Well you know in court when you put your hand over the bible and then you get asked the question "Do you swear to tell the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help you GOD?"

Well my first question is do you think that it is right to ask someone that question?

My second thought is.. Well, let's say hypothetically it was an athiest person that commited a crime. He would be able to lie seeing as how he doesn't believe in a God.
He wouldn't go to hell for lying or whatnot...

Tell me what you guys think then i will post later! smile.gif

did you think it was right...

They already don't say that anymore...

That is true.

I think the 'God' bit is optional now, and they just have to promise to tell the truth.

CaptianWill:
One man's truth is another man's lie. So who is to say what is the truth and what is a lie? And what basis is your truth, and what is your basis for a lie?

The truth as agreed upon by a majority: An accurate account of the events that happened, as visible from your viewpoint.

i dont think it's that big of a deal, i think it goes back to the fact that america was somewhat founded on christian principles.

also it's kinda like the whole "in god we trust" on the dollar bill, it's not saying which god or how many gods so the only poeple it could really effend are aethists, and they should stop being so stigmatic sense dont they only believe in the forces of science, and scientficly thinking it has very very minimul effects on people on the the whole.

There's a diffrence between practicing your religion and throwing it in peoples faces. People who don't believe in God usually don't for one of two reasons. They don't want to be controlled (they believe religion is just a form of social control, and that as a society we're past it and it's only hurting us now). Or they're strongly against partiotism, something that can be used by a leader to do most anything he or she wants.

The belief that God is on your side has been around for a very long time. In WW1 and WW2 do you think either side thought they were fighting against God? Hell no, it was manifest destiny all the way (the belief that it is God's will you should win, conqure land etc etc. American Dictionarys may tell you diffrent now, but that's the way I've been taught). Even today we still see manifest destiny, and it's pathetic. At least the Greeks had away of explaining this. Gods are evil and they take multiple sides just to toy with the lives of humans, with few exceptions.

To the topics question, if it wern't out of date I would say it doesn't make a diffrence, someone who wants to lie is going to lie, with or without the God. More cocky people may even believe that it is God's will he or she should lie, because they are destined for something greater, blah blah blah.

If you're curious as to my opinions on religion it's quite simple. Believe what you want as long as it doesn't affect anyone else in a negetive way (being of their opinion not yours). For example, something negetive would be mentioning someone will be going to hell or join my religion or burn in hell etc etc. Believe it or not I get that a lot, and I'm damn near tired of it.

Saying the truth: Saying something that you're absolutely sure that it's correct by all means.
Guessing: Saying something that you think is correct but not sure it is.
Saying something random: Making a statement without knowing it it's either true or false.
Lying: Saying something that you're absolutely sure that it's false.

If Bob is gullible, been told that John, and told someone else John is dead - he was saying the truth, no metter if John is dead or alive.
If Bob was that John is alive, and told someone else John is dead - he was lying, no metter if John is still alive or was killed by the time Bob didn't see him.
