I just realized that almost 95% of the files in the database are either unrated or unjustly rated. One person on a whim could give a crappy bound map or something a full score and it would encourage that map to be downloaded over other, better ones.
One way to encourage people to give ratings or comment on others' maps (which the authors would no doubt also appreciate) would be to give minerals for doing so. One way to prevent it from being abusable would be to require the map to be downloaded first, and set a minimum time limit before a rating occurs to ensure its been played, or something like that. Also maybe prevent the author from rating his or her own map.
It won't be foolproof, but at least it's something. Any other ideas?

Suggestions:
- Do not display ratings if under 3 votes.
- Make a seperate page... which the site "remembers" when you downloaded a certain file, and reminds you to rate it.
Maybe have the site pm you after like a day, have it tell you to rate it... only do this once becuase of that it would get quite annoying.
I like the return reminder idea, yoshi. PMs would be good too, especially for people who download a whole lot of files, but give nothing in return (which would probably be almost everyone
).
One idea would be to add a feature to link or access the map rating bar in the forum thread for the map if there is one (directly from the thread instead of having to go through the download page). Most of the feedback for a map goes through its thread, so if a map were to recieve a good or bad rating, that would be the place where people would say so.
Yeah I was just talking to Tux about this. We could also hire people specifically for the purpose of rating files. Like they get a page of the newest submitted files, and they can go through and play and rate every one. (like TA's replay system, you submit a replay then the moderators rate it)
Or the PM's idea. I dont think it would get annoying at all. Just a pm 3 days after dl'ing the map saying "Subject: 'Map Name Review' Body: Did you like this map? Did you hate this map? Go voice your opinion and rate it here <--link to map". They do this with Ebay/Amazon.com whenever you buy things from other people. But their wait is 2 or so weeks.
EDIT: Also, show the average ratings from all maps the user has done in their profile/avatar(title). Like if I rated 10 maps a 5 and 4 maps a 7 it would say something like "Average Ratings: 5.6". Then if people are just going around giving 1's or 10's or something people would know and we could do something about it. You could also tell how harshly or generously people rate maps.
Adding on to that and yoshi's suggestion of minimum ratings, I think instead the rating bar should have a function to indicate whether a given map or file is heavily rated or not. Such as having high transparency or blurriness if its only 1 or 2 ratings, and a strong color or sharp outline if its 20 or more.
Also, to help get legit votes, make those from established users count as like 2 or 3 seperate votes in the average instead of just one. That would exclude the author's own vote, of course (though maybe they can set some kind of initial self opinion vote, or something).
Hmm...
Rating: 5.4
Total:xxx13
Rates: 1__2__3__4__5__6__7__8__9__10
xxxxxxx0__0__2__3__1__2__4__1__0__0
Rating: 6.0

Rates: 1__2__3__4__5__6__7__8__9__10

In the map page show something like this. The rating, how many times it's been rated, then how many ratings of each value. Green/Yellow/Red color co-ordination for less/more/morerer votes. Yes, I just made up the word morerer.
It is some interesting suggestions... I'll see what I can do for you.
I was saying that the PM would get annoying if it did it more then say 2 or three times for the same file. I.e. if you didnt rate it it sent you a pm everyday, that would just be annoying.
You already said that rhiom, No need to repeat your self, People read it...Just don't feel like replying to it.
Well DT, obviously you didn't think through the purpose of making this thread. If 90% of the maps in the DB got reviewed in the first place, this wouldn't be something I'd bring up.
So why are we talking about new methods of rating rather than encouraging more people to review maps?
It's not like veryone wants their map reviewed.
The idea of map reviews arn't for the map maker's benefit (though it helps those who want them for sure) as it for the downloaders trying to decide which are good or not. When I go to download maps that are total shit but mysteriously get good ratings, it kinda pisses me off and discredits the system as a whole.
it may sound stupid... but who gives the ratings and if I can, how?
You find your map in the Download Data Base, And then you click or map, And in that page, Find the link "Rate", Or something like that.
Hmm, maybe simply an advertising campaign for people to go and rate other's maps because it's "the right thing to do" or something like that would be enough.
I make an attempt to rate maps I download that I feel strongly about either way but even I'll admit I don't get to them all. But hey, someone started a topic about this maybe sometime this weekend I can go back and rate the ones I played and liked/disliked appropriately and add a few comments in
. I think maybe its because some people are in a rush and just don't think to download it after they play or they go play again and forget about rating...
Which is why I'm saying a system to encourage or remind people to rate stuff would be helpful.
