Hello all, After i have complete SET *Stop-Evil-Tazzy* 100% i am looking on to moving into a melee map making careerer for a while. See i have started to play melee more than anything else at the moment. So thought to myself hey why not try a few melee map's. I tried one did not come out very well. But everyone starts somewhere. I have just started one a 192x192 map. Which will be my first major melee map, Can i have any Hints/Tips by any melee map makers out there please?
Also i am here to ask a few questions if that is alright. Also these are to help me for future maps.
Thank you for your time if you decide to answer them.
Questions:
1. Whould you in interested in a Melee/UMS map? (What i mean by this is: Around the map there will be carefully hidden Tunnels which use triggers to move you around to hidden areas? It is still has the melee triggers, Just a few added triggers) or just a plain melee map?
2. What melee size maps do you play? 128x128, 192x192, 256x256, or other?
3. Should i base a melee map on only one race? (What i mean by this is: I make the map so it best played with protoss) or make it useable for all races?
4. What tile set do you prefer to play on? or does it not matter?
Thank you for your time.
Here's some guidelines that you should adhere to when making a melee map:
1)128x128 is standard for 1v1 and 2v2, anything larger than that and it's an FFA map, nothing more.
2)Jungle is most popular, but it's the most overused. Do something else. Badlands just happens to be particularly cool.
3)If you make it exploitable by one race, then it's not balanced. No professional player will play on a map that's not balanced.
4)Similarly to #3, if the resources are not the same (1500 minerals, 8 fields is standard) and all the exact same distance from the starting position for each starting position, and the gas is not always on the same side (the open or closed side, respectively), then it's not balanced because some slots would gather faster than others, or one might be able to use it's geyser as a barrier, or would have its geyser exposed while another would not, then it's not balanced.
5)Melee maps require expansions. Temple has a natural expansion which is equal to the main, and a mineral only, which is equal to the main minus gas. Typically, though, you want more expansions of smaller size, rather than big main-sized expansions. That way expansion is more important and players aren't getting big money with standard strategy.
1) Doupt you could name it a melee map, then. THIS melee map section is to be played under melee settings (except if it's obs). If you want to mix both, you can, but it'd fall under the UMS category
2) Any size you want. As long as the map is well balanced for most units. You might want to avoid 256x256, though xD
3) It's impossible to balance a map perfectly. It WILL have imbalances throughout it. The main point would be to try to keep them as small as possible. If you know a map is more race-oriented, just specify it in your map description.
4) Tileset doesn't matter. Personally, I only see them as decoration and accessories, doodads, etc...
Thank you for your time to write all that out. I will take that all on.
Here is a few screen shots i have taken from staredit. Hope you like

This is player's 2 starting area.

This is player's 2 exp area.
only have 2 at the moment. But its getting there.
Contact me if you see me on MSN. I'll be uber glad to test your melee maps and have fun with you
Will do, But i dont have enough Space on MSN. IF you have AIM i can Add you then. My aim is: Looney0WOLF
If you would like, I can show you then.
This will help you a lot.
http://www.staredit.net/index.php?showtopic=101911) Plain Melee maps are better than UMS Melee maps simply because they are way more balanced.
2) Any map is fine but it has to fit in with the amount of players. We don't want a 256x256 2 player map now don't we?
3) Make it suitable for all races, that way more people can play it.
4) Terrain type doesn't matter but doodads are essensial for microing strategy.
Errr Tazzy... It's me, Shadow/Paladin/SP/Christian -.=
Wake up.
Oh i knew that......
, Not im fault im a little slow here!
i happen to think that tileset does matter.... No one likes Ice very much just because protoss buildings warping in look terrible. I prefer Twilight/ Desert/ and badlands. And i disagree with this doodad nonsense being essential for micro strategy. Moving you units correctly to maximize their potential is micro, and i dont think you need trees for that. In fact most pro maps do not have any doodads that you can hide under in the main battle spots.

thats a fairly odd reason for not likeing it...
Oh well, My first Real melee map is gonig fine, Ill have a few more screen shots for you.
Tazzy goes to melee! I can't wait to try some of your maps at map night taz
Hey mike, Heheh It should be done by next map night, When you come online ill send you what i have done so far over MSN. So far people have told me very good...
On a side note people ahve asked: YEs i still make UMS but i thought id try melee.
1) normal melee, it is a waste of time to do UMS/melee
2)128x128, 64x96, 96x128(my favorite) and maybe 96x96, this is for 1v1 maps or 3 ppl ffa or maybe even 2v2
3) Never-ever-ever-ever. lol thats a bad idea, cause if someone doesnt know and chooses another race then it lessens gameplay. Unless you make it a UMS and make it so they can be one race.
4) i would like to see you make a space tileset, it has tons of terrain types and doodads plus not many good space maps out there, i would like to see a few more
