Staredit Network -> Terrain -> Rock quarry
Report, edit, etc...Posted by TRiGGaMaSTa on 2005-03-08 at 20:28:21
Okay, i was just playing with terrain, and I was admirering my work and thinking, "WOW, someone should make a melee map like this", because if I have ever seen or played a melee map with terrain like this. I would pass out, and never stop playing it.

Elevation can make a map seem to have endless possibilities.
Using it correctly will make the map seem soo many different heights and areas, when really it's still all the same.

Heres a screenie.

Enjoy biggrin.gif

ADDITION:
Doesnt it just look great? even without sprites or doodads, you can imagine playing this map. I should finish it and make a melee map with minerals and everything.

cool, but try using the sides of dirt ramps to make the walls coem closer to the ground...

The wall paices would block veiws in certain areas, but I would play a map that had that in it.

That's great, nice creativity and great blending.

Hall of fame material? I mean nice blending with no sprites yahoo.gif no sprites!

That would be to me smile.gif.
Anyways, that'd make a killer melee map. One I might actually play...
But what about the expansions? crazy.gif

Hmm... Trench warfare, anyone?

Yeah that's a good idea. Reminds me a bit of the cliffs from AoE (entirely different game), though you can't actually get the raised terrain effect using that (cliffs only).

I might add a few samples of that to my brush compilation, if you don't mind.

Hey triggamasta, your terrain is ALMOST completely blended!!! You never see perfectly blended terrain nowadays. Look carefully at the bottom left of your screenie, and you'll see a square dirt terrain cutting off the cliff cry.gif

So close to 0% blockiness!

You're getting better and better at terrain!
Is this jungle or badlands? Did you use the jungle bridge or something else?

do i smell a snipers map?

Wow these are alot of great feed back thnx, trench warefare, snipers, great melee. Perhaps it's worth finishing.
Tux i don't mind you using those for brushes, just give me credit, and i have a question how to make those white brushes that are nothingness.

Yes i've seen that blockyness, it is fixable easily, but itd mean making another screenie, im just too lazy, you can also see 3 blocky squares top right.

Edit: Disregard the below. I'm wrong. blushing.gif Only sort of though because I noticed that you blended dirt as the tops so it seems lower. Sorry anyway.

Well, before I rain on everyone's parade I must say that the idea does look very well, and could be used as an effect. However, it will not give the one that you intend.

Because you are using high dirt to make the top of the wall, that place becomes high, and all terrain near to it will be visible, regardless of whether or not that terrain looks as if it is on another, and higher, level. There are only 3 terrain levels in StarCraft, and you are utilizing only the second and third layers. If you included a low ground you could make it a bit more detailed and foggy, but it would still not produce the desired results. The fog of war would make a way too easy snipers map for players to camp in certain spots. As melee, the terrain would not be useful because of the limitedness of the "high ground" availible. As a trench warfare game it could work, but then again that could just as easily be done with normal terrain and nothing square.

Edit: YES YOU PROVED ME WRONG TRIGGA. I WAS WRONG. I EDITED THIS AFTER YOU POSTED YOUR SCREENSHOTS. ranting.gif ranting.gif ranting.gif ranting.gif

What are you talking about? you are always so negative... Anyway, just to prove you wrong i took some screen shots. Just to let you know the highdirt edges are the things that act as fog blockers. So yes this would be possible, and no you cannot create this with any ol' Isom in Staredit.
It hardcore elevated terrain! AND IT ROCKS!! w00t.

Lol, fAz- you went and edited that after I posted this. don't think you can escape the fact that i proved you wrong.

Yeah.... I thought that that was obvious as to what I had done. I didn't want people to read my post and then be misguided because of what they had read incorrectly. Sort of! If you had used high dirt I am right, but I did not know that you were using dirt. Funny, they are different colors too.

i feal sooo dum!!

You think you'd be up for making a map made of a whole system of tunnels and trenches? That'd be pretty cool. Even for a melee map. smile.gif

Actually T-Virus I started doing this three and a half years ago, sorry, I beat you to it.

Talk is cheap, and you have supposedly done everything before someone else from what you say. Considering I have seen a whopping ONE screenshot of your work (which was extremely blocky and I'm not sure why is in the H.O.F.) I would suggest that you not make such comments unless you can back up your work.

Doesn't really matter who did it first, either of you, all that matters is who is recognized, in the right place at the right time, sort-of-speak.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by TRiGGaMaSTa on 2005-03-10 at 19:44:24
Um actually, I've never seen this done (Like this, i've seen low dirt to low dirt.) , and unless i can see screen shots proven that its done before me like this ill believe you.

Also, it's not a stupid ol' blend high dirt to low dirt. its elevation using only low dirt. S oit creates illusions thats some dirt is higher than others. so, don't say you've done this or im the first to post it so i get the credit. As scientists do it, whom ever rights in print about the discover gets the claim and the right to name it. So this is my idea. tongue.gif.

I've seen something like this in this uh messed up snipers type map on installation terrain. But it was really blocky, it jus thad like a strip of highland with one side cut off and connected to the low ground.

Haha I think you might be talking about my map called SpEeD DuElS. The filename is [SpEeD DuElS]vFinal.scx ... see if you have it. And no it didnt have anything like this, I really doubt this could be done well on installation.
