info. They can be specifically designed to destroy a certain thing. They also multiply to try to spread themselves.

And a warm can do more than that, LegacyWeapon. Anyways Norton antivirus can detect and virus that isn't known because of its bloodhound technology.

This doesn't seem the right place to post a thread with this subject but wth.

I had a dialer virus that got through some weird Net surfing trip of mine. Since then I use FireFox (check my siggy) as my default browser. IE has so many security holes in it still today that I decided to change.

On the other day I received a spy/addware virus through my E-mail. That's how I consider those things... a darn PC virus (you don't want it, but it get inside your system). Luckily my apps (Secret Maker) detected that my mail app was tryin' to send multiple mails at once. I started my Anti-Virus (McAfee) and as soon he started detecting virus files inside my OS (Windows 2K) main directory, got faster than it and deleted all the files of that date inside it (WinNT folder).

From that point onwards, I don't consider anything full-proof safe if someone is ingenious enough to try it. wink.gif

Here's the tips to improve Net security I followed. Hope it helps. happy.gif
On top of all those I still use Secret Maker n' PeerGuardian. If you wanna know what they do by my words, head here.

From the date of that posting with my comments, I've stopped using Spy Sweeper 'cause SpyBot is better and doesn't use so many system resources.

For Secret Maker, I don't have the latest version... noticed when linking this one. tongue.gif I also suggest you fellas to have it's Banner Blocker feature off, along with the Office and Windows Cleaner ones. It sometimes gets too intrusive for my taste.

As for PeerGuardian, it acts similar to a firewall and checks the sites you connect into from a reference list. I use one of the special merged ones bellow, in the site linked.

"Practice makes perfect" they say... and it so applies to software. Hence, I feel somewhat safe now. blink.gif biggrin.gif

Side note (edit add): All progs mentioned by me are freeware for personal PC's (aka home ones). Not to business usage ones. wink.gif

actually, they already have done this. Most of these files would be classified as a macro virus. You know the virus I told you about a few posts back? The virus that was on my school's computer's was a macro virus - it attached itself to microsoft word. sad.gif So, once every 4 weeks, a comuter would, shall I say, croak. wacko.gif rip.gif

For viruses, I have Norton Internet Security 2005 3-user Edition. Unfortunately, all of the new Norton products contain is idiotic bug in the activation system. Every night, my computer disables it's security and wants to verify that I haven't stolen it again (I didn't steal it, for those of you wondering). The technical support was bad, they could not even solve the problem! Anyway, that's another topic. . .

Quite clearly, I get viruses on this computer all of the time (none major though, I have never had a file deletion). Usually, I have to solve the problem by hand. Most viruses are stupid enough to install their startup key into HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices, so I look in their for any obvious signs of virus infection. If antivirus software says that access is denied to the process (a nasty new feature just recently introduced), just re-boot in safe mode and delete them manually (or run the scan again).

Anyway, enough about that. Spyware is a large problem these days. Since nobody has mentioned it yet, I strongly advise anyone and everyone to try out Microsoft Antispyware BETA (published by GIANT software, recently purchased by Microsoft). I cannot express in words how well this software works. How about this. . . Several Months, many games, many websites, 0 spyware. It is quite simple in design, it runs real-time, so spyware is stopped in several checkpoints immediately. The most interesting thing is that when spyware is detected, it is removed, analyzed, and sent to "SpyNet". All of the other computers using Antispyware immediately download the information about the new spyware when it is verified. Please, try it out. It is free until sometime in July, I believe.

Hacking, virus writing, spamming . . . it is all just stupid if you ask me. Why? Why would anyone want to sit down on their computer and create something that spreads across the world to make information about the computer and finances available to you? Is it because you want to steal money? If so, good luck trying to steal from 3 billion companies and get away un-noticed. You can't go undetected, venerable dummy computers exist just for identifying new viruses. Why bother? Some hackers that I talk to say that it is "for the thrill". Err . . . Ok. So destroying somebody's computer and stealing things that do not belong to you is a "thrill"? Some people have a warped state of mind, easily remedied by 5 years in prison.

Though spyware is the major threat on the market today, viruses still linger. In fact, after Microsoft released access to raw sockets through Windows, everything has changed. Most people have heard of the Denial Of Service attack (DoS attack), or perhaps even the Distributed Denial Of Service attack (DDoS attack). But not that raw sockets are publicly available, one person (or a small group of people) has discovered a way to reflect SYN packets across servers (DrDos, Distributed Reflected Denial Of Service attack) to personal computers, denying all access to the internet while remaining untracable. Even worse, there is a publicly available document on the internet teaching programmers how to use the DrDoS attack! Internet users, prepare for a problem.

Well, that is my (very long) opinion on viruses, spyware, adware, hacking, etc.
P.S. Programmers reading this, if you try to learn the DrDoS method I am not held responsible smile.gif

Try uninstalling it and then reinstalling it. I know that whenever my subsiption to automaticly download virus updates expires, all I have to do to fix this is uninstall it and then reinstall it. (Mwahahah! I know how to get around this "free for ONE year subscription" service!)

I have 3 anti virus programs on my comp. SpySweeper, spybot search and destryo, and spyhunter!!! They work really good!! I expecially like spy Hunter because when it finds the viruses it gives you definitions for most of them!!

Also i have McAffe firewall wich is goo because it can tell you what ip addresses were trying to connect to your comp. Then you can block their ip address!!

. . . and it still comes every 15 days. I am not the only one, thousands of other people are having the same problem. Symantec doesn't even know how to fix it. Customers are flying away and if they don't do something fast, they may be in big trouble.

QUOTE

I just do not have that kind of time . . .

So, Norton doesn't work at all for the people who pay for it, but the hackers who get the software illegally also have patches for this so they do not have the problem. Effectively, hackers get to use the product while true buyers cannot . . . is that a way to make software?!

Symantec's stupid solutions and actions to this problem make no progress. With one of the major firewalls rendered useless, viruses are on the rise . . . and it is all Symantec's fault.

Altough it's a good app that detects traces of bundled spy/addware such as iMesh, Kazaa and the likes, it does have a limited trial period (such as you said). And the SpyBot/Ad-Aware SE combo does the same anyways (for free n' with no time trial 'bomb'). wink.gif

Have it installed but not running 'cause to me most of spy/addware are IE's n' Outlook's crappy securities fault. Don't want to get attached to an app of his that only plugs holes that they initially allowed. bleh.gif

Well, OS's can't get much worse than XP. The next one for 2006? has to be better. If not Microsoft is going to Hell. P.S. Don't buy Microsoft Office Suite. Download Open Office. It's free and has essentially everything in Office, without the $300 price tag (or however much it is). The worst part about it is its large download size, so get ready for a multi-day download dialers. I use don't use KaZaA, but KaZaA-Lite (K++) is pretty nice, without the evil spyware and such. They used to have a K++ website, but that got deleted quickly, so I downloaded KaZaA, downloaded K++ off of KaZaA, immediately uninstalled KaZaA, and then installed K++. The only virus I've ever gotten is a stupid little Win32Pirate or something like that, which only uses a minute amount of system resources, and since I've gotten Firefox, even that has not been a problem. Oh, have I added that since I got Firefox I've gotten no spyware whatsoever?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by iamacow on 2005-02-16 at 13:42:32
I don't have a problem with any of it. I download tons of stuff all the time and have yet to get a virus. I've only had trouble with spyware once since I've had this computer. I don't have an anit-virus or firewall, but I use Mozilla, which helps against the spyware part, at least.

I imagine much of the motivation behind coding viruses is to see if they can get past all of the anti-virus software or through firewalls. I think it's for people to challenge themselves.
