Staredit Network -> Website Feedback, Bugs & Discussion -> ZIPs instead of SCM/SCX

Alright, I bring this question up because I'm going to do a little of reworking to our downloads database.

The question for you all, is should we allow individuals to submit zip files instead of just maps? (campaigns and programs will still have zips allowed).

Heres a little list of advantages/disadvantages:

Advantages:
  • More of a direct download. No unzipping useless files.
  • Wonderful for SC Vanilla individuals, because then we could give them the option to block out all SCX files from the downloads database so they only get maps compatible for them.
  • No more readmes (just put it into the file description, thats what its there for)
  • Annoying. Zips don't compress maps, because they're already compressed because its an mpq file.

Disadvantages
  • You would not be able to put a different version of your map inside (like a no sound version). The no sound version would have to be a seperate submittion
  • Cannot include extras

However, if your map really needs multipule files within a zip, you may PM them to me and I will it myself.

In my opinion zip files should be most definitely allowed. I prefer zip files than downloading only one thing because of what Yoshi said, you can download different versions of a map or extras. Zip files: cool.gif thumbup.gif thumbup.gif thumbup.gif

As a DLDB Keeper I'd have to say no becasue of the following reasons.

(1) We are the people who check maps for integrity and such so we basicly ahve to download every single new map to approve it. The problem is that .Zip files may contain viruses and such once we extract them.

(2) It would take more time to approve them all.

(3) Ziping a map seems stupid especially when the only thing that was in there is a map you could've downlaoded directly.

(4) I ahev a folder named SEN Approval to which I download everything I have to approve and my SC Map Generator is set to send all files to that folder and the default folder it opens is SEN Approval. Zips create an extra folder to which I have to manually send the Mini-Map image to, Manually select where to open it and then when I submit the Mini-Map image I have to again, manually look for the picture instead of having it right there.

Well, for one thing it would be stupid to zip a map and nothing else, in that case zipping is kinda dumb. Lol, with what you said Beer, now I'm not sure wether I like zip files anymore tongue.gif

If they want to include extras and all, all they have to do is contact me or a downloads database keeper and attach the zip file. Sometimes I think its unnecessary to have zips.

Exactly.

OFF-Topic: Would it be posible to add several files to one Submission.

IE:

BeeR's Map

Files:
1)BeeR'sMapwithSound.scx
2)beeR'sMapwithoutSound.scx

Wait, I wasn't supposed to be uploading .ZIPs? tongue.gif

Advantage of zips: No retarded [1]s added into the filename.

Moose? Our downloads script dynamically removes those [numbers] upon download...

hmmm... I would vote, but there isn't a "I don't know" option. interested.gif
Here is why:

PRO! smile.gif
--->Can upload mulitple versions in one go.
--->Can add things, such as a .txt file, that gives hints to the person that opens the .txt file.
CON... sad.gif
--->It creates more work for the DLDB keepers.
--->The .zip may contain a virus or 3

For single files it's completely useless and I hate unzipping maps when it doesn't really do anything. But if there is stuff included like you guys were talking about above, I wouldn't mind at all.

I suggest if you don't want to allow multiple file uploads to allow ZIPs. Becuase melee maps/campaigns will usually need a zip file (reg/obs versions, multiple file campaigns).

Campagins and Prorgams are allowed to submit in .zip's.

Okay heres what I'll do:

I'll make another listing for types of maps you can upload, and you must check a radio button if its SC or BW compatible. If the user clicks "single map", it will not allow them to submit zip files.
