Staredit Network -> Terrain -> A Serious Terrain Discussion
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Tdnfthe1 on 2005-03-07 at 12:26:27
Look, i see alot of good terrain in this forum. Lots of cool ideas to use and have in maps. But i don't see anyone using this edited terrain in any maps. No1 says they're using it for any maps or anything. People just see something cool here, mess around and see what they can make. Then they post it. One thing I really need to know is.... is anyone even using any of these ideas for making their maps?

And if not what reasons are People not using all these great terrain ideas and layouts? I know some of the pro Mappers are, but that's a small handful.

As for me, i'm sticking with Isometric Terrain until i get good with triggers in starforge, What reasons do other People have?

P.S.(Should this be put in Garbage/Serious Discussion?)

I sort of agree. These concepts are used in some maps posted on SEN, but I have yet to see one map with terrain like that posted in the forum on Battle.net, I don't know if someone else has. People on B.net seem to be playing shorter UMS games, someone should make a short minigame type thing with this terrain. Just an idea.

Most people don't use this terrain in maps because the ammount of time requried to make a full map of this custom terrain would be overwelming. And with the mass unit placing it would be very difficult to most comman-terrain experiementers. I personally don't use alot of this 1x1 to isom terrain in my maps, because it does not fit most of my maps. Alot of people feel the same way.

Maps with great terrain are planned all the time, but of course almost never released. It adds hours of more work on top of the pre-existing hours it takes to get complicated triggers right and balancing units as good as possible. DevliN and I would definitely like to make an RPG using the best achievements in triggers, terrain, and gameplay found in StarCraft maps to date, but who knows how long that would take.

*sigh*, that's why we need a tool for people to mix brush samples seemlessly with normal ISO terraining. It would take some effort to make, but it could be done, and it would be extremely useful.

I refuse to do it though, since everyone shot down my offer before. I am however making a comprehensive brush set for the badlands terrain that includes blendings for almost all possible terrain type combinations, which I may or may not post if there's some demand for it. I made a thread earlier with some samples of it (which I've since polished up), because someone asked for it.

When your done you should definately post it! That would make life easier for me, and probably a bunch of other terrainers. smile.gif

Ok I will. I guess because people arn't too creative unless prodded in the right direction at start (I see people completely overlook ideas at first that soon took off like a rocket later), so I'll have to make some sample maps to show it off. No sprites, of course.

Wow.. Tux was good in terrain?
Anyways, I think Jungle and Ice are basically the only used tiles in rpgs. I'd like more of a twilight or desert.
Custom brushes or ok... except that it's almost impossible to get every combination. but you don't need that..

Thanks for all the replies to my post guys. Glad to see it wasn't me just tripping off of things. I think it would be possible for a Team to put together an rpg with great terrain tho. Maybe Team SEN could do something like that, since their triggerers know Starforge Triggering and They have the Best Terrainers on SEN, they should have lil problemo.

To Answer your Question Sckor, people are making Rpgs on alot of Twilights(I have Been Nosey). Excluding my own there are 4 Map Makers(Pretty Well Known) Making 3 Rpgs on Twilight Terrain, and i Myself am making 1 as well(I'm not all that good, average).

But Yes I think Terrain on Rpgs should really be changed up a bit. Like People who know how to Best choose tilesets and doodads based on the Idea of a Rpg, or adventure map. That is what makes a Great Terrainer.

Challenge: I Challenge Anyone to Make a Very Innovative Rpg, on Desert Terrain, This is a Dare as to see how you could Incorporate some Terrain for an Rpg.

Funny you should ask, because I made a short RPG a looong time ago, it contained extended terrain, but was so utterly horrible that I never released it.
If you want a good RPG, it won't be done for a while, especially with extended terrain in it... I don't think your challenge will go very far. If an RPG was made on any tileset with extended terrain, I would definatly give the person props.

Desert in real life is just like the desert used in map making, it's something deserted tongue.gif.

Tux was good at terrain???

The reason I'm not doing it yet is because I'm too lazy to click on the SCMDraftv.2 in the downloads database. blushing.gif
