Staredit Network -> Terrain -> Yet another dam
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Heimdal on 2005-02-26 at 20:21:06
Yeah, I know it's been done, but I haven't seen any that were really all that great, so I thought I'd give it a shot since I really haven't done mapmaking of any sort in a long time.

Like a lot of other people in here, this is my first time, but unlike them (or what they say) I did spend a lot of time on it, so don't be too harsh in your criticisms please smile.gif.

I believe that sprites should only be used for aesthetic purposes, and for cover-up only when ABSOLUTELYnecessary. The barriers on top of the dam (actually the back of a storefront doodad) do cover up the transition from asphalt to high dirt. The fans in front are purely for looks. You could add some water pouring out and hallucination deaths at the bottom if you wanted to, but I don't think it really needs it. The high dirt around the dam does indeed look kinda bare, so it would be cool to fill it in with some random trees and stuff. I'd also like to point out the transitions from high dirt to water, again I know it's been done but I like to think I did a pretty good job of it, especially on the corners of the super-high cliffs.

So without further ado, here is the image and the map. Feel free to take the map and make brushes out of it, modify it, or whatever.

That dam looks prety good...
I did mine it jungle and it was impossiable to get all the terrain non blocky...
Some things you can do are to add in some more effects like its actualy "Blocking" The water...

It doesn't seem like its blocking much I think it looks more like a bridge personaly

Now this is a real dam. I knew someone would make one that is 99% flawless. Good Job Heimdal.

The only flaws that I see is those 2 blocky tiles in the right part of the dam where it meets the cliff. Besides that it looks great.

The cliffs are pretty good and it has a "High tide, Low tide" feel to it since the higher part of the cliff is lighter than the lower part.
Very few use of sprites whatsoever which is pretty good. I only see 4 sprites.

I'll be putting it in the Terrain Hall of Fame.

Very well done, and not to be mean but what is the point of a dam if there is water after it as well? If you could somehow incorporate the highdirt to water in the area above the dam and then have dirt below it so as the dam was stopping the water flow I think that would look better. Nice job regardless of that loophole though.

Also, the yellow stripes on top on asphalt tiles seem out of place, could you use pure black ones in any remake?

Hum, i know it's a small detail, but it will make it better :
try to use differents tile on top of your terrain, we see too much the "sameless" and it's not very "natural" biggrin.gif try to alternate tiles, that's all, elseway, look very natural, exept the bridge, look strange for me o_O but it's maybe me the starnge person lol !

Looks nice. It would be cool if you could make the water "higher" so it looks even more realisitic (If possible...)

It looks very good. The only problem I see with it is the blockyness where it meets the dirt and that it looks like a bridge. I like a lot because it uses few sprites. As mentioned earlier those yellow stripes in the asphalt look random and a bit out of place.

Damn... thats a sweet dam. Good stuff wink.gif

Hmm... I dont think there are yellow lines on dams though...

Those aren't lines, they're lamps from inside the dam!

Nice dam Heimdal. The only problem was the left most part of the dam where it merges with the dirt. The angle of it looks really weird. The right part of the dam mixes well with the dirt. Good job!

Damn Heimdal, didn't know you could make terrain like that.
Maybe you could give us the dam tour, be our dam tourguide, and show us where the dam bathrooms are?

All in all, very nice smile.gif.

Damn, that is a nice dam, lol.

Whoever was saying try to make it with dirt so it blocks the water... dams aren't made to block water usually its to regulate it and to generate power.

Good job not wussing out and covering it with sprites/exploders. The cliffs tile real nicely, which I noticed are taller than normal cliffs (been looking for a good way to do that). It is a little plain, though.

I saw Tux's post and reviewed Heimdal's work, and immediately thought: "Okay, who can blend high dirt to more high dirt and cause a multi-layered cliff. Gogogo do it. happy.gif

WOW, thats alsome, the high dirt blends in very well, good job.

FaZ, I believe the point is to add to the scenery.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by FaZ- on 2005-03-01 at 14:25:59
Yeah it looks very good, but without even the tunnel-ish things for water to go through how could it produce energy? I just think it would look better to see water come to a stop at a dam. That would be cool. Also, the blend of the high dirt to the water looks amazing, but if you could get that to go up another level, either through high temple or another layer of high dirt that would be awesome. Again, nice job.

I hope no one crucifies me for saying this, but I think it looks really ugly.

(condems Xenomaniac to cross tongue.gif ) Looks good. Are you going to add a spillway?
