Staredit Network -> Serious Discussion -> Should junk food and soft drinks be banned
Report, edit, etc...Posted by StarmanJr. on 2005-03-09 at 23:08:37
Apparently, obesity has become a major problem in America. If you've seen "Super Size Me," you'll know what I mean. Many people have taken this to the next step: banning junk food and soft drinks in high schools. I think even Gov. Arnold is proposing to ban the stuff in high schools and replace them with healthier snacks.

Personally, I don't think junk food and soft drinks should be banned. It really won't help the students make correct choices because they can simply just eat and drink the stuff when they get out of school. Not to mention that high school is supposed to be a place where students have to be more responsible and being prepared to go to college.

ya that is bull shit. why would they ban junk food? its not are fault that they are tasty and good its the companys fault. and also its the childs choice to die in an early age or sufficate in their own fat. plus maybe its a health issue to be skinny or make a couple of pounts just to get out of under wieght. more likly us kids should sell snacks and drinks to other kids and make a little profit. then we should know whos boss around our schools.

It shouldnt be banned, but we really gotta rationalize our fatty food consumption. TOo many of us are getting fat and fat aint very good. We need more healthy foods to at least compensate for the amount of Junk ones we have

I don't think it should be banned. So if ain't going to be banned then make a physical activity class a requirement then. Im not talking about the hard classes that make you run (could be an opinion though) and stuff Im talking about the physical activity types classes where you play games like basket ball or other stuff that make you do a little running and such. There are many people at my school thata re over weight and complain about their weight, so I say "OK so why are you in weigh training? If your so conncerned about it" (work out type class, not a health class). and he says "Well becuase I don't want to" mmmmmmmmm and I run into this type of person a lot in my high school. Im in two physical activity classes and the only people I see in the classes are healthy students. weird

Am i the only one going to say yes?
Guess i might be its 6 to 1...

I think it should be, Sure they will eat more fat food when they are at home or outside school. But school is there to learn. So it can teach you to learn to eat less fat and eat more healty things... And after a while you never know.. People might get out of the habbit of eating fat food and eat right.

At my middle school they stopped selling it cry.gif. I didn't buy it, but some people abused it (they bought 5 bags of chips when their parents want them to be spending it on pizza.) Now on monday, wensday, and friday we have pizza and on tuseday and thursday we have salads and such. It is way too expencive, but half of the people still buy it. It is something like 2$ for a small salad. They also have carrots with ranch and jello I think.
I don't think it should be banned, but for me it doesn't matter. Also, on mondays people sell cookies, but they are for "educatianal value." Now and then we have bake sales, which are good priced, but that is only for holidays i.e. easter, St. Patriks day, and Xmas.

Maybe so, but I also wonder why these schools are targeting of getting rid of these junk foods when they sell crap themselves... The high school I went to practically sold the typical fast food stuff: hamburgers, chinese food, pizzas, tacos, burritos, salads (A salad is only healthy as long as the stuff in it is healthy, otherwise, it can be hamburgers in disguise) The 'healthier' stuff was usually hidden behind the counters and you'd have to directly ask for it. And for the breakfast menu, everything was pizza related.

The reason why people are getting fat isn't from the foods, it's from the lack of exercise. Cows consume McDonalds or other various fatty foods and then they don't do anything, and then they get fat. Don't blame the food. Any idiot can realize this. I did...

no it shouldn't be banned for junk food and sodas because it are right to do whatever we like to eat and it's are decision if we want to be healthy or not. and besides it's not are fault whenever we eat junk food.

It is your fault if you eat junk food or not .. It's not like people shove it down your pie hole!! wink.gif

I see that it is more or less unanimous that we would definitely not like to see a veto on junk. I wholeheartedly agree.

I believe that it is the children's money and they need to be able to exercise control over that money. What's the use of simply removing the "problem" if they will simply head over to the next 7-11 and buy their crap there?

I think that fast-food corporations should perhaps be obliged to put warnings on their products, like cigarette/tobacco manufacturers have to.

At the moment, they can advertise their yummy Big Macs with their crispy, water-dripping lettuce and abnormally well-made structure all they want, and that just isn't on. People are stupid and need to be told that this stuff is bad for them. Not just once, but every time they open a burger box or see an advert for a hot-dog or whatever.

Of course, a decent diet isn't the only thing that kids need to have. You've got to have intense aerobic exercise too. Physical education involving long-distance running at least once a week should become compulsory. If you just don't eat - expect to lose weight, feel unwell and stay unfit.

If kids are made to combine exercise with a fairly balanced diet (but give them some choice at least), then they'll get fit unless they have genetic reasons for obesity.

Personally, I'd take the running.
In fact, it would probably be better to have a mandatory 1.5-kilometer/mile(I don't know which would be more practical, just that they're both fun) jog/run, since some people prefer jogging to sports.
And anyways, in some people's cases(such as mine), there wouldn't be much excersize anyways, since people always leave me out. Not that I mind, even if I did like sports, I suck at them.

Oh god, I saw this news article on www.netscape.com and it was saying how obesity is become "acceptable" and how people are all comfortable with being obese because everyone else is. Wow if obesity becomes the norm, the world will be very weird.

Why should that be? People need food to live. Why should they be warned that fast food can make them fat? Any food can make them fat. They should just put a nutrition information chart up on the wall where everyone can see it.

Salads are only bad with dressing, meat, and cheese. In Japan, they use like sesame thing and it's tasty, but not that fattening. Or use vinegar and oil.

Me, I'm Korean so I don't have to worry. Fast food is like a once or twice a month thing, so I don't worry. I eat healthy. But recently I gave up Fast food for Lent...

There is a thing about America, half the people are obese and half the people half one of the many mental disorders that cause you to eat barely any food.
I for one eat normally and I weigh 126 pounds.

Snack food isn't needed to live.

Maybe it will just make you fat.

Why yes, yes it is your fault if you become fat. You can just eat normal food and be just as happy.
I mean come ON! There is enough junk food restriction! Having more will just make American kids pissed off and ignore them all. I personally think it's not very great to treat obese people with more respect and be so prohibitive of calling them fat. Honestly, I mean most people are Christian, and isn't gluttony bad in Christianity? (I have little idea about most religions because I have never believed in one.) So then they are disobeying thier own religion.
Making them feel more respected will just make them more comfy with being fat and keep eating away.
---------------------Rant Over----------------------
Even after that, there are many reasons that there SHOULD be more restrictions.

The difference?

I agree with some of the people here, the schools stop selling soda, and instead sell processed lard cakes. How is that improvement?

Should it be banned?
Yes, obviously.

Will it happen?
Unlikely. At least within a 50-years ratio.

Yes, and how many people will read a nutrition information chart?

I'd say 1 in 5. These people wont take any notice unless the information is thrust in their face every time they go to eat something with a fat/garbage content above a certain percentage.

In the UK, all cigarette companies have to put massive warnings on their packets saying stuff like: 'Smoking these will kill you.'

It hasn't worked, so perhaps my plan is flawed.

You're "wrong". Most important countries already all have the warnings on the cigaretts now. tongue.gif

Problem is that most things that are really good for the human body usually taste bad.
